Talent is undoubtedly a big factor and I wouldn't disagree with you in that one bit.
But I think the quality of coaching is making a difference as well. The Cowboys currently have the luxury of having two defensive coordinators. And those two coaches have essentially agreed to split the team in half, "you coach the front end and I'll coach the back end". More specifically, I think Marinelli is focused on the defensive line, which has always been his preference anyway.
And Richard's early call to put Byron Jones at corner full time looks like genius. And he's also blitzing his linebackers more than Marinelli ever did. And you can look it up that they played a big role in the six sacks the defense had against the Giants.
The results are that the defense is playing better at all levels. And I think that it's a combination of both better talent and better coaching coming together, as well as two coaches focused on their best roles.
He just might turn out to be the best assistant coach acquired under the Garrett regime. I know the sample size is rather small at this point but the difference in the secondary play and the defense overall is markedly better. The defensive backs actually turn around to locate the ball now. It seems like years since that has happened at that position. And you’ve got to love all the press coverage.
Our next D coordinator in the making. Let’s hope it comes to fruition.
Also was he calling plays. When the cameras cut to him doing the game, it looked like he had a call sheet in his hands and he was on the headphones and Marinelli did not have phones.
This was the second time I noticed this as in a preseason game I seen the same. Has anyone heard anything?
This is the one thing that has stood out for me. Of course, we saw some of that from Awuzie last year, and Byron Jones wasn't playing CB last year, so it's hard to know how much of it is Richard and how much is just better players. I tend to think Richard has something to do with it though.
I think it's the players. We have players that don't get beat like a drum and they have time to look for the ball, rather than trailing.

Yes. That's true. On the other hand our linebackers are so fast it is allowing defensive flexibility in play calling that we haven't had in many years. The linebackers can actually cover receivers in a way that they couldn't in years past.
As a side note, in the Panthers game, I have heard commentators state that the Panthers were intentionally trying to match up certain players on Lee, implying that he was the weak king which was initially surpising, but makes sense now.
Was Lee already falling off the cliff last year and we just didn't see it? The team obviously thought that linebacker play was critical since they drafted one very early.
From what Broaddus said, Rod still calls the plays, but he's let Kris take over the secondary and also trust him enough to try some of his ideas.
Thanks for the update but I’m not sure how you have separate calls for the secondary and front seven. I am curious on how that works. Also I didn’t see headsets in Marinelli the other night but maybe I missed it.
He had it. What you probably saw was Richards communicating with Rod through the headsets. It's why Jason where's one too. You'd be surprise at some of the coversations that go on.
Do you think that's a wise move?,,,or,,,just a sound bizzness decision?,,,, my point being is that #50 should make one Hell of a linebackers coach for some team once he's through playing,,, I don't really know just how articulate he is or about his 'people's skills' in conveying the message in a retentive manner, but, IMO ,He'd be a good one,,,,Hell, who knows? He might just wanna fade out& raise channel cats& mallard ducks somewhere up in Iowa, while limping away into old ageThe whole league knows Lee can't change direction without tweaking a hammy. I think we move on from him next off season. That will save us 7 million in cap space.

The way he’s coaching now that just may be the case. He’s certainly getting tangible results.DC??? He might be the next Head Coach.
