I think alot of you are confusing "overhyped" with "overrated".

Keyshawn didn't say Romo was "overrated"( not as good as people were making him out to be ) but that he was "overhyped" ( over promoted, publicized to excess ). Anyone who could not see that Romo was indeed being publicized outrageously has to be blind. He was and even still is all over the place, on every sports show doing interviews, on the gossip pages with Underwood, etc.

I've seen more national coverage of Romo than even of Peyton Manning, the former most hyped player out there. Sports writers all seemed to be wanting to be among the first to annoint Romo as the next Tom Brady. Hopefully he will be.

So it's amusing to see so many pour hatred onto Key for comments that they are misunderstanding. Romo was definitely overhyped ( extensively publicized ) ever since he took over as starter for the Boys. Overrated - I don't think so, and Key did not say he thought so either.

Good post... I thought about that as I posted my other comments... bottom line... its nitpicking.... splitting hairs....

I think Keyshawn is gonig to be a pretty good analyst for ESPN, and from what I hear, he will be coupled with Bill Parcells on occasion, which should make for some entertaining TV.

I agree, I think Tony Romo is a bit overhyped.

The number #2 team in the NFC (I assume you mean the Saints), he posted a 58.8 passer rating. The #3 team (Philly) he posted a 48.3 and the #5 team (NYG) he posted a 58.8 rating. It's not like he did well against those teams. He just happened to also play utterly horrid teams too and that helped as well. Detriot (111.6 rating) and ATL, which have the 25th and the 28th rated pass defenses respectively.
As I recall, up until week 7 or 8, everyone thought some guy named Rex Grossman was great too. But alas, he went through the trials and tribulations of a whole season and couldn't maintain.

Romo is overhyped.
Doesn't mean he isn't good.
Just means he hasn't played enough to solidify the hype that surrounds him.
The homerism here is blinding.

A (now) member of the media saying that a player is "overhyped" exemplifies irony.

Who "overhypes" him besides those who have the power to hype, i.e. the media? So, if Keyshawn was trying to somehow garner support for an anti-Cowboys stance through the media, and members of the latter accept his opinion, they are implicitly accepting fault because the "hype" is their own creation!

QED.

I'll go with guys we all know are great QBs and aren't coming off injuries.

Peyton Manning - 2 games in the 60s. 2 games in the 70s, 1 in the 80s.
Drew Brees - 1 game at 59.9, 2 games in the 60s, 1 in the 70s, 2 in the 80s.
Tom Brady - 1 in the 30s (Indy), 1 in the 50s (MIA), 3 in the 70s, 4 in the 80s.
Carson Palmer - 1 in the 50s, 2 in the 60s, 1 in the 70s, 2 in the 80s.

So, yes, the best QBs, every so often, go into the 50s and even lower. But not 3 out of 5 games. The rest all had less (over a whole season) games below 60. He's inconsistent, like I said.

Of the QB’s you listed above, what were there numbers the first year they started.

Wouldn’t that be the fair comparison?

Remind me not to watch ESPN this season. I think I'll stick to NFLN

Who cares what he says or thinks. I'll take the word of Aikman and Staubach over Johnson any day, any time. and they think he's the real deal.

Again - Key never said Romo was not the real deal. He was basically saying Romo has been covered in the press too much ( see the definitions of overhyped vs. overrated earlier in the thread ). Seeing all the Romo-Simpson then Romo-Underwood articles and all the Romo the new Tom Brady articles that exploded on the scene as soon as Romo did well for us and then all the Romo bobbled the FG articles, how can anyone NOT think all the coverage nationally of Romo hasn't been excessive. Even T.O. had to take a backseat to Romo for the last few months when it comes to articles on them nationally.

its funny how he pulled romo's name out of a hat, that is the only thing I think when I read his comments, which to me are no big deal.

Keyshawn's passing the torch

Quote:
It is 1:15 pm, Milan leads, 1-nil, on a controversial free kick just before the half, my phone rings and it is our NFL writer, Sam Farmer, just leaving the Keyshawn Johnson retirement news conference at Heritage Hall.

Farmer says Johnson's agent, Jerome Stanley, told him that his client had offers from the Raiders (he doesn't need them), the Patriots (they don't need him) and the Titans (USC alumni connection there with Jeff Fisher, Norm Chow). According to Stanley, the Titans offered two years, "close to $8 million," but ESPN/ABC put together a better package.

Stanley said ABC is considering using Johnson on "Dancing With the Stars" and as a fill-in for Regis Philbin.

Should we believe the hype? Speaking of which, at Heritage Hall, Johnson was asked to name the NFL's most over-hyped player.

"Tony Romo," was Johnson's reply. "He's with the Dallas Cowboys, he's played five games, he's an over-hyped deal." On paper, he's right about Romo.

On paper, Johnson has found a very capable successor.

Now Keyshawn will get a chance to talk a really good game

It is noon, no score yet in the Liverpool-AC Milan final, so I switch over the ESPNews for a quick news update and guess what's leading "The Hot List?" Keyshawn Johnson to retire!

(OK. Interesting. Especially from the local point of view. But top of the news lineup?) He's retiring to join ESPN!

(Oh, so THAT explains it.)

I think Key understands the scope that the media puts on a Dallas QB. Maybe, he thinks Romo needs to give less interviews (i.e. let his play on the field do his talking).

That is impossible he is the QB of the Cowboys and is expect to stand before the media, be it a good outing or a bad one.

Tony is overhyped. He has a chance to change that by having a good year this year. Careers weren't built in 10 games. We'll see how he does after a year under his belt.
Johnson should know something about being overhyped since he was overhyped the day he was drafted.
