I'm sorry, you specifically said he would be...let me get the quote right here a "very small safety." That is simply not true. He almost has a perfect frame for a safety, and while I will admit he is thin looking, he has no trouble in the box. Not to mention that if staying at around 215 will enable him to run a 4.48, versus adding 15 lbs and looking like that pathetic LB we have back there now....then I will accept "dang he's skinny."

The problem I see is he's 3 inches shorter then Reed yet only 12 ponds heavier, 6 inches taller then Sanders yet only 12 pounds heavier, 4 inches taller then Polamalu yet only 5 pounds heavier...yes he has a skinny frame but has played well in the box but we don't need another "box" type safety. He is to small to play that kind of style in the NFL. With his build he needs to cover better and it's simply not his strong point.

Okay, but even if we arent CUTTING ROY WILLIAMS this yr...okay, we prob are not keeping him and hamlin. And I know this makes #31 jersey wearers to want to slit their wrists, but we prob will cut roy after this yr. So why not draft a top echelon safety and let him learn the system for a yr b4 throwing him in the fire when he will be asked to be the starter?

I understand that logic but I just don't love the idea of taking another Safety that high. For one, I think that if we cut Roy next year, then we probably sign Hamlin and lets not forget, Watkins. I honestly believe that Watkins could have a break out year if given playing time. He's a phenominal athlete. He just needs to learn the Pro game and get reps. He could be the guy at FS for us. I guess I just do not see what everybody else sees in him. I see a guy who has exceptional Size and Speed ratios but I don't see a guy who has really made a great deal of impact at Miami. I probably wouldn't draft him until around the 3rd and even then, there are other Safety prospects I like better.

Just b/c he is good in the box doesnt mean he isnt good in coverage. I just brought it up to assuage your frame fears.

In fact, the trend in the league now is for safeties that can do both. The #31 ONLY good in the box safety is extinct.

espn - Continues to add bulk to his frame while maintaining competitive speed for the position. Changes directions well, shows good burst out of cuts and is capable of matching up with slot receivers as well as tight ends in man coverage. Times jumps well, fights for the ball while it's in the air and can come down with jump balls. He fills hard when he reads run, closes well and looks to make the occasional kill shot when it's lined up. Flashes ability to read routes well, shows good range in zone coverage when he diagnoses the play on time and he has enough athleticism to cover the deep middle on those occasions. Vocal, gets teammates into position and is a leader on the field.

That might be the only scouting report I have seen that raves about his coverage skills.:D

I like the kid, i just don't think he's the next great Miami safety in the model of Reed or Taylor.

Fair enough, but I really dont have a high opinion of Watkins (at ALL). And I know some of you may differ with me on that. I think most people would agree, between Roy and Ken, one is prob gonna go. So we would need a repacement. KP may not be Ed Reed...but come on, Reed is, IMO the best coverage safety in the league. Sean was outstanding. KP is still gonna be good, and I think that safety has been a major problem for us, only to get worse in a yr. What position are we gonna be drafting from next yr??? (32?) Is there gonna be a guy there with KP's skills? I know the whole Dline vs coverage argument, but we DO need a safety...or will, and I just dont like what I have seen from our 5th rd talent pat watkins. If there was an oustanding DE there, then yeah...take him. But for where we have him evaluated at, and what our needs are gonna be, I think it makes sense. ANd I think the fact that he had an off yr may work to our advantage.

Man can't RW see the premier safeties play at or around 200-215 pounds excluding Adrian Wilson. :banghead: LOSE SOME WEIGHT!

Yep and Adrian Wilson has around 2% body fat and is a super sick athlete.

Boy, I may be the most unpopular guy in this thread but I say PLEASE NO. The comparisons to Ed Reed are ridiculous. Phillips has no where near the athletic ability Reed has. He's built like a corner, plays soft, does not tackle well, does not have instincts for the ball (7 career INT's in 3 years as a starter) and only stood out when he played next to Brandon Merriweather.

People are just falling in love with him because he is a safety from the U. Certinly not for what he did this year and for that matter last.

Who was the 24th pick last year....

RW is already under contract and will cost us a bundle if we unload him.

I dont see us keeping Hamlin. I thought we would initially but not after some of the crazy money being thrown at so-so FS's this off season.

When do you guys think KP will be taken in the draft?
I thought the same thing last season, Roy has taught me my faith in him was misplaced.

If they trade for Pac Trash, I wouldnt be surprised if we drafted Phillips in round one (or maybe even Tyrell Johnson in the 2nd)...

it makes sense because Hamlin is going to command a mammoth contract (and isnt worth it IMO) and RW didnt play well last yr...

not saying I am a huge fan of the idea, but I could see the logic
