"Martyball" and the passage of time

Marty was a good coach who should have won at least one Super Bowl. He's the only coach to have worse luck than Landry, pre-SB6.

“Defense wins championships, but discipline builds dynasties.”

“I’ve seen champions crumble and underdogs rise—never underestimate anyone.”

“An excellent team thinks as one, acts as one.”

“Champions are built in the off-season.”

“Great players rise in the moments that matter most.”

Marty is one of only eight NFL HCs to win 200 games. Five of the other seven are in the Hall of Fame. The other two are Bill Belichick and Andy Reid.

Brian comes from good stock, we'll see what he can do with it.

We shall see. Aaron Glenn is about the same age, just got his first HC gig. What's the difference?
Less than half as many years coaching before becoming a head coach and less than half as many employers. He didn’t become a coach on the coattails of his father’s career.

Similarities…the owner of the team he works for is almost as inept as the owner of the team Schottenheimer works for.

I noticed a lot of my fellow Zoners gleefully talking about how many of our problems will be solved because we have "Martyball" now. As someone who was around during "Martyball"it's interesting because back then Marty came to be known as basically a simpleton who was famous for soul crushing losses and who couldn't get over the top, e.g., he's the only coach in NFL history with 200 wins but a losing playoff record (and his playoff record STUNK). He was also on the losing end of iconic playoff losses, e.g., "The Drive", "The Fumble."
I'm curious what it is about Martyball that has people excited? Let me know Zoners.
That was not the consensus view of Marty.

Woody is certainly more inept than Jerry

And in a few years, he will be the only 1 not in the HOF and that won't won't be changing anytime.

My bad on the year.

Apparently my bad on the situation as well. I guess nearly half the 4th quarter was left to play, so it makes more sense that he didn't go down. NE still had time.

Both QBs were awful in that game.
If they do hang on I believe Chargersgo all the way though. They matched up extremely well vs Indianapolis and I doubt that team loses to Rex Grossman.

If Brian succeeds, who cares. What's it matter? Can we just give him a chance?

What if Glenn flames out in 2 years? Will that be talked about too or will he get a pass? Brian isn't the flavor of the day, I get it, but what tells you or anyone else what makes one better than the other? Great thing is this, we get to find out. Let the games get played.

Very true. In fact, looking at the list of HCs with most NFL wins, eight of the top nine will be HOFers within a few years.

Then again, Marty is the only one never to win a championship.

In Marty's 21 years as an NFL HC, he had 15 winning seasons, 4 tie seasons and 2 losing seasons.

However, his playoff record was 5-13. He took Cleveland to the AFC championship twice and took Kansas City once. Two were very close, but he lost. John Elway broke his heart a few times.

Ironically, his best season was his last. He coached the Chargers to a 14-2 record in 2007 only to lose in the divisional round to Tom Brady and the Patriots.

I remember Bum Phillips Wades pappy banging on the Steelers door year after year but never quite kicking the door in …. Marty was kind of like that I guess .

I’m just glad to be moving on from the McCarthy era .

He’s head coach of the New York Jets. I don’t like his chances.

He was considered a top head coach in the league from the late 80s through the late 90s. Anything else is historical revisionism.
That wasn't what I quoted. I quoted "Marty was a great coach!" which he never was.

Good coach, above average head coach, top head coach, whatever. Great head coach? No. Not with a playoff record of 5-13 and no Lombardi's.

He did bring them to their first AFC championship appearance. But prior to him, they did win two AFL championships, and an AFL VS NFL game prior to the league's merging.
I'm aware. The point is, they were a laughing stock for 15 years until Schottenheimer got there.

The problem was, he always had good players at almost every position. Just few great ones. He had some nice teams though. Good enough that I remember.
What was the name of that DE they had who was awesome and he died years ago?
