Number 1s are too valuable.

Trading for wr does not work out in general and can really hold your team hostage in the future.

Nice theory, but...

#1 draft picks fail too. Sometimes they peak too early, sometimes their heads just aren't there, sometimes a freak injury renders the pick useless, sometimes it's a pick for the wrong system/coach/time. Even in the first round, there are gambles.

Here you have a proven commodity. There are no awards for the most first-round picks, not even for what you do with them.
