Looking back: Was it a mistake not to go back to Romo

The Cowboys lost 34-31 in a game where Dak threw for 300 yards and 3 TDs.

Green Bay had four TD drives of 75 yards or more and Dak still managed to tie the game late...and the defense couldn't get it to overtime.

The Cowboys have never won a playoff game when the opponent scored 30 or more.

So unless Romo was going to play defense I'm not sure where this SB fantasy arises.
well look at the first 3 qtrs, with dak dallas scored 1 td and 2 fg's in 3 qtrs,13 points for a avg of 4.3 points per qtr.
Are you guys going to blame the defense for that??
Ahead 28-13 GB let up , and dallas scored 18 points in the 4th, but it was too late and then they left enough time for gb to get in fg range.
how many defenses could stop rodgers from getting into fg range with a minute to work with? Not many.

Dak and dallas did too little in the first 3 qtrs to win that game.
I think had romo started, they would have done better than the 13 points in 3 qtrs.

And if the dallas offense is going 3 and out or 6 and out, that puts a tired defense back on the field. And Rodgers probably loved that.

The Giants did play well and deserved to win... they also beat three other teams clearly better than them to win the Super Bowl. So clearly they were on a roll.
But I still think you have to chalk it up as a Cowboys choke job. The Cowboys scored 76 points in the regular season against the Giants... dialing up 17, at home, on a bye... it's just not acceptable.
  • Romo re-injured hand on the 2nd drive
  • TO hurt the whole game
  • Two monster Crayon drops for long gains or scores...and a muffed punt
  • Crayton pull up on perfectly thrown game-winner with 17 seconds to go
  • 2 special teams blunders that allowed the Giants 14 points

Just a debacle

I'm saying Romo had to make a lot of plays while running for his life, and more often than not, that's when he turned the ball over.
If he is running for his life he is outside of the pocket and can throw the ball away. This is something that you had to take the good with the bad with Romo. He didn’t like to throw the ball away and Parcells tried to hammer it into Romo to no avail. It made for some spectacular plays but also put us in bad field position and/or turned the ball over.

Well I think they had key guys injured during the early part of season, and when they played dallas and lost.
They got those guys back at end of season, which allowed them to start a win streak, and get into the playoffs.
They were a better team than their record of 9-7 indicated.
strahan sp? talked about they as a team decided to take it all the way, so could be it was that desire just wanting it more than the teams they faced.

And a Playoff RedZone interception that seems to always be overlooked.

Often true, certainly.

Dak throwing 300 yards against a battered GB secondary is seen as some feat, and it’s comical especially in light of the fact the very next year, his defenders were blaming Dez for all Dak’s flaws. Dez caught nine balls for 132 yards, 6 of them in the second half in that game. So what happened? Next year Dez was the reason Dak stunk it up, supposedly...

the Bears, Vikings and Lions all put up more passing yardage against the struggling GB secondary than the Cowboys. They gave up an average of 26 points the last three games of the season.

GB was 21st in the league in points given up and we were fifth defensively.

You ever thought maybe you shouldnt be so easy to trigger? Im enjoying this. Are you?

Oh of course, I live for this. We can keep this up for weeks.

You are trying to deflect and play it off when in fact you replied to me, acting all sensitive and being all sarcastic.

My reply to the thread got you on your period.

Corso! I'm out of here brother. I hope you have a great evening...
You too my good friend.
We're in the middle of redoing the entire kitchen. Getting a slew of cast iron cookware... a turquoise Smeg fridge (wife was unbelievably giddy when I told her and that's her fave color) and all new knives and utensils as we paint the area and install Spanish tile on the floor.

And a new backsplash!

I tell ya, I'm in a super-cooking mood and nothing has come in yet!
Well, except for the tile, paint and backsplash.

And they are only pushing back against the narrative the Romo smoking clowns have put forth in that if Romo was only allowed to come back in 2016, the Cowboys would have won the Superbowl that year. Not possibly, not maybe; they would have won it.
well I am one of those, but it would be a maybe, or just a better chance of doing it.
14,16,18 were all years dallas had a good shot at going to a sb, but alas they had clapper as HC so it did not happen.
Tony would have given dallas a better chance of doing it is 16 , but that is all, no guarantee's

I think the new HC and staff give dallas another shot at going to sb this season. With dak or without him, they have a shot.

Actually I wasn't referring to you in particular. There are much stronger Romo advocates to the 2016 QB decision over the years since. FWIW, I have no problems with the idea that Romo may have helped them beat the Packers in 2016. Personally I don't see it but it isn't in some "Fantasy Land" like the multiple SB win predictors have envisioned. But I give you credit for your response just the same.

Romo couldn't stay healthy, how this made it to 14 pages no idea. Imagine a lot of uneducated bashing on one of the most underrated players they Cowboys have had. What was overrated you ask? His teams, the star gets a lot of extra hype. Having what many claimed to be a good no 2 receiver in the league to out of the league. He made names of nobodies.

But I got to see Michael Jordan in gigantic shoulder pads in this thread!
That's gotta be worth something.

What the rule "should have been" and what it actually was are 2 separate things. First, here are all the catch rules from 2014.

So note that there are multiple sets of rules. The "main" catch rule has the parts a, b, and c. If that main rule can't be satisfied then other rules kick in that take precedence. Item 1 in red is the going to the ground rule. How do I know these take precedence? Look at Item 6. In that case, the main catch rule can't be performed so once deemed such, this rule's requirements kick in. Same for all the "Items". These are the mechanics of the rule. This is why catch theorists fight tooth and nail trying to say that the main rule applied because if it doesn't then Dez is dead in the water per Item 1. There's NO dispute about that. So after Dez high-pointed the ball, he comes to the ground in one motion. If he had "time enough" to perform an act common to the game, he would have done so instead of going to the ground with his momentum as was explained. The only thing in the rules (Approved Rulings 8.12 & 15.95) that shows you can get out of a going to the ground label is actually lunging to propel yourself forward or extend the ball out like in that video that doesn't work now (NFL Network revamped their videos). Dez did neither. It's clear to me he wanted to, but didn't execute.

These 2 clearly do not compare in the slightest when you talk about lunging OR a football move. The first player clearly does both. Dez was going to the ground the whole way while getting a foot taken out from him to prevent his attempt. Them's the breaks in this case. Even then, he just had to hold onto the ball but didn't do that either.

First of all, all three of a), b), and c) apply to Dez's catch. Nowhere in the rule does it say Item 1) "kicks in" if a), b) and c) don't apply. The whole spiel that you went through to say it takes precedence is an interpretive dance. Second of all, even if item 1) still applies to Dez let's see what the sentences imply. First sentence: "he must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground". Dez clearly does that by catching the ball, securing it and then switching the ball into only his left hand, and then attempts to reach for the goal line, with only the slightest bit of doubt in catching the ball occurring at the beginning of the catch. Second sentence: "if he loses control of the ball (meaning while going to the ground), and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, only then is the pass incomplete. If he regains control prior to it touching the ground, then it is complete. He never lost control of the ball going to the ground. He only slightly lost control of the ball because it hit the ground along with his forearm when he was trying to reach for the goal line and it popped up into his upper forearm from which he soon after possessed it.

Even according to this rule, he caught it. The only thing the reffing mafioso did was turn over a legitimate catch without a legitimate reason. There wasn't even indisputable evidence to do so. It was utter nonsense.

And those two gifs aren't even remotely comparable to the same situation. The first one he already had possession as a receiver, was never going to the ground while catching it, and is reaching for the goal line after an attempted whiff of a tackle where he has plenty of inertia in a more horizontal direction to make such a leaping jump. There is no mention of the "extent" required when it comes to a "move common to the game". They are both the same football moves, i.e., a reach for the goal line, one more limited by the velocity (speed and direction) of the particular player.

Well since we know the results of not doing so I would most definitely like to see what is behind door #2.

I don't think so. Dallas needed a new direction and most importantly Tony needed to get the hell out of the game to save his back. He probably would have played until carried off the field, if given the chance.

Now he's sitting on Scrooge McDuck money and has his health.

Romo was getting really brittle.I don't have a beef with them sticking with Dak. Daks best trait is his durability. Romo was a tough SOB, make no mistake, but they felt it risky to go back to him at that point. Tony didn't exactly seem upset about it. He knew he was on his last legs I think. Lets be honest, I don't think he love dthe game anymore in the last couple years..I don't think it was fun for him at the end. He was ready to walk away and move on to his next gig. Dak is havin fun, loves the game and is loved by everyone on the team. Not that they didn't love Romo...It was a changing of the guard.
