As many who have been on this board for awhile know, I don't believe RLW is the be all, end all at safety. I think he's a good player but he can be taken advantage of, and often is. Roy did make plays in yesterdays game and none were any bigger then his short yardage play, late in the 4th against Portis. 3rd and 2, if Portis gets that first down, the game is over IMO. Roy dropped him for a 3 yard loss. That was a great play, worthy of praise. Roy dropped a sure INT and he took a terribly bad angle on the deep ball to Randell-El but then, as I have said since the day we drafted Roy, anybody who watched him play in college new he was not good in pass coverage. The question really should be, why do we continue to put him in positions where he can be beaten? Newman got beat initially on that pass but in truth, Newman has been the most solid defensive player we have. He is human and every player will make mistakes. He made one there. That's why you have deep safety help. It's not easy to locate the ball in the air, judge speed, angle and distance of both ball and player but it is what good pass coverage safeties do. Roy, a guy who goes for the hit on almost every play, made a mistake on that particular play by not doing what he normally does. He tried to play the ball rather then going for the hit. Easy for me to say. I'm not out there playing. Still, it was a play that he should have been able to make. Roy just isn't a good cover safety and he probably never will be. We know this. Who is to blame here? Is it Roy for trying to make the plays he obviously doesn't play well or is it the coaching staff for continuously putting him in position to have to make them? I have always hated that interchangable BS scheme with the safeties. Most teams don't play it. Why? Why do most teams play a traditional scheme in man to man as opposed to what we play? Get that figured out and you will get most of the issues we have with Roy figured out, IMO.
