In 2014 I think only Kuechly and Wagner were better MLB than McClain. It's just my opinion I watch a ton of football. That's where I leave that. If he wasn't great we would have never re-signed him the following season(and Jerry knew he would be suspended ) and they still signed him.

Yes we will agree to disagree here

If he was great they wouldn't have waited till the last minute to sign him to another one year deal.

Just to name a few LB's who were better in 2014 than McClain...
Von Miller
Luke Kuechley
Thomas Davis
Karlos Dansby
Bobby Wagner
Lavonte David

Players that I think would have been better had they not been hurt (seriously, there were a shocking amount of injuries to high profile linebackers in 2014)...
Derrick Johnson
Kiko Alonso
Navorro Bowman
Stephen Tulloch
Sean Lee
Danny Trevathon

Rolando McClain, when he is at his best, is probably a top-5 middle linebacker. However, you see his best such a small fraction of the time it's honestly pointless to project it. I'll never trust him until he can string seasons of high level play together. Currently, he can't even string games together where he is at that level.

Between the three, I would rather resign Hardy (probably not in play) or Mincey, both of least gives a poop about football, than sign Mario....even if Gregory isn't the clear starter next year. Lately, the coaching staff has shown exceptional skill at exacerbating the on-field motivations of FA's with a known history of the sort. Garrett and company should not be confused with Cesar Millan.

Mario Williams has never been a Demarcus Ware. He's been very solid over his career but not overly consistent. His best days are past him and with him coming off a down year you have to wonder how much he has left. With the team moving on from Hardy he would have to be looked at as an option.

No thanks...........the dude totally quit during the season, basically said he was done playing in that scheme.

His own teammates called him out for basically loafing during the games. The ball would be snapped and Mario would just come out of his stance and just stand there watching the play. Reminds me of Desean Jackson his last year in Philly, just jogged his routes and never even turned his head to look for the ball. All because he was pissed the Eagles didn't give him a new contract.

Bingo - I lived in Buffalo for awhile last year - trust me his coaches, teammates and the city all turned on him. He simply doesn't love the game, he's cashing checks. If the mantra still stands - he's definitely not a RKG. I say this knowing full well Hardy may not be either - but I would rather resign him. Although he's a wild card off the field, his effort on the field to my knowledge has never been questioned.

I did say MLB . I'll give you Luke and Wagner in 2014 no way Dansby was better that year. The rest are OLB. Bowman is a shell. He was really a top 3 MLB in 2014. Its okay if you don't like certain players. I understand we all have our own taste.

Bro what I was implying is Mario isn't coming cheap we need to fill alot of holes.

true, but signing cheapies isn't going to help. We need true impact players. I expect Jerry to go out and sign 3 impact starters on defense. Were looking at 30 million this year.

RGregory is our DWare. Expect a big jump in production.

How do you figure? Not unless he adds about 30 lbs in the off season. I said the day we drafted him he wouldn't hold up. Too skinny and abysmal against the run. Just like he was in College. Kid needs to pack on good weight and in a hurry.

Williams is going to be released soon. He's verbally stated that he isn't a fit for Rex Ryan's defense and the Bills have said they will release him.He says he will play with a chip on his shoulder next year . He is 31 years old but he is still one of the best 4-3 DE in the game. He brings a nastiness to him,he is outstanding vs the run, and he will grab double digit sacks. I would offer him 3 years 30 million dollars. It's the perfect contract because Lawrence and Gregory will both be in their prime and we won't miss a beat after he retires.

Jerry is going to spend big this offseason . He's going to grab a top CB in free agency , a DT , and possibly a safety . But this is the guy I want. Would be an excellent mentor for Gregory and Dlaw . Veteran DE's have worked before. Reggie White to GB/Haley to Dallas/ Ware to Denver . They all ended up with championships ! He'll be our Reggie white /dware with that leadership and pass rush and help bring Romo a championship.

How dare you compare him to the late, great Reggie White? ;)

I've never been impressed with Mario Williams. I don't know what it is, but I don't think he'll bring much to this team. My personal opinion.

I saw Mcclain going "balls out " he was a top 3 MLB in 2014. He is still only 26 years old and the guy can be absolutely great. He has absolutely shown glimpses of dominance. You can't have a perfect 53 guys anymore. Lots of these guys grew up in bad environments growing up etc. I've seen Dez go half speed this year and no one says anything about him. Maybe he was hurt but he was pouting crying for the football then going nuts after he was dropping passes. Vs the bucs and jets Dez may have gave those games away. Did he "quit" on the team by not playing the last game vs the Commanders ? How about Lee pulling himself off and staying inactive ? Now I'm starting to question if this entire team quit last year.

I mean I just don't see why you're calling Mario Williams a quitter . He's awfully productive for a quitter . I also consider the environment in buffalo . They haven't been to the playoffs in forever I wouldn't blame him for being pissed watching his own career going to waste while he is dominating.

Uh, no, that's not the case. Plenty of fans here have criticized Dez for going half-speed.
Heck, I criticized him because in the last minute interception, he was arguing about pass interference right when the defender was intercepting the ball. And in the Carolina game, he was arguing with Norman as Kueckly (spelling?) was returning a pick for six.

I don't know about his attitude, but I am willing to give him a pass for last year. Traditional, big 4-3 ends do not do well as OLB's a 3-4 scheme. I can imagine that is very frustrating. I do agree that locker room chemistry and win-first attitude is very important so the coaches will have to decide if his attitude will fit in locker room.

But, there is no doubt that he was very productive the three years before when Buffalo ran a traditional 4-3. His sack totals in a 4-3 were 10.5, 13.0. and 14.5. That's pretty damn good.

I know the PFF system is pretty crappy, but this PFF article has some very interesting stats about how Williams and the Bills other DE, Hughes, were able to get a lot of pressure on opposing QB's without a lot of blitzing (sound familiar?) I think DLaw has the ability to be every bit as good or better than Jerry Hughes, so this article is pretty darn intriguing. I think just dismissing Williams without really looking into it a huge mistake.

Williams, DLaw, a healthy Crawford, and the best rookie 1-tech we can get, backed by Gregory, Crawford, and Irving, may just give us the pass rush we need.

After the Super Bowl, I think DE is a position that Jerry is going to be more than willing to open the check book for.

I still think GHardy is the best fit because he can take early downs from RGregory and then slide to DT on passing downs.

Yeah, Hardy is a tremendous fit (scheme-wise) for pretty much any team.

Yea well if the Eagles get him we are in trouble . You can't say you would NOT be nervous when playing their Dline if they add him.

Williams-cox - Logan -barwin-curry- graham , Would easily give the Eagles the best DL in our division.

He isn't that good.

Demarcus Ware was an elite pass rusher from day one. He simply took his talents to a new team. Mario Williams has never been elite at anything, while struggling with nagging injuries and serious questions about his motor. He is 31 and coming off a tumultuous season.

I put Williams in the same category as Weddle--past their prime looking for their last big paycheck. These guys are going to get paid for what they've done instead of what they can do.

No thanks.

I know I stated in another post that I would take Williams, Hardy, and Ware but if I was to be totally honest I really don't want any high price FA. We have the #4 and #34 picks in the draft. Draft well continue to get younger and save cap space. I am more in favor of a coaching change vs. a big FA signing. If we could get a CB and DT that would be great.
