They could not retain a productive running back on their roster because they knew they did not want to match what he could get on “the open market”. They opted to sign two RBs that have had more injuries than flashes of brilliance. The Eagles are hoping for decent production from them. I’m guessing they are realistic about what to expect. Imagine if they could acquire Taylor from Indy. Well, they can’t. Their cap, like lots of teams, has no room for a running back of that caliber. It comes down to doing the best with what you have or can reasonably afford to get. I suspect the RB they acquired from the Lions will have more receiving yards than rushing yards. And I’ll stand by this. Eagles win 11 games this season. If they win 10 their coach is on the hot seat. They win nine and miss the playoffs, he’s gone. I think he is peculiar. Cowboys will win 11 or 12. The NFCE is the strongest division, top to bottom, in the NFL, again.
Or…… the Eagles simply don’t believe in putting resources into the TB position. In fact, the GM said that before. So no, they probably wouldn’t want Taylor.

I'm with ya Flamma. To call that just business, that's like when a cat leaves his calling card in the litter box and attempts to cover the evidence with sand. He's just taking care of business. But it still stinks.
Sometimes I think the players lose perspective on why the fans watch the game. I can see if you're a rookie 4th round pick and didn't make much. Now you want a nice piece. Ok, go for it if you deserve it. But a guy already stupid rich, and all he can think about is more gold coins? I mean damn, people are going to be looking at you like you took 3 platefuls at the buffet.

Or we could look at the owner who is drawing a line in the sand on one of his best players and then trying to turn the fans against him with his BS commentary about needing the money to pay other players and that big bad Zack would be taking money away from Lamb and Parsons.

Those are two enormous contracts coming up. I'm not suggesting Jerry can't work around it, because we pretty much know he planned to do so after this season. But to be asking for more money in his current contract is a bit unexpected.

I have no problem giving him an extension a year early. My concern is that he wants more money in the last two years of his contract. Not just an extension.

He has a massive cap hit next year. There are reports the Cowboys are even talking extension with Prescott now to lower his 2024 cap hit. Well Martin has a really high cap hit for an OG next year.

So why not figure out something now instead of waiting until next year while pissing off one of your franchise's best players in their history? This is classic Jerry ego at work right here. He doesn't like to be forced to do anything even if in the end, the analysis says it makes sense.

I'm not sure we're on the same page, while we might be on the same page. I have no problem giving him an extension a year early. What I think he wants is to be paid like a top OL this year and the next. Plus the extension. I would not give in to that. If it's just the extension he wants, fine.

Why? NFL teams don't honor contracts. They cut players all of the time and don't pay them the last year of their supposed contracts
Yeah, that really sucks that guys get to be rich and famous for playing their favorite game in a purely voluntary fashion, but sometimes they don't get to be quite as rich and famous as they want to be.

Sucks to be them.

(this was sarcasm for those with a broken detector)

Yes, well, if the game is “business” Martin and his agent have locked horns with the wrong businessman. Martin might end up in the Hall of Fame, Jerry Jones already is.
I've seen no indication based on past deals for the Cowboys that great players don't eventually get what they want. Dallas is good about paying market value or even above market value at times, which makes most of the debating here about money kind of silly. The team is essentially doing the same thing all of the other teams are doing, but either we ding the Joneses for caving or the players for being too greedy.

His base is low because they converted it to a bonus in March and gave him the money all up front. But either way, $50k per day adds up.
Good. I hope they trade him. These guys have ZERO IDEA what it’s like to worry about paying bills and buying groceries paycheck to paycheck.

I'd trade him to the Cardinals. Let him enjoy his money in the desert.

And then you'll replace him with someone else who only cares about the money and isn't as good. That is today's NFL. Trade Martin and he'd probably be like Ware. Win a title. Probably the best thing Jerry could do for him.

I’d agree that’s a prudent strategy. We’ll see how it works out for them. But every team would love to have Jonathan Taylor, if they could afford him.

Not at the price he's asking, even if they had cap space. The league simply doesnt' value TBs like that.

the clubs always wipe out the "late fees" once the contract is inked...
