Kobe: We'd beat Dream Team

I wonder how many dental implants the 2012 team would be getting after the game.
They would get roughed up and outsmarted.

LeBron could hold his own though...Kobe too.

If you could project back 20 years-which I still say is a stretch-adding those 4 to this year's team would make it interesting for sure.

But the game has changed a lot in 20 years and it continues to evolve. And workout regimines are also why players in general keep getting bigger, stronger, and faster. As in football, You have to gauge teams and players relative to the times. It's folly otherwise.

The fact that some will compare a team 20 years forward to the dream team tells you how advanced they were back then..

Oh yeah, WG was correct in saying that documentary was on NBA-tv if anyone wants to find it.

when i look at these guys, i doubt they would be much bigger or stronger than they were 20 years ago, or be able to jump higher, even if they were born 20 years later than they were..

Are you kidding? Russell never abused Wilt. Russell was a great player who also happened to play on a great team. That is why Russell has the hardware. He wasn't better than Wilt. Wilt's teams weren't as good. Wilt had to do it all and dominated. He was more than a numbers guy, but basketball is a team sport and Wilt was never on the best teams.

DFWJC;4617835 said:
I'm pretty sure Wilt was the most dominant player in the history of the NBA.

But stuff like that can always be debated.

so russell won because of his teammates? ya, i guess we would all rank john havlicek and whomever you think is the third best player from those celtics teams ahead of elgin baylor and jerry west, right?

He probably was but like you say, it's certainly debatable. For a large part of his career, he never played anybody his own size. It's easy to play against guys that are 6'9" when you are 7 foot but you are right, he was the most dominating player in the history of the game IMO and you really can't take that away from him.

yet he couldnt dominate 6'9" bill russell, which is why i think he is the greater player, he was a winner, not a stats guy, and he was what most consider the greatest defensive big man of all time.

Kobe was asked the question and answered. He said what he was supposed to say, as any real competitor would.

You're clearly just hating on Kobe.

i dont have a problem with kobe asnwering a question the way he did, but i havent heard the context of the whole thing, so i have no idea how it came up. im sure that even he knows deep down that they would get romped, though.

Not sure why you copied my post on that reply, as I said nothing against Russell whatsoever.

Chamberlain's best years by far were in Philly. He was much older and heavier by the time he got to LA. He did win NBA titles on 2 different teams...not sure why anyone would say he was not a winner.

Again, Russell is a hero of mine.

I'm just saying no single player dominated like Wilt--he scored like nobody else, rebounded about the same and also was on the all defesnive team a few times.

And finally, before you say Russell dominated Wilt in their matchups you may wish to check the stats:
In head-to-head matchups Russell's Celtics usaully came out ahead...however...
Wilt outscored Russell AND Wilt out rebounded Russell in both the regular and post seasons.

alright, i stand corrected. I decided to do some more research on the topic, and wilts teammates were pretty bad, i thought he was in LA at a lot younger age. I do hate when people hate on bill russell though, not saying you were, but people seem to need to bring him down to bring wilt up.

I did not mean to give the impression that I was bringing Russell down. Russell was great. He also had the luxury of playing on a great Celtics team. That is going to benefit any great player. Aikman, Irvin and Smith would have been great no matter where they played and they benefited by playing together.

I just knew that Russell never dominated Wilt. Those were great match ups when they faced off and Russell did well, but he didn't dominate Wilt. He didn't have to. He had a great cast of players around him. There were what, 4 or 5 other Hall of Famers on the Celtics during the 1960s. Those Celtics teams would have been very good without Russell and were great with him. He was the best player on a great team.

I think that if Wilt had played with better talent around him, he probably would have dominated, even against Russell. I don't believe Russell was the best defensive center of all time. I think he was great but not the best. The best of his era, certainly but at 6'9", he would have gotten dominated in todays game. It's just a matter of evolution. Russell was a great player. Wilt was also a great player and like Russell, I believe Wilt would not have had the kind of career he had if he had played in the modern NBA.

The rules, the interpretation of the rules and the spirit of the rules are different now. Both Wilt and Russell would have to modify their games in order to play in today's era. I heard that Wilt never fouled out of a game. That would be impossible in today's era. Russell was allowed a lot more contact as a defensive player than today's players are allowed.

I get the competitive drive behind this from him but...No Kobe. You wouldn't.

I don't get what people want him to say. We would get destroyed by 30. Then people would be giving him greif for not supporting his own team.

People took Kobe's comment way out of context. He said his team could win in ONE game not a series.
Did he hypothetically mean that if his team and the 1992 Dream Team met only once that they would win that single game? If so, I disagree with him.

In the Olympics, you only get one game so I don't really think anybody took Kobe's comments out of context. He said it would be close but they could pull it out.

I'm saying it would not be close and he's lucky that they don't have opportunity to play because it would be ugly. The Dream Team would smash the 2012 team IMO.

Yes and I disagree with him as well, but it's a ridiculous comment by any means. It's one game. Anytime you got Kobe, LeBron, and Durant who are the three best players in the league you got a chance.

I agree with that as well. A chance but not, a good chance of beating them. No.
