That's just not how Jerry runs this team. Regardless, we will turn a page next season. It's going to be tough but we can't have a backup QB making over 20 million and that is what he is at this point. As of right now, designating Romo a June 1st cut saves us over 14 million dollars.

That is a lot of money to upgrade this defense.

We could've traded Ware, Jerry released him out of respect because Ware requested.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the kindness Jerry showed to Ware may come back and benefit us. Something tells me that we resign Ware as a pass rushing specialist. If he hits the market and wants to play, it would make too much sense.

You know that could happen.

He'd come in at a reasonable price and he'd play a couple hundred snaps.

Dang Giants spent like 200 million last year in free agency and they are still under the cap by 31 million.

I would cut Crawford today if it were up to me.

Great idea.

It's right up there with Wade Wilson being a horrible QB coach last season.

The production simply is not there. No matter what the excuse is.

Tyrone Crawford tied Terrell McClain for fourth place in Bob Sturm's season total for defensive splash plays this season.

Seems like the production is there.

There's no reason to get rid of a good, young player just because he's making more money than some fans think he should.

There are plenty of holes to fill without needlessly creating another.

That's exactly the problem... You cut Crawford, you gain no cap space this season (unless you split it over two seasons but you're still not gaining anything really) and then you have to replace him and hope the replacement can come close to Crawford's production.

Crawford was given too large of a contract... But that doesn't put him in "Nick Hayden" territory.

Exactly.

Keep Tyrone Crawford, continue building the DL, and let things sort themselves out .

Crawford played with a bad shoulder in 2015 that required surgery following the season. Crawford gutted it out and did what was best for the team instead of simply taking care of himself.

Dallas will open up a ton of cap space whenever Tony Romo's contract comes off the books.

But spending loads of cash of free agents you don't know is not a solid business plan. The Cowboys believe in spending big on their own players and using the college draft to replenish the roster.

That doesn't mean we won't see any big ticket free agents come aboard, just that they will likely be few and far between.

The next mammoth bank roll the Pokes fork over will be to Zack Martin, possibly before or during training camp in July/August.

The $200 million is total value of the contracts...the first year hit for those probably wasn't more than 30m. Typically the contracts are weighted towards the end.

You realize that $200 million is more than the annual cap for a team, right?

The Giants only have a few premier players....Manning, OBJ, JPP, Vernon, Collins. OBJ and Collins are going to have to be paid among the best at their positions and JPP is unsigned. The cap will catch up to the Giants just like it does to everyone at some point.

I like where your head is at, but that's not approaching it from the real "value" you'd get by releasing him.

The restructures and bonuses are all sunk costs at this point, that's where the dead money comes from. We pay that regardless if we keep him.

I know you know that releasing him means you don't have to pay his salary. For all intents and purposes, that means a 7.25 mill cap savings. (obviously future years for his salaries too then but we know that)

By accelerating the dead money too, after 2018, it'd also save an average of like 10 mill against the cap for two years.

It makes sense. A lot of cap room in 2018, could save $$ on the cap that pays for a reasonable rotational player, and then 2019-2020 you're clear of his deal and have an extra 9-10 mill in cap each year. That's a pretty good player or a few solid players each year in FA.

Just depends what you think Crawford is capable of going forward.

Maybe. If I just wanted a productive member of a rotation, I'd re-sign McClain for half of Crawford's salary and use the extra 3.5 mill to help sign a vet CB or WR.

Makes a lot of sense to me. You can get Crawford production out of someone making a lot less money.

One thing people totally miss when considering the salary cap...is how many players are under contract.

Let me provide a simplfied hypothetical example.

Team Blue might have $44 million free, but only have 31 guys under contract. So they would have need to sign 22 players with $44 million. ($2mil average per player)

Team Red might have $30 million free, but have 43 guys under contract. They'd have $30 mil to spend on 10 guys ($3mil average available per player)

Team Red has less money but is quite arguably in a better situation and could more readily splurge on some special players.

Using Over the Cap as a guide, they have us over the 2017 cap by $6.7MM.

What are the likely moves that will come to free up space and how much space can be created? Certainly Smith and Frederick have contracts made for restructuring and I saw someone else suggest we could open up as much as $19MM of cap space between restructuring the two.

What about Witten? He carries a big cap number of over $12MM for 2017.

Cutting Free carries $2MM in dead money but $5MM in cap savings.

If you trade Romo, it appears another $5MM in cap savings as well.
I also think we can expect about 2.3 m of unused cap space to be rolled over plus some credited from Rolando.

Oh I understand.

But I think cutting him is easier than replacing him and his production.

He's not big-sack guy (as we know) but still 4.5 sacks is 4.5 sacks.

He's not a full-time 4-3. Let him split snaps between DE and as pass rusher DT and he's a decent player IMO.

And those 10m hits you are losing in further years are the money that will be paying guys like Martin with down the road.

Nah.

Don't think so.

Romo isn't going to sit behind Prescott... He just won't and I doubt the Cowboys would force that on him.

He either starts in Dallas or he's on another team.

lol, he won't. What's he going to do? Retire?

The Cowboys would have to EAT $14M and THEN accept a POS backup QB.

Only a DAMN FOOL would do that. The NFL is a business and Romo is taking almost $20M to sit the bench.

You DAMN right he will do it.

It doesn't make sense to me.

Tyrone Crawford was signed to an expensive extension with the expectation he'd be playing UT on the line. He did in 2015, but played most of the season with one arm due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. Crawford moved to LDE on the fly in 2016 because of the need for a run defender.

It worked.

And that was with Crawford spending the entire previous off-season focusing on playing UT, not LDE.

He's a good player and will play through injuries many players won't.

Keep him.

No he won't.

If push comes to shove he'll request and get his release.

That 14 mil isn't guaranteed.

As a starter for another team he would get something in that vicinity, with the bulk of that guaranteed.

Fitzpatrick got $12 mil this season. Romo is better than him. And there are several teams that need a better starting QB.

Not me. I'm taking that 7 mill this year, and i'm going and getting Mario Addison or Kawaan Short.

Jurrell Casey, Jaye Howard, Michael Bennett, and a lot of other guys are making less salary than Crawford this year, or right around it.

To each his own
