While this 'sentence' makes no sense whatsoever, I'll go ahead and assume that you're insinuating that Watkins was only a ST contributor....and you'd be wrong. Again.

No, thats not what I'm saying. I was stating that Watkins was good for us on ST last year more tackles that Keith Davis. He also was a solid contributor for us on D if you saw some of my other post in this thread you would know that I wouldn't say something like what you think I am.

You don't want players who only play STs unless you can't help it. It's been awhile since I've seen a P who played QB, a K who played tackle, or a DS who played OL but it occurs. Why not have players developing to be a starter to play ST than a player who you know cannot be a starter someday.

Davis will never be the kind of safety we want starting on our club. He's only been one because of injury.

Why bump someone like D Davis off the club for a journeyman SS? And wanting to cut Brown for K Davis???

For Parcells to release him you have to wonder what the unspecified reason is.

But yeah bring him back and cut Brown now.

Seriously?

So you're sticking to your guns that we need every player on this team to contribute on defense or offense? Good luck with that.

Personally, I'd like to have the best players on the field as often as possible. When you have 25 or so defensive players, you're not going to be able to do that and still get the scrubs some work on D.

Finally a post that makes sense.

Just say "no" to Keith Davis. He's a horrible safety-- just horrid.

Cultivate a younger guy in addition to Watkins to become an "ace" of the special teams.

I don't think a special-teams only guy is that bad of a thing. Bates was that way later in his career, Jim Schwantz was that way.

Davis was the heart and soul of our special teams unit. I don't think it'd hurt to bring him back. That stat of us allowing kick return TDs both games he missed last year still haunts me.

I agree it'd be better if Watkins or Dowayne Davis or Courtney Brown or Alan Ball were to develop into special teams demons for us. But from what I've seen in the preseason, I don't like the chances of that happening anytime soon. Sometimes the ideal isn't what really happens.

I'd rather sign Davis to help shore up our special teams -- a huge weakness at this point -- than "save" that roster spot for a Dowayne Davis and see us allow one long kickoff after another.

Keith Davis isn't the end all, be all. But he could certainly help a sore spot of this team.

I think people that show upside/people that we are grooming to be future starters should be on the team. If your only value is KR coverage then your easily replaceable. Same with people who only return kicks. If your not showing anything at your respective position then you become worthless. Unless your a freak returner like Devin Hester or Josh Cribbs. Some one like Keith Davis is a waste of a roster spot.

If we need special teams help, then he is absolutely not a wasted roster spot. I do however agree that he's a garbage safety, and that I'd rather not get rid of the youth and potential in guys like Brown and D. Davis, but if our special teams continue to play poorly, we'd be foolish not to be interested...at the very least.

Apparently, special teams means very little to you...I doubt NFL coaches agree.

the upside of those guys just aren't there. as soon as dallas uses a draft pick they'll be gone just like reeves and nate jones.

bring on killa!

Yea so why should we pick him up at the expense of a player with more upside

*sigh*

If our special teams sucks *** right now (it does), and you've got a player that can help more so than a young guy with upside, sometimes you have to sacrifice that player for the team. D. Davis could probably be stashed on the PS.

Either way, I don't really care for Keith, but it's just stupid to not cover your bases in situations like this.
