News: Kris Richard: Dallas Cowboys Defense is a "Work in Progress"

If you're saying the scheme has limitations, then I agree 100% - not a fan. But you'd be hard pressed to find that many other secondary units as good.

The Lewis situation is a head scratcher. No way Brown is better IMO.

In terms of what? Raw talent? Production? Stats?

For example, I am not sure how one concludes there aren't that many secondary units as talented as ours when you consider we don't have a lot of talent at S.

He needs to be the DC, effective now.

The BBDB scheme that Marinelli wants to use doesn't work with Richards 4-2-5.
Oh horse manure. Richard IS the defensive coordinator right now, and he's much worse than Marinelli with his faceguarding technique BS. Did you ever ponder, even for a second, why Seattle got rid of this hack? Now you know...

Agree to disagree.

Agree to disagree.

I am generally curious how you come up with this notion that we are one of the most talented secondaries in football. Surely, the results don't speak to that. We are one of the worst teams at getting interceptions, for example. We are in the bottom half of the league in terms of key stats like opposing pass ratings, etc.

Now I get the argument that without a pass rush, a secondary can struggle, but surely a secondary as talented as you think they are would be better at getting interceptions, correct?

It doesn't matter how I explain my point of view, you will just argue to argue. Your mind is set and I couldn't care less to change it. The entire defense works as a unit. If one of the 3 parts fails the whole thing fails. Of course a garbage D line will affect the other components, it's not even debatable. Expecting the secondary to be stacked with HOF talent that shuts offenses down is silly at best with this D line. I am by no means suggesting the secondary is elite, but it is a very good unit.

So again, agree to disagree.

Kris Richard: "We have yet to put together for a whole entire game, our style, for who we are,” said the Cowboys defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator. “From what we know to be true. For what we believe to be true. When we do it, the proof is there. There isn’t enough consistency there with it yet. So we’re still a work in progress.”

Thoughts on Kris Richard and his process? I think we all know where this is going.
He's not the DC. Rod should be talking. Jerry is either protecting him, or scapegoating him. He'll be used to fill the Rooney Rule. I hope, he has the balls to turn down the interview.

I was generally curious as to how you reach this conclusion. It seems your view is simply the eye test here but I was generally curious if there was some statistical measures or similar (PFF grades, Football Outsiders analysis, etc.) that led you to believe our secondary was performing better than people thought and ergo, they are more talented than people think.

Having such a bad defensive line affects the rest of the defense immensely, so I don't see statistics as the only way to determine strength. Just like a QB having a horrible O line will diminish their statistics and success. very little mistake is amplified when the defensive line can't get to the QB or stop the run. Suddenly *pick a player* is a bad tackler or can't cover.

I don't know how much of it is a mix of what Marinelli wants and what Richard wants. It was made clear last year, though, that Richard was calling the shot during the game, so I'm not sure how much Marinelli is responsible for the failures.

It could be a lot like what's happening on offense, though. You have one person (Richard, Moore) essentially trying to do the best they can with another person's (Marinelli, Garrett) scheme. The question is whether that simply does not work or none of the coaches are particular good at scheming.
I believe that both Rod and JG are just motivation guys at this point (not that that is working). I think we are going to get crushed by the Eagles, and Rod will be out. Then we can see Richard and what he brings. But the idea that Rod is holding him back to me is crazy. Our secondary is getting torched, and turnovers are few and fair between. Richard will be exposed, but personally I believe our players just aren't good enough for today's game. How many years have we heard, bend but don't break. That's just an excuse for the fact that the defense can't shut down anyone at will.

We kept the same squad from last year and replaced Gregory with Quinn. Still a work in progress?

Sounds like offenses know how to expose their gap and coverage schemes and the coaches don't know how to counter.

Oh now it's a work in progress? What happened to the whole top 5 defense thing?

Also a fraud. Completely understand why he got fired in Seattle. Let’s see this defense has Lawrence, Quinn, Collins, Smith, LVE, Jones, Lee, and Chido. I count 8 guys that can and have played at pro bowl levels in their career. Yet the defense is a work in progress. This is the worst group of coaches in the league. They really are the worst.

KR Hate?!?

Really?

We had enough of Marinelli.

Give someone else a try. [who happens to have a recent Super Bowl ring.]

Marinelli still the DC.

Has been from day 1.

This system is predicated on alll parts being in the right place to work, and when it is,works good....when it doesn’t though...it’s a cliff dive. I don’t like the contrast in that. It’s too opposite ends and fleeting, Slability is what system they should invest in. Not pie in the sky high risk high reward programs. It’s a scam. You rarely ever are smooth running in the NFL. Give us something more solid.
