Sounds to me like he just grew up a front runner, rooting for whatever team was good (Bulls, Cowboys, Yankees) instead of developing any allegences of his own. It doesn't have anything to do with him not liking his home town more than he enjoyed cheering for winners growing up.

He started out as a front runner and then has stuck with those teams even after they stopped winning and producing losing seasons. He is not a front runner now. He is just a fan of his teams.

Ahhhh, the age-old "displaced fan" argument! I've had this discussion more than once being a Dallas fan living in DC. I've been called a bandwagoneer, front-runner, etc. but the fact is you like who you like! What I hear the most is "are you from TX" to which I quickly respond " No, I support the team not the city or state they reside in"! For me, the first game I'd ever truly sat down and watched was S/B XII when we stomped a mudhole in the Orange Crush and I was instantly drawn to the Cowboys. From the dapper Landry to the OL "up-n-down" move before they got set to the flex defense to the stars that were there...how could you not like that team?! I've been a loyal FAN ever since! Lebron is probably no different except he fell in love with the 90s version.

From fanhouse...

Clearly, fans in Cleveland are a little put off by LeBron James wearing a Yankees hat to the Indians' game last night, and honestly, I think they have a point. This isn't Tom Brady walking around town wearing a Yankees hat caught on film by the paparazzi, this is LeBron James flaunting his allegiance to a rival team on television. My favorite reaction so far? Former Indians pitcher and Hall of Famer Bob Feller:

"I'm going to a Cavaliers game and sit right by their bench, wearing a Detroit Pistons cap. Let's see how LeBron likes that."

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. LeBron is a front-runner, not a fan. There's a huge difference. He's a Yankees fan, Bulls fan and Cowboys fan ... and I'm willing to guess at some point in his childhood he pined after a Miami Hurricanes lunchbox. If the Indians really want LeBron to wear a hat, they'll need to win a title first.

But c'mon, is anyone actually surprised? LeBron has had everything come to him on a silver platter, he has absolutely nothing in common with being an underdog. Goliath doesn't cheer for David -- he wouldn't even know how.

I just think in general you should cheer for the local teams, and if you cheer for two of the three of the four local teams, but in another sport you like somebody else that's cool.

I do not like any of my "local" teams, well except my beloved UCLA Bruins that is. Growing up my Aunt and Uncle lived in Dallas. I can honestly say I have been to Texas stadium more times then any sports arena or stadium out here in Cali. Oh and BTW I back all Dallas teams, Cowboys, Mavs, Stars and even the Rangers although they always seem to piss me off.

I grew up liking the local teams because that's who my friends, family, and neighbors liked. It was about being part of the community. So I didn't really choose a team - it was chosen for me. The idea of choosing a team seems strange.

Yes you were a front runner. You chose to like the cowboys because they were winning and that made you feel good about yourself. Now, maybe you were still a cowboys fan when things went south. But I still think it's embarrassing to like a team because they were good when you first started watching football. I understand why people in Texas and surrounding areas like the cowboys. Or why someone might like them because their dad does. But I can't understand liking a team just because they are good.

Hmm...so I guess it is okay to become a fan of a team when they are losing, but not because they are winning? Okay, that explains you being a Commander fan. Anyway, Lebron has not stopped being a fan even though Dallas' last SB was in 1995 and there hasn't been a playoff win in over 10 years (since he was 12). Yea, he only likes the Cowboys because they are good.

So in other words, you didn't make a choice, your family chose for you? I guess it is a crime to make up one's own mind about who to root for and to stick with it. I forgot we were living in Iran and not the United States.

The power of your logic is self-evident.

Not.

So you was born into to the least and decide to conform to those around you to avoid any conflicts. I understand you a closet cowboys fan but didn't want to break anyone hearts and since you weren't from texas you felt like you shouldn't root for them. I understand you now.

This right here explains why America thinks most Cowboys fans are a joke, and why the real Cowboys fans must be so frustrated with fellow "fans." If you have to "make up your mind who to root for" then I'm guessing you aren't very passionate about your team. Being a fan isn't an intellectual exercise, it's complete irrational stupidity - being "fanatic."

With the logic that you are using as well as basically many Commander fans in the DC area when it comes to what team a person is rooting for really shows how much of a joke you all actually are. You said it yourself that he isn't a fan. He is a frontrunner which is stupid. I can see if you call him that 15 years ago when he was 8 years old. But you do realize that none of his favorite teams have won a championship snice 2000, right? Under your logic, as well as Hyperion's logic, we are ALL front runner fans. Yes, that includes you.

America loves the Cowboys just as much as it hates 'em. The ratings bear that out. Based on your "community" nonsense, you must stop rooting for the deadskins if you leave the DC area because you will no longer be a part of that community. That's stupid. There are many many reasons to develop an allegiance toward an organization. Proximity is the least intellectual reason of all. You act like people outside Dallas are idiots for loving the Cowboys, but it doesn't take any brains whatsoever to root for the "home" team. Have you ever considered that?

This November will be my 30th anniversary as a Dallas Cowboys fan. I started liking them as a teenager growing up in Detroit (yes TV exposure makes a difference) and my love for them has grown ever since. The Dallas Cowboys Football Club has an appeal that can't really be put into words. There's charisma surrounding that star. Even if you hate them, you have to admit that there is something special about the Dallas Cowboys. They have that "it" factor that other ball clubs do not. And they have stood the test of time. You can't say we only like the Cowboys because they win. Believe it or not the Cowboys have had some down time, some low down time, but we Cowboys fans are still here.

You refer to your fanhood as stupidity. That's probably what it is. But for me, being a Dallas Cowboys fan is a totally rational and sane part of my being. I am just as fanatical as any fan who happens to reside close to Irving, TX. I'd wager that I'm more fanatical than many of them. If you don't understand that or if you think my fanhood is somehow inferior to you rooting for your home team, then that is shortsightedness on your part.

I'm from Chicago, I came over to America when I was 5 years old, I'd never seen an NFL game in my life and the 'Boys were the first team I'd ever seen play. I was attracted to the star and at that point had no idea who the good teams were or not. The Cowboys just stuck with me and I became a die-hard. I always root for the Bears unless they play the Cowboys. In every other sport except for football I root for Chicago teams.

Actually, ratings would not differentiate between loving a team and hating them. Most of Howard Stern's fans hate him.

Actually community is why I became a Commanders fan. There is no logical necessity for me to stop becoming one just because I move. And if you had bothered to read my post you would see that I have considered that it doesn't take any brains to root for the local team. Of course choosing a team because it wins is evidence of insecurity not brains.

You were able to see more Cowboys games on TV than Lions games?

Of course it can. They have been very successful. Some people like rooting for successful teams.

Are you really suggesting that Cowboys fans have had to endure anything comparable to other fanbases? Again, that "it" factor is five superbowl rings and plenty of other winning seasons.

If your fandom is sane and rational then it is not fanatical. It is not sane and rational to care so much about the success and failure of 53 people you do not know, whose success does not impact your life.

I'm sure the both of you enjoyed rooting for Kosuke Kitajima, Yang Wei, and Alain Bernard at the Olympics. How silly of me to back the U.S. just because I was born here. That's downright Iranian of me.

Funny that you have that Skip Bayless sig, because he has a deep disdain for LeBron James, calling him either Prince James, or LeBrick James.

Why he rags on the guy is beyond me.

Who wants to play for the Nets? If you want to play in half empty buildings you would go to LA and play for the Clippers, at least the weathers nice.
by that time the Nets would have moved to Brooklyn where i imagine attendance and hype for the team will be tremendous. well if Lebron signs with them...
