Martellus Bennett Struggling To Pick-up Playbook..

We need to give the guy the time through camp to see if he is stupid.
As I recall the TE's duties in his college were not all that much, so this is clearly a whole lot more complicated then anything he has seen before.
Fasano came from Weis who had a pretty big playbook so he had better prep in College.

I honestly believe besides QB, TE in Garrett's offense is pretty complicated with the motions, blocks, fake blocks and releasing, lead blocks, chip blocks, crackback blocks, blocking assignments on run plays based on defensive alignment. Not saying the kid may be a little slow but I am sure the playbook for him is probably 200% bigger than the one he had in college plus the difference in terminology.

He probably had to know like 5 plays in college, the Aggies didn't exactly use him a lot.

Now's he's on a team that uses the TE a whole lot.

Ummmmm....maybe the fact it specifically states "its time to start showing he is not overwhelmed by an NFL playbook."

But at the same time...its certainly nothing to get frustrated about. He is a rookie. I am sure it happens with 75% of them.
The only reason Tim McMahon was asking the question was because Bennett is a rookie, but it still is quite a leap to say he is struggling by that remark.

There have been a few hints elsewhere that I have heard. It should come as no surprise considering how basic the A & M playbook was, especially for TE's.

Stupid thread.
MB is evaluated by a sportswriter making guesses and you all yell BUST.
The media has control of you guys, big time.

Except no one yelled bust.

There is some concern that he is not learning as fast as needed. That is all.
Its very early yet.

But that is what you get at this time of the year- speculation based on just a few scraps of info.

Lol. Not a single person. I think he is upset BECAUSE no one did :)

Not yelling bust, but there have been several posts saying that getting him was a stupid move, or that he won't be good/contribute.

Trading a TE to draft a TE, I believe is what the reference is. Not that he's a bust or that he won't be good. It's June.

But for a different reason altogether:

Goal line jump ball ain't in the play book ya dummy:D

Can't believe this is even a topic of conversation. Talk about overreacting. Just chill out.

We've seen overreactions to Scandarik's play vs Jenkins on this board with a few already in rookie minicamp believing Jenkins was a bust & Scandarik would be the better player. But Jenkins sure looking good now.

Heard all kinds of great stuff about Amendola in rookie minicamp. But what has he done in the OTAs against the vets? Nothing so far. Yet many on this board almost guarantee him a spot on the roster.

Now we got tidbit of info that Bennett perhaps taking a little longer to learn the playbook. Wow. Surprise, surprise, surprise. How many of you remember that in the rookie minicamp there was a comment by the media that TE coach (don't remember which Garrett) was constantly in Bennett's ear. It should be obvious he's being pushed in double quick time to get up to speed maybe faster then any of the other young rookies.

Why don't we all just relax & give these young players a little time instead of kiddingly (?) calling them slow or a bust. They are rookies and there is a reason so many rookies have a difficult time in their first year but then really step it up in their 2nd year.

What is it too heavy? I know, bad joke.

But all bad jokes aside, It just might take Martellus Bennett a little longer to learn the playbook.

I'd rather take my chances with the experienced veteran Fasano than a rookie struggling with the system.
But that's just me.

I'd rather be rolling with a veteran Fasano than a rookie struggling with the system
.

Well, I think they kind of got backed into a corner with Bennet.

Hardy, obiously, was on the radar.

And I think they were crossing their fingers on Sweed.

I havent seen the war room footage. Maybe Im dead wrong on that.

Ellis is concerned with how the off-season reps are split at OLB, so we should be, too, even though Wade Phillips has assured Ellis that he'll remain the starter.

WHAAAA...!!!!!!!!

Quivering Wade Phillips has already told Ellis that????
:banghead:
Since when is a job won before camp opens???
What kind of obsequiece is this from a grown man, a HC, to an aging veteran who is more focused on microphones than on commitment to scheme, management -- even coplayers.

Wade, don't give the job to anyone before camp even opens.
That kind of stuff is basic, ya know Mr. "We're Fine."? :angryno:

Two weeks ago that was Wade told Ellis that Veterans do not need off-season reps as much as rookies. Now its Wade told Ellis his job is safe?

Ellis is not a star player. He doesn't give it his all, and he is not in it for the team. Last season he was basically protesting saying his injury isn't healing as fast, and he does not have insurance ($$$$) that if he goes and gives it his all and get injured again, he will be tossed out. Well he got insurance AND and played, hit the single season sack incentive. Good for him.

Unfortunately, he produces well, but I have a feeling if we put Spencer in there he would not miss a beat.

Sorry to hijack this thread on that damned Ellis...

Regarding Bennett, what can the guy do...Hes 2nd/3rd in line, will probably be on the inactive list all year, and if dice fall badly, he could get cut. Especially if he is struggling to pick up the playbook...that's a shame...
