best american lineup ever....

PG Magic, stockton, Kidd
SG MJ, Kobe, the logo
SF bird, Pippen, Lebron
PF Duncan, Malone, Barkley
C Russell, kareem, shaq
Oscar Robertson?
He's better than Kidd and Stockton for sure...maybe (gasp) even Magic. I won't go that far though just to avoid the uproar.

Chamberlain too. Replace whomever you like.

I would probably go something like this:

PG - Magic Johnson, Gary Payton
SG - Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant,
SF - Larry Bird, Elgin Baylor, Scottie Pippen
PF - Tim Ducan, Kevin Garnett, Karl Malone
C - Kareem Abdul Jabar, Hakeem Olijuwan

Reasoning:

Magic - Because he's Magic. Payton - Not only a great outside shooter but a great rebounder, assist man and the best defensive PG ever IMO.
MJ - Because he's MJ. Bryant - The closest thing anybody has ever seen to MJ at the 2 guard. Some say that he might be better (but I don't agree). Bird - No athletic ability at all but simply the best shooter I've ever seen. Maybe the smartest player I've ever seen. Baylor - He could do it all. Shoot the ball, rebound, play defense, pass, run the floor and create off the dribble. Best all around SF in the history of the game IMO. Pippen - A great player, could run the floor and finish, could rebound and pass but he's here because he is probably the best Defensive SF worthy of being here. (Actually, I thought James Worthy was more dangerous but not as good defensively and we needed defense more then we needed the rest). Duncan - Do it all PF that could play the post as well. Highly intelligent player and money when the game is on the line. Garnett - Defensive, Rebounding fool that can also give you offense in the post. He's the stopper at PF. Malone - He's the Mailman. He matches up with the smaller, more mobile PF you often see. Plus, Rain or Shine, he gets it done on the offensive side of the court. Kareem - Unstoppable offensively, dominating defensively plus he could pass as well as any big man ever and he could shoot FTs at crunch time. Unstoppable in post. Olijuwan - Mobile, shoot blocking, rebounding machine that could run the floor and finish. Also had an unstoppable turnaround jumper from anywhere on the court. The best true defensive Center I've ever seen. Better then Ewing and better then Russell IMO.

Not everybody on this list might be considered the best at their respective positions but for every position, I included somebody who did have an exceptional game but was the best defensive player at their position as well. I sacrificed offense for defense in some situations basically.

I considered Robertson over Payton but he held the ball too much. He simply held the ball and pounded it way to much for todays game. He would certainly be worthy of inclusion though. He was a great player and would still be a great player today but he would have to change his game and who knows how great he might be under that constraint. The only reason I did not include him and I actually did include him and take him off multiple times.

That's why said maybe not Magic.

But Oscar > Kidd and Stockton for sure.
And Oscar was no little guy either.
He AVERAGED a triple double one season (30.8 points, 11.4 asssits, 12.5 rebounds)
sick

Mashburn played for Kentucky and Carter, well, he's a great Dunker but I can't honestly put him at SG or SF over any of the guys on this team. Who would you take off, MJ, Sweet D, Charlie Scott, James Worthy, Bob McAdoo or Antwan Jamison?

Kobe isn't the only one that would lean towards 2012 team.

What do you expect a fierce competitor to say?

It would be interesting to see but I think it's ridiculous to call him an idiot over this. Difficult to compare different eras of the game too.

Dream would have size advantage but how in the world would Magic, Bird,etc.. Run with these young athletes?

wasnt the big O more of a shooting guard? but ya, he is another guy that can easily be in and i would have no problem with, wilt is a different story.

the guy got constantly abused by bill russell when it mattered, id rather have russell and kareem. wilt is just a numbers guy to me.

david robinson could run the floor as well as any big man ever, same with malone. the best bigs always win when everything else is pretty even, and that team still had in prime scottie pippen, a guy just as athletic as lebron, and MJ

its not like the dream team was just a bunch of geezers, they had athleticism too

Oh yeah!

A ton of NBA all-star appearances and championship trophies among that group.
And yeah, if the bench could be deeper you could add Carter (8 time all star) and Stackhouse (2 times)

Probably the only all-time college team that could rival it with starters and depth might be something from UCLA or maybe Kentucky.

Duke could probably put something together as well. They have had some great players.

Not too many great Pros though.
Grant Hill
after that, they've had some good ones...but few that were all stars many times. I guess Brand made it twice. Kyrie Irving may turn out to be great.
They've had some really solid pros--like Boozer and Battier.

kentucky will have an amazing team they could put together here in about 20 years from the looks of it, kansas could have a team with wilt and pierce, wake forest had timmy and CP3. and lets not forget the school that could put by far the greatest team out there, UCLA. i think outside of those schools, there really isnt another that could claim more 2 current or future hall of famers and a bunch of all stars.

He's probably right, to be honest.

Did anyone actually watch Kevin Durant play this postseason? LeBron? These guys these days would play better simply on athleticism.

They wouldn't. They'd get run out of the gym by guys like LeBron, Durant, Westbrook, Harden, CP3, Blake Griffin.
