Let's see. He signed a 2 year 3.5 mil contract... Alot of cheese to be 4th on the depth chart.

As a vested vet, his contract becomes guaranteed first day of the season, so maybe the released him to save some coin.

If there are no criminal issues, suspensions pending (and it's possible since I read on PFT alot of appeals were being heard by the NFL this week), etc then I say sign him to the vet min....

he was signed before they knew what they had at safety, and I think i have read a couple of times that they actually really like what they have back there.

I just think there is a chance he was released because he was not going to have a role on anything other than special teams and this gives him a chance to go find another place to play.

who knows maybe it is a legal thing. I would welcome him back though if everything is good with him. He just has to know he is the special teams ace.

I'd rather not have someone who only job is ST and can't be a decent back up. Keith Davis didn't lead our teams in ST tackles last year.

I think his roster spot would be worth it considering what he brings to ST and what the ST have lacked so far

Keith Davis was injured in the Chicago game where we shut down Devin Hester.

He missed the following two games, where we gave up a kickoff return and a punt return for touchdowns, and gamely played the rest of the season with a torn pec before getting surgery.

I don't think a roster spot is warranted for some one to just play ST

My strong guess is there's is alot mroe to this story.

They dont need the cap room, so he wasnt cut for that as some seem to think.

Either he was just flat out awful, or he has got into some big trouble. If its one of those two, I dont see any need for him to be brought back, nor do I think they would bring him back.

And in all honesty, the stuff thats wrong with our coverage units is nothing that he is going to fix. They werent any good with him here last yr either.

The only reason he was cut was because Miami has too much invested in Jason Allen to cut him. Yeremiah Bell and Chris Crocker will be the miami's starting safety's come opening day. Jason Allen was a former first round pick so they just can't cut him without giving him every opportunity to succeed. I've wacted every Miami preseason game and the only play keith davis has made was a fumble recovery in the jacksonville game. I've barely noticied him on special teams. Saying that we need him badly.

thats my sentiments exactly;

when the cowboys didnt have keith davis, kickoff return and punt return against us, and ketih davis had the pec injury against the giants game too.

if guys like bobby carpenter, pat watkins, courtney brown, and justin rogers were on special teams last year, and this year, and you have seen have our special teams play,

what makes you think it will get better?

i do think its a combination of things;
1st wade phillips refusing to use good first line players on special teams
like jacquee taylor said
2nd, Folk trying to kick another way, which has caused problems
3rd, losing keith davis, jacquee reeves and nate jones on special teams
4th, techniques taught by special teams coach;, some players said at the
end of the year, that they were questioning read's techniques on
special teams.

you add all of those things up and there you have it, bad special teams play

I'd be stunned if he's not already on a plane back to Dallas.

As for the person who said you wouldn't sign a guy who's a special teams player only, what role do you think most of the bottom feeders on our roster will be serving? I'd much rather have Keith Davis leading our special teams and contributing nothing on defense than Dowayne Davis doing the same.

Maybe he threw a jersey in Parcells' face?

Anyhoo, something is probably amiss, but if he was released with no strings attached, bring him in. ST play is the biggest hole Dallas has at the moment, and while KD wouldn't completely fix it, his play would be a step in the right direction.

There's a third possibility that the talent they already had on the roster at his position turned out to be better than they realized when they signed KD and was cheaper and/or more versatile. KD might even have slid down the roster a slot or two and wanted out if he weren't going to play on defense. It's too early to tell.
