also brooking is not playing third down. if he does it is just more proof that wade is a moron.

I'm really curious as to whether the staff thinks Carp can play on passing downs and replace Burnett.

I mean, it's been several years now. He's got to be ready now, or it's never.

Carp has one foot on the bust train and one foot off. As the train chugs along at 100mph Ryan Leaf is pulling and tugging at Carpenter to bring him aboard before intense bodily harm occurs.

true enough regarding Carp Bleu STar: gonna keep asking till I get an answer: how much do we save off our cap by cutting BARBIE?

I really wonder if the staff has no faith in him, why not trade him/cut him?

Maybe they will by end of the off-season . . . .

I think losing Kevin Burnett puts the heat on Dallas to draft either:

Darry Beckwith

or

Gerald McRath

The opportunity cost could be Dorell Scott in round 3. The Cowboys need that third rounder back that they gave Detroit.

Burnett is going to make some plays down in Miami.

Well, the draft is just around the corner.

Yawn. Burnett is a decent player but frankly the way people talk about him on here you'd think he was Otis Wilson or Carl Banks. Burnett ONLY excels in coverage. He's not stout and he's not durable. Let him go, he is eminently replaceable even by Barbie.

Burnett is physical. He will jack you up. Ask the TE from Pittsburgh. If you cover him up with three players in the 46 or have a bigger NT, he could play every down. He can play sideline to sideline and track ball carriers down, and he is a good blitzer. He gets penetration and pressures. He can play every down. He didn't get the chance in Dallas. He's fixing to get it. Good for him.

It isn't Burnett's fault that his main job in Dallas was covering. He does excell at it. He can run a 4.5. He can be complete football player. He is a good football player. Go ahead, play Barbie and watch him get smoked down the field.

If you havn't seen him play..look up his "strengths" and combine numbers. He's exactly what we need as far as coverage LB's.

Hmmm that's odd because from just about every scouting report I've read on this guy, it's been pretty much the opposite. "Not every athletic and injury prone. Does not have elite speed for the position, etc. "

I think Dallas should look elsewhere. We already have a thumper in Bradie James, we need a little bit more speed at the position.

There's still nothing reported about Burnett and the Dolphins by any of the Miami newspapers. Their sites don't even mention him being a possibility. None of the major NFL news sites have mentioned anything about it. And nobody on the main message board for Dolphins fans has been able to confirm anything, either.

Either this is a really early scoop by anonymous sources, or it's mere speculation or bad information.

You are right. I was looking on Football's Future (the Dolphins thread). The Cowboys thread was quoting your cap numbers. They referenced you.

I haven't seen anything either. I'd like to have him and Canty both back but its looking kind of unlikely now..

I quote NFL Draft Scout:

Positives: Excellent speed with wiry strength on the outside. ... Flips his hips open quickly and sticks to receivers. ... Forces running plays inside to his linebackers. ... Breaks down well when tackling in the open field, and is a solid tackler for his size. ... Is not afraid of contact with larger receivers or running backs and is willing to lower his shoulder. ... Comes off his man to tackle underneath receivers. ... Very good hand-eye coordination, will intercept the ball or break up passes.

They also said:

He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten in his second season as a starter after making four interceptions (including the game-sealer against Ohio State) and nine pass breakups.

4 ints and 9 passes broken up from a linebacker is OUTSTANDING coverage... they also quote the player himself saying:

I have great cover skills, can cover tight ends and backs one on one

And NFL Draft Countdown says:

Strengths:Above average athleticism...Outstanding instincts...Great speed and quickness...Terrific sideline-to-sideline range...Does a nice job in pursuit...Reliable tackler...Smart with a fantastic football IQ...Good awareness and can match up in coverage...Plays downhill and excels against the run...Active and aggressive...Very quick...Technically sound...Offers some versatility...Tough...Hard worker...Team leader.

I ran across another website some weeks back that said flatly that Beckwith was the best cover linebacker available in this draft, but I can't find it now...

Now, there is a LITTLE truth in the injury accusation-- Darry has missed one or two games each season, a total of six in his career (out of 53 games played)... but he is one of the most athletic cover linebackers in this draft... indeed, his skillset is quite similar to Burnett's...

were people really crying in this thread about losing burnett? thats funny

It sure is.

Burnett is a JAG who can't stay healthy and thinks he's way better than he is. Plus from what I've read and heard over the years, he's worried at least as much about getting paid as he is his play on the field. I won't miss him at all, *if* he's actually gone for sure.

Hey Adam, suppose we lost Burnett, would you then view it as a bad thing (i.e. losig someone we should have absolutely kept), or a not-so-bad thing (i.e. losing a guy we can easily replace, perhaps with Brooking, and not miss out talent-wise), or a good thing (i.e. thank goodness that we cleared a roster spot by offloading a waaayyyyy overrated player)? I tend to lean towards the last one, myself.

Burnett was OK in his role -- as a backup and nickel linebacker. He didn't jump out at me as someone who should be starting, at least not in our 3-4.

If we do lose him, what will determine whether it's a bad thing is who we replace him with in that role.

ridiculous panic...we lose a LB who was not a starter, a guy who is undersized for ILB in the 3-4, but a guy who can come in on passing downs because he's faster.

Those kinds of guys are NOT hard to find...we can easily draft another if we need one. Burnett was drafted fairly high to be a starter, and now he may receive starter money....it's nothing to panic over.

For the starting defense, Brooking is not a young guy and is not the long term answer, but while we look for a younger version, he is a definite upgrade...this is a big, strong, ILB who has led his team in tackles for years, including this past year...he and Brady James are going to make our ILB corps much better, and he already knows Wade and the system...there won't be a learning curve.

This was a great signing for peanuts. Again, Wade is the man regarding our defense now...it's all Wade, and he knows the system and the players better than anyone...I trust this move 100%.
