Let's talk cap

If you force an angry Tony Romo to sit on the bench an entire season uninjured and unhappy ......... you are asking for a ***storm from the media and a distraction larger than anything we felt last year.

Its a dumb move any way you slice it regardless of cap space,

Yep.

And it won't happen, i.e. Romo sitting on the bench in Dallas as the backup to Prescott for the 2017 season.

Great thoughts on Romo, but the fact is unless he is going to be the starting QB for us next year, there is no way he is staying. Just have accept it because it is going to happen.

I could see us pulling triggers on Fred and Smith to free up room but that's about it. Definitely Fred, maybe you hesitate on Smith with his back problems this season.

Romo a June 1st cut puts you in a much better cap position where you can be aggressive in free agency if you would like but you are also looking at making Martin the top paid guard in the league before the season if that's what he wants.
If the Cowboys gain $10M from designating Romo a "June 1st cut", they don't get to use that money until June 2nd, so it would not help them in the main free agency spending period.

It would help indirectly. We will be under the cap regardless so we can spend the money that we may have designated for Martin, other in house investments or rookies (I believe you can do that) on free agents and then take care of in house business after June 1st.

You are right. There are ways it could be helpful prior to June 1.

I like Romo more than most but you can't lose him for nothing. This is a business and the business is winning SBs. Letting Romo go for nothing when the cap savings is minimal makes no sense.

It is a business and if you don't treat your long time employees well, word spreads and no one wants to work for you.

Tell that to the Patriots....they treat their players like cattle and guys practically go there to play for free

Martin doesn't have to be extended until 2019 and his cap hit will be small for the first couple seasons........ he is not a consideration

Getting the 10m from Romo after June 1st would pay for the Draft Picks and leave the 5m cushion they like for contingencies

They can easily get under the cap in March with a handful of cuts(Free, Hanna, Wilber, Morris) and a handful of restructures(TSmith, TCrawford, Dez, TFrederick)

No he won't.

If push comes to shove he'll request and get his release.

That 14 mil isn't guaranteed.

As a starter for another team he would get something in that vicinity, with the bulk of that guaranteed.

Fitzpatrick got $12 mil this season. Romo is better than him. And there are several teams that need a better starting QB.
It isn't just that. People are ignoring the fact that cutting/trading him now frees up the space next year for 25 million vs a cut next year only freeing up 16 million. You have an additional 14 million in extra space over the next 2 years plus get an asset(s) in return. It's not as simple as "oh he only costs 5 million, keep him".

Romo as a b/u for 1 year is not worth losing 14 million total in cap space during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

I'm going to be honest. I'm thinking really hard about making Tyrone Crawford a June 1 cut, or asking him to renegotiate. A June 1 cut clears up over 7 million on the cap.

Same here. It's an awful contract and they just need to admit their mistake and move on. The guy's not even a starter anymore and he lacks a true position in this defense. The sooner they admit they screwed up and move on from that deal, the better. It's not all the player's fault as he was drafted to be a 3-4 end and has been bounced around, but the deal is just terrible and one the team really needs to get out of.

Thanks for posting this. So if I understand this correctly if he retires we have 19 million in dead money all on 2017's cap. IF he plays with his current deal as a backup then his cap hit will be 24.7 million. So regardless we're kind of screwed cap wise either way. I'd just assume keep him because if it's a cap hit of 19 million if he leaves and then we have to find a suitable backup, bye Sanchez, that could cost a couple million and we'd have he same cap hit as if Romo stays.

I hope Romo's wife likes it in Dallas and doesn't want to uproot the family and he stays as a backup. Dak and Romo as our quarterbacks would be a tremendous luxury. Best case scenario is Romo takes a paycut to be the back up, but I think I'm dreaming on that one.
Do people honestly think Romo has any real interest in being a backup? Seriously? Not gonna happen. The only motivation for Romo to keep playing and not retire is for the opportunity to win a SB. He's not doing that as a backup. Not to mention I think he has been too good a player, and therefore has too much personal pride to just sit there and collect cheque's, playing as a backup when he knows he's better than that. If the family is the concern, he's probably more likely to just retire. This is not even mentioning the fact that his name is actually Tony Romo Jones Jnr, and the team will probably bend over backwards to accommodate his wishes. The only way Romo even considers sticking around is if the team gives him a genuine chance to compete for the job. He even asked for the opportunity during the season.

  1. We are very tight against the cap/over the cap
  2. We will do what we can with Romo to cut his hit and possibly spread it over two years, or if we can work a trade with someone who really wants him, his contract can be restructured to help all 3 parties get what they want.
  3. We have to resign some of our own guys...at least 1 of the 2 receivers, at least 1 of the 2 CBs, at least 1 of the 2 QBs who know the offense, at least 1 of the 2 safeties who played a great deal.
  4. Then do you want to keep Terrell McClain, arguably our best interior DL most of the year? Do you keep Dunbar or McFadden or sign someone else or use a draft pick on a backup? Do you let Escobar go with Witten this close to the end, or do you believe Hanna and Swaim are quality, or do you draft a TE? Jack Crawford, Ryan Davis, Gachkar? Do you resign Church or Wilcox or both? Do you resign Leary or Cooper or expend another draft pick on a guard.
  5. We have a great young nucleus, but this offseason is critical because you have to resign some of these guys who contribute big time to your team; they can't all be replaced in the draft, and OG, QB, WR all have to have at least one resigning or you're expending half your draft on offense.
  6. We probably have to sign a DE in free agency if we really want to make an impact. At pick 28 in round one, we aren't going to find a guy like Bosa who contributes next year....odds are slim that you find a bona fide pass rushing DE at that spot, period.
