I was not against that idea either. Jones is interesting to me if he is a bargin. The guy is still 6-6 235 lbs and he still runs fast. Hard to say if he is just not any good or not good enough to break the lineup in Jax. They have a lot of WRs there. Two years ago, he caught 41 catches. He's a hard cover because he's so tall and gets on you quick. I don't know how well he's progressed since being in Jax but honestly, look how many WRs they have, all very highly ranked. How many have been good? Might be more about the team and the coaching then the players. I don't know.

Hey, for a 6th this year, he'd be worth the risk, considering Parcells motto of(and i paraphrase) "at some point someone thought of him as a #1 talent"

Well, I agree Dakota. For that price, he would be worth a look. We would not draft anybody better with that pick then Jones. However, who knows what they would want. Doesn't matter. If we did that, this place would explode. members would be breaking out the pitch forks and feathers.

OK, gotta get up in the AM. Catch up with you later Dakota.

Have a good evening.

IMO we have 3 with Hurd, Austin and Stanback. To me Matt Jones would do for us what Crayton already does. Not a "WoW" player and if you're going out and getting a cruddy Troy Williamson that's kind of an indictment on Jones IMO, especially considering he was a #1 pick a couple years ago.

Actually Troy starting to flash some signs of being what they hoped for. He runs ok routes, provides a deep ball threat and stretches the field big time, and can get separation. His problem is he is too inconsistent catching the ball. At times he makes TO look like Mr. Hands. If he continues to improve he will be the threat MN hoped he would be.

Jones would provide something we don't have. He's got real size and speed. He just hasn't gotten it yet. Not surprising since he hasn't been a WR very long.

Both guys are decent risks to take providing they don't or didn't cost too much.

But Jones is really not an answer for Dallas' needs. Still too many questions.

I'm not against getting him. Sometimes he shows that he can be a player.

To me, he's miscast as a WR. He's more along the lines of the 6'4" 235lb Jay Novacek and should be playing TE matched up against LBs.

maybe. He is a really big guy. Kinda reminds me of shockey. Not character wise but he was split out like a WR alot.

That's a good idea. I don't think he's learned to use his body yet, but I haven't followed him. What has been his problem?

Not a Florio fan AT ALL, but here's what he has to say.

Matt Jones
Date of Birth:
April 22, 1983
Age:
25 Height:
6-6
Weight:
238

Matt Jones, WR, Jaguars: Three years ago, Jones created a huge buzz in the days leading up to the draft. Chris Mortensen of ESPN sang Jones' praises, predicting he'd qualify for more Pro Bowls than pretty much any of the rest of the skill-position players taken in Round 1. But in his third year -- the one in which receivers are supposed to break out -- Jones had a career low in catches (24) and yards (317). Although he still has the physical tools to remain in the NFL for several more years, the reality is that Jones, by all appearances, doesn't care. And if he doesn't care, he should quit. There are too many guys with less natural ability, but loads more desire and heart. Mike Florio writes and edits ProFootballTalk.com and is a frequent contributor to Sporting News.

I wouldnt mind seeing him here for a very late round pick. The guy is still huge and very, very fast. Get him together with a good recievers coach and good offensive coordinator and he might just make something of himself. We have both of those.

I seem to remember him giving us fits in a game against Jacksonville a coupla years ago. Anyone else remember this or am I misremembering?

I think TE is a difficult position to play. Let's not forget Matt is a convereted QB, the idea of being manhandled by DB's was too much for him, how's he gonna feel getting hit in the mouth by LB's on every play?

Thanks. I find it difficult to believe he doesn't care. But he has had a very, very laid back personality long ago. If people see that as not caring then I understand it but I don't buy it. His coaches admit he's a little different but that he was very competitive and a quiet leader.

My guess and its an assumption is that his personality didn't change and he just hasn't had the time to make the change. I do agree that three years is about all you get. If he had less physical talent he would probably be looking at selling shoes. But he'll get more time. Maybe someone who understands him and can work with people with "different" personalities, he can become the kind of player many envisioned.

Isn't our WR coach known for dealing well with those types of personalities?

I believe he's worth our second round pick... But he's has not shown he's worth a first round at all.... But I like his size along with speed. He has potential to be great, but again not worth a first round draft pick....

A second would be way too high for him, are you serious?

I wouldn't even give a 5th for him.

COOL

He can lineup next to Simeon Rice on our imaginary trade rumor team of draft week.

This is one of the stranger trade rumors I've heard. I can't see him as a good compliment to T.O. though. It would be interesting pick up project for some team , maybe get Big Ben that tall receiver he wanted. A sixth seems like very little for few years removed first . Not a fan of picking receivers in the first.

Well, Matt has always had the look of being laid back and not caring. Maybe he did get a bit more lazy with a big payday, who knows.

He has also always been faster than he is quick, and it affected him in running routes dramatically. Someone really needs to teach him how to use his body in running routes. I wouldn't mind picking him up for cheap, he has alot of upside, just needs alot of work still.

From an NBC sports article on 5 possible trades for the draft. Sorry if repost and hope I'm not violating any rules. Not new on site but fairly new as a poster:

4. Matt Jones to the Cowboys
Jones' name has not been mentioned as a trade candidate lately, although reports in January indicated that most offensive staffers wanted to dump him. Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio has defended Jones in the past, but the team has sufficient depth after acquiring Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson to make a deal.
Dallas owner Jerry Jones wants to add some “Wow” to his offense, so look for the Cowboys to get in the mix for Roy Williams. If that doesn’t work, Matt Jones is a nice fallback plan. He has flashed big-play ability as a pro, but isn’t consistent. Jerry Jones can try to rehabilitate one of his treasured Arkansas Razorbacks in exchange for a mid-to-late round draft pick.

yeah thats a "wow" move alright

"wow, that really sux"

he's a massive bust
