The only player I would take over Watt is Rodgers. I love Tyron, but Watt is on another level entirely.

Nope. Watt's career will be over before Tyron begins to decline. Mr. Smith hands down!

If you think this way you will never draft an impact DL man. DL takes a pounding every game. It's just the nature of their position.

If Watts give me 8-10 yrs of 20 sacks, 5-8 forced fumbles, 1-2 ints........ You had me at "Watts".

adding jj in turn makes romo less valuable to the team bc the defense automatically improves.

plus just because you draft watt doesn't mean you can't address the LT position own the road.

Why don't we examine that team he plays for right this second and the last few seasons and how much he's made the QB's job less valuable for that team.
Show me how much that team doesn't need a QB because of Watt.

And who's to say they are successful finding a good LT also? Maybe they aren't. Just as possible, maybe moreso.

Looking back on it, who would you rather have?

Would Romo's career be over had we not drafted Smith when we did by way of taking more hits and sacks?

Would JJ Watt be on the same level on our team?

I know this has been covered before, I just find it to be interesting.

Best (arguably) LT in the NFL, or best DT in the NFL?

No question Smith is a great LT but you can also be successfull with a lesser one. So the question is for me could i replace a great LT more easily thru a good one and maybe OL scheme than a great DE thru a good one ?

To me the answer is yes (OT is replaced more easily).
So for me its Watt and i'd never look back.

I know all of us would love to have somehow drafted both players but we know that would've costed a premium. Instead of arguing different scenarios, I would like to point out one detail:

This year's draft could potentially give us both a "Tyron" and "Watt" in the form of Gregory and Collins.
I'm not saying to get the anointing oil out just yet but if Gregory and Collins can play up to their potential, then we acquired two of the best players at their respective position in one year at bargain prices.
Years down the road, we'll have threads trying to argue which one of them should go in the Ring of Honor first ;)

You can't go wrong with either.. Watt and Smith are top 3 players at their position, which is why they both got $100m extensions.

Can't go wrong either way, but Smith will probably be an elite tackle for longer than JJ Watt. LTs can be solid into their mid 30s, ends generally early 30s, though both guys are beasts

I appreciate you stating such a "great analogy", as this helps my pain of not taking JJ Watt as I love watching him play......but, you bring up a GREAT point--Thank you!

Hey, remember when there used to be threads like this on Shawn Merriman vs. Demarcus Ware and how so many people thought Merriman was the better player early in their careers?
