Luck Staying in School

I'm all for education, but I'll never understand the consensus #1 pick going back to school.

There are so many variables (injuries, regression of play, etc.) in a full season that their star may never shine brighter.

That said, perhaps he'll have another great year and be the #1 pick next year.

Can't fault him for getting a degree, but that's a lot of money on the table that could go out the window with an injury, rookie pay scale, etc. I wouldn't have that resolve myself.

This definitely shakes up the top ten which doesn't help us.

Not sure the bigger risk isn't that he declares, hires an agent then gets locked out of football for 2 months.

Being the BMOC is a hard row to how but I am sure he'll manage:)

Matt Leinart might have wished he was drafted higher but I bet after all this dust has settled he was glad he got another year on the SoCal beaches and as the BMOC at SC.

Bradford had the shoulder injury and still went #1 overall. And conversely Locker stayed in school and has cost himself like $30M dollars. If I were Luck I would go pro. It wont get much better next year it its Buffalo picking #1

Luck will get paid but if I were him Id take the extra year or two of pro money.

Watch very closely if whatever team Harbaugh signs with decides to trade this years #1 to Carolina for their #1 next year. Could be a Kosar all over again.

Edit: Granted the order is more random since then but I wouldn't rule it out.

Andrew Luck to stay in Stanford

1/6/2011 2:32:23 PM

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck has decided to stay in college to get his degree instead of immediately cashing in on the riches of being the likely No. 1 pick in the NFL draft according to the Associated Press.

Luck announced his decision Thursday, more than a week before the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft. Luck, who sat out his first year as a redshirt, has two years of eligibility remaining but is on track to graduate next spring.

''I am committed to earning my degree in architectural design from Stanford University and am on track to accomplish this at the completion of the spring quarter of 2012,'' Luck said in a statement issued through the school.

Structural engineering is not easy and I could understand why he would want continuity in his upper division work if he is sincere in saying this.

mbt4: Carolina should send Luck pictures of Buffalo in the winter, the Donner party, and Scott dying coming back from the South Pole, every day. Hands and feet after frostbite.

He's taking a VERY big chance IMO. Maybe he is counting on a lockout in 2011 and figures that he might as well stay in school another year and get his degree instead of cooling his heels somewhere while the NFL & NFLPA hash things out.

Still, the likelihood of his being the #1 overall pick in 2012 is not very good, too many things can happen between now and then. He can always get his degree but he won't always have the chance to be the #1 pick.

Thaxt would make buffalo very dangerous if they add a legitimate 1 WR this draft with Spilled at RB and Luck in 2012 that team could finally quit sucking so bad

I think that there may be several factors in this decision that could have weighed in Luck's decision. It's often more than just one or two factors that may have sweighed him.

1) As there is no current CBA, a lockout is still a definite possibilty. What would happen to a player who declares and then has no job waiting, due to the lockout?

2) The situation in Carolina is still somewhat of a mystery. No head coach and no clear plan for the team, at least at this point. The owner has been one of the guys thumpng the lock-out tub in recent weeks. Is he going to negotiate in good faith?

3) An education at Stanford is a ticket to big things beyond football. Luck seems to have his head screwed on right and he doesn't appear to be an impulsive guy.

4) If Harbaugh stays, then is a National title a realistic possibility? Maybe Stanford becomes a major player in College Football. I can think of worse places to work.

This is all speculation, but here's hoping it works out for him. It certainly impacts the draft in a big way. All the draftnicks are going out of their minds today.

Architectural design and structural engineering are two different majors. As for Luck, I wish the best for him. Never fault a man for getting his education, although when there is that much money on the table, its more than you will ever make with that degree anyway.

I got my degrees to make money, period....and not for the 'thrill' of learning. But sometimes, if you already have plenty of money and the money doesn't matter as much, its more about the prestige of having a degree from Stanford. There is nothing wrong with that, but it does really suck for us.

Getting a Stanford degree is worth staying in school. But staying in school to try to win a football game - a significant game but a football game nonetheless - is dumb. He would make tens of millions of dollars. I hope he is staying in school because he wants to get his degree.

He's going to make tens of millions of dollas anyway.

Doesn't matter if he comes out in 2011 or 2012.

You only get one shot to have a run at a National Title.

Alabama will lose a ton of guys to the NFL including their QB and #1 WR.

Florida is down. Auburn loses Cam.

I think the it would be Oregon/Stamford 1/2 early.

For Stanford to have a shot is a once every 50-75 years type of event and I'm not 100% convinced Harbaugh is leaving this year.

If Harbaugh leaves and Luck stays, does one of the Stanford coordinators get the job at Stanford?

DraftCountdown Scott Wright
Andrew Luck staying leads me to believe Harbaugh will remain at #Stanford too. If Harbaugh leaves I still think Luck could reverse course...

Disagree.

I think Carolina will suck bad and will be so dissatified with Clausen that they will have the no 1 pick next year and will pick Luck at #1!!

Its sad that some of you just cannot believe that someone chooses school over money. I feel sorry for you. Luck has said for a long time how important a degree is. You called him a liar. Well guess what: he makes some of you look like something that dropped out of a girafes rear end.

You do realize that it is possible to get a degree while playing in the NFL or even after his sports career right? He doesn't have to stay at Stanford to do that. You can always get a degree. Having a shot at the #1 pick in the draft is a 1 in a million chance though, and he's not necessarily guaranteed to get it next year like he's pretty much guaranteed this year.

And it doesn't have to be all about the money like you are saying either. Being the #1 pick is a reward and accomplishment all on it's own. The money is only the gravy on top.

A Stanford degree is not just any degree. That isn't something you can buy with money. It is one of the most prestigious schools in the nation

I am aware of that. You cannot get your PE with one and you take more classes that are basically art but they both include heavy study in materials engineering and advanced static situations.

My point still stands.

Many people would not be able to complete the program if they were to leave it for a significant period of time.
