Lets not let Roy "Who me" Williams slide...

From Cowboyzblog:

Over the season, I have waffled on Roy Williams. For the last few seasons, I have not been a fan, but this year started thinking maybe it was Zimmer's fault. While Zimmer is still in my doghouse, I will no longer waffle on Roy.

After today (and most of the season), I feel he may be the most overrated player in Cowboys history. Herschel had a lot of hype. He was good but not great, so he could challenge Roy, but given the contracts, the sponsorships (how many times do I have to see what a great house he has in the AT&T commercials?), the Pro-Bowls and the constant praise by fans, I'm convinced NO COWBOYS PLAYER has done so little to deserve so much.

Does he make plays? Sure, but only when he's near the line of scrimmage or moving towards the line of scrimmage.

Problem is, he's a safety—the last line of defense—and has to play, many times, with his back to the line (he shouldn't really, but Roy can't back-peddle) or running away from the line of scrimmage. Has he ever taken a geometry class? I've never seen someone (again, he's supposed to be GREAT) take so many poor angles when the ball is in the air.

I'll admit he's made some plays (McNabb threw it right to him) and a few big hits, but just like that, he gives them all back with awful penalties and poor help in coverage, which often times leads to long TDs.

Said it before, and I'll say it again, he's the defensive equivalent of Drew Bledsoe.

He gets a INt last week and everyone loves him. Then this and arrrg!!! He causes Turnovers and he hits hard. He gets some INt's too. I'd take him over any safety in the NFL...

Exactly!

When you are a SS and then you go to help in the FS role... he is hit or miss, 50-50 with INT's.... he is what he is.... the guy shows up on gameday... enough already

That's it? That's your rebuttal? Bled is slow, Flo has trouble with speed rushers, and Roy sucks in coverage. Facts is facts. What can't you just concede the obvious?

"But Roy has three picks!"

Yeah? Well T-Ham scored a number of TDs. Guess that made him a good running back.

that ROy is no worse than any SS in the game in coverage? and makes plays in coverage as much as he gets beat?

sorry I didn't have more of a reply, just tired of repeating the same thing that bounces right off your guy's thick skulls

I also wanted to say that on that goal line stand Roy was the first one to hit the runningback 3 out of the 4 downs.

Say what you want, but Roy is a hell of a player. He's got his weaknesses as well as his strengths but on this board, it seems people only look at one or the other

I would still like to see Williams drop a few pounds in the offseason. He probably weighs at least 226 which is too heavy. I would like see him go down to at least 220 even 215 if he could. He would lose a little on his run stopping ability, but the defense doesn't need his help to stop the run. They need for him to get a little quicker and dropping weight would help.

Yes he is an elite safety in the NFL, but he does need to improve his coverage skills. He is a good safety, but adding more quickness by dropping weight could help him achieve greatness.

That's fair. And it was a great play on Portis.

This issue with our deep support in coverage, and it's not just Roy, is disturbing. The three division games we've lost (1-3 now in NFCE play), they have been none too hesitant about attacking our deep third. And it's killing us.

I was one who believed the offensive line would be this club's undoing. The heavies up front take a backseat in that department.

How is it that after 3 years, BP hasn't addressed the FS position yet? It's mind boggling. I bet we will be still discussing the FS position(lack of a good one) in 2010.

O-ver-ra-ted, clap, clap, clap, clap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's trade Roy Williams for Sean Taylor so we'd have a guy that's given up 5TD's with NO interceptions rather than the guy we have now who has given up 2 TD's and has 3 interceptions.

Roy is so terrible my arse!

I'd trade Roy on Draft day in a heartbeat ad it may be a reality OR we may have to move him to LB - that's how disgusting he is when the ball is in he air.

And it's not just this board - the whole NFL now knows it -Roy is a liability pass coverage wise and that he's overrated all together.

And Can you tell me the last sack he's had when he shoots the gap? he ALWAYS gets picked up ...

And how are they going to trade Williams?? Didn't he get a ten million dollar bonus?? People are going to redicule me for this statement, but I would love to see Williams traded for a top ten pick. We could use that pick on an awesome tackle and spend the other number 1 pick on a guard. Roy Williams is an elite safety, but that postion is not as important as LT. Dallas is stuck with Williams for better or worse. Hey maybe he drops ten pounds in the offseason and regains his rookie year coverage skills which were not bad at all!! He only needs to drop a few pounds and his coverage skills will improve.

The thing about Roy to me is one week he'll make the plays and the next week he wont. Course he's right there with TO in that regard. Mistakes in the Giants game, good games against the Panthers and then some mistakes today.

Hell if Romo can play 2 wonderful games in a row, why cant those guys.

So guess what.. we'll see Roy lay the wood and make some plays against Zona in a win.. then after the Indy game we'll be having this same discussion. Book it.

Yeah right...we'd just draft another TE or KR...haha

Ronnie Lott had more talent in the piece of finger he cut off to play the 2nd half then Roy does in his whole overweight body....

:laugh2:

Peyton Manning is going to make a highlight reel out of Roy like Tracy McGrady did to Shawn Bradley. Yeah, Roy might make a couple of good hits on Addai or the WRs, but Manning will abuse him in the end.

Every player has a weakness it is a matter of the staff to put that player in a position that best masks his weakness not exploit it. The defensive system that is in place leaves the soft underbelly of each player exposed on most plays. I don't know if this on purpose or just fitting a sqarw peg into a round hole, it fits but there is a lot of the whole still showing.
