Wrong. I'm not like you. You dont know me so you cant say i am as classless as you would be in victory. I believe in sportsmanship and respect. I dont believe that because you can do something then its morally ok to do it.
I dont take things from people because they lack the ability to stop me. I believe there is a place in professional sports for mercy. I dont see the need or value in embarrassing anyone. You do.
We shall agree to disagree on this.

We got our butts handed to us. We all agree. But the vikings showed they lack sportsmanship with that play.

now you are bringing real life into professional sports. i would never take something from someone, just cause i could. i would never kill just cause i could.

but if i am playing u in monopoly, i will do everything i can to take all the properties and leave you completely broke. if we are playing dominoes, i will do my best to beat you 250-0. if we are playing risk, i will do my best to take over the world and obliterate your armies...........and i am not even getting paid to do it.

now remember, I am talking about professional sports...cause this is their job. they are getting paid, and paid handsomely. do you think Pepsi takes it easy when competing with CocaCola? NO. Do you think AT&T and Verizon take it easy when competing with one another? NO. They do all they can to put the other out of business and sell their products to the masses....that is the way it is.

So if you are getting paid to score points and win games....you do it as well as you can.

If we are discussing amateur sports....then I am not a fan of running up the score. Amateur sports are usually extracurricular activities that are done for fun and for something constructive to do. They are not your job or your first priority, unless you are training for the Olympics of course.

But even in HS or college football, I have no issue with a team scoring as much as they can, as long as they use their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th string guys late in the game. I see no problem with some 4th or 5th string RB scoring a late TD, since he almost never sees the field, but works just as hard in practice. For him, that one TD is everything, for the opponent, it is just 6 more points of deficite in a beatdown.

that's not at issue here

we're talking about running up the score when there was no doubt as to the game's outcome

Do you watch basketball? How about baseball? So if they are up 20 pts or so/many runs they are suppose to stop playing the game? Why does it have to apply to football??

It doesn't have to. But it does. That's the whole point that people aren't getting. What we consider unsportsmanlike is just like what people consider rude -- it's entirely situational. It changes through time and space. But -- here's the kicker -- just because it's not absolute doesn't mean you shouldn't obey these informal rules. They're there for a reason. Does it make any sense at all that picking your rice bowl up while you eat is totally okay in Japan and very rude in China? Does it make any sense at all that *traditionally* running up the score is not okay in football but fine in, say, baseball? No. But it doesn't matter.

Rules change all the time and this one may as well. We could ditch every one of these rules in whatever sport you want. For all we know, a hundred years from now it will be considered okay to spit on your opponents at every opportunity and people will wonder why we were so uptight. I for one, though, would like to hang on to it a little bit longer.

It was payback for the 90's.

After watching the Stealers make Favre look very pedestrian I thought for sure we would too.

The two positions on this debate summed up:

1) You should show class and respect for the game and the athletes on the field

2) I'm a man! Real men never let up! Are you questioning my manhood? Look how big my balls are, ******! I'm not gay! I'm a man!

I would say:

1) Please I am horrible, don't make me look bad. If you do im going to whine like a bad loser

2) Im a man/woman that thinks that showing mercy is disrespectful and not the other way around

Sounds like you were raised on Madden.

i cant stand Madden, the only one I cared for was Madden 92, the original. But thank you for once again being judgemental, and you call me classless.

Lets just change the rules and the first team scoring a TD wins the game, that way the difference wont be too big to be "embarrassed".
Its not lack of sportsmanship, its just being a bad loser. If you are mad about it, keep it for yourself and try to embarrass them even more the next time you play against them.
And yes, i have played organized sports my whole life and i was never taught to show mercy, i was taught that showing mercy was disrespecting the other team.

Interesting philosophy you have been taught...

We've should have dropped more A-Bombs on Japan... ;)

I dont care if it was the statue of liberty, a flea flicker, a double reverse, or the annexation of puerto rico. the fact is, if dallas didnt want to be scored on, they should have stopped minnesota from scoring.

if it were the other way around, you wouldnt be so angry. you would be so happy that the Boys rubbed Favre and the Vikings noses in it.

Stop playing the "judgemental" card when you're doing it yourself...

Yes I have. You play sports to win, not have mercy.

Now you are just lying to support your argument. And they had already won. So they satisfied your definition of why they played the game. Whats so weak or wrong with showing class in addition to winning?
