Crayton has proven to be an average starter

btw, I said "capable"

How do we know who's 'capable' of what at this point?

Roy Williams was 'capable' of catching 19 passes last season with a YPC of 10.4.

Crayton was 'capable' of catching just 39 passes, and he sure didn't have to worry about Roy Williams stealing his catches, did he?

And the only thing the other three candidates have shown is being 'capable' of being injured on a regular basis.

but no character concerns

Sensabaugh has those same 'character concerns' yet they signed him. Why? Because he was a capable young player with the potential to help this team in an area of weakness.

didn't develop Romo's trust, which Matt Jones will have to attempt to do, and he was possibly lazy, which Matt Jones has a history of

Matt has to juggle that with learning a new playbook

Matt Jones had a history of being lazy - until last season's wake-up call. He then stepped up and became his team's #1 receiver.

If the team signs him now, Jones will have the remainder of OTA's, mini-camps, training camp and preseason to learn the playbook and develop Romo's trust. The best time to do that.

no shame here

i hope we bring him in. the guy has not been a locker room problem and if he comes in and plays hard im all for it. this guy could be of great help to team.

It depends on what you consider a problem. The book on him is that he's immensely talented but hard to motivate. In other words, he's lazy.

The good thing is we have both Campo and DeCamillis who were both on the Jaguars staff and should have a first-hand knowledge of what he's really like.

I am sure we also signed Sensabaugh because of Campo's insight into what makes him tick. The same applies to Jones. If he ends up being signed, it won't be the result of not knowing about him.

Very good point. So with JJones' connections in Arkansas, in addition to the Jaguar coaching connections mentioned, JJ should have a clear understanding of who he would get in signing Matt Jones. So we will see what happens.

I still see the Jets, Chicago, and possibly the Vikings trying to jump in the mix though since they have their own wr issues.

I just think the odds of Dallas getting Matt Jones is slim. I'm not basing this solely on the media but I don't think the Cowboys are interested in distraction and have been in the process of eliminating distractions. If Dallas was looking for a short cut at WR I think they would have made a move in FA with a player with less baggage than Matt Jones. I also think the club feels these current players can do the job.

Again, you may very well be right and we may be talking about a 'non-issue'.

I just think it's a smart move where reward far outweighs risk.

But I have been wrong before and I thought the Pacman deal made sense.

But who knew the guy couldn't play?

And with the proper 'spin', I think Jones' story could be turned into a positive rather than a negative.

Giving a young man who made a mistake a chance at redemption. Again, I don't see Jones as a multiple offender with a bad attitude or as a locker room lawyer who would be a poor influence.

You might get a guy with less baggage, but you'd certainly be getting a guy with less talent too.

He was lazy.

Until last season.

Good point about Campo and DeCamillis, Coach 'D' should have very good insight into what type of player Jones was last season.

Well said.

I don't see either of the two players as 'bad apples'.

Crayton's numbers have stayed consistent, at least his ypc, no reason to believe he can't continue them

you forget that Crayton has been in the NFL only 1 year longer than Matt Jones, and is too still growing as a WR as he too had to make the QB-to-WR conversion switch

Roy Williams is unquestionably the better player, no matter how bad he was with us

he sure did have to worry about Witten and TO stealing them, and this was last year where Romo seemed incapable of spreading the ball around like in past years, instead zoning in on Witten or TO 1st

because the team had noone that they liked at SS

noone

but they like alot of the receivers that they have on the roster already

who's to say that he won't revert to being lazy? or better yet, won't revert to getting arrested again?

while Romo and Roy Williams are making it a point to develop a repoire? that's going to be tough sledding

Matt Jones could be a bad apple...we don't know beyond the information we read. But I would hope DeCamillis and Campo could give enough information to Jerry Jones so he makes the right choice.

No, he won't.

But unlike the vast majority of what we currently have, Jones has shown that he's capable of doing it.

I think even you would agree that the guy had his best season as a pro by far and finally started to look like an NFL receiver.

Jones showed he's capable of 65 catches and 2 TDs cause of last year. Ok, I get that. I feel that.

But if you're going to play the "capable of" card for what he did elsewhere then Roy Williams has proven he's "capable" of putting 80+ catches and 1300 yards with 7-8 TDs on the field during a season.

I like you say Jones is the only one that's shown he's capable of 65 catches, on another team, but then completely ignore that Roy has had better than Jones, pretty much every season, while he was in Detriot and only say "Well Roy only caught 19 here."

I feel you on the capable of thing but if you're going to do that then you have to reconize the fact that Roy has already proven he can produce even more in a season as the #1 option.

The only rub with Matt Jones is the lazy streak. I don't care what kind of "character" issues a player has. I am more concerned about football character than I am about off the field issues. It is a risk you take with any player who has a documented history.

Some of best team players (i.e. Irvin) were complete goons off the field. But on Sundays, they poured their hearts out. I don't think you can ask for more than that. It is up to us to determine what category Matt Jones is. You cannot paint with a broadbrush and label someone a "character issue" and dump them, especially if they are talented. It is a slippery slope that every coach has to weigh. Take Abram Elam. He was considered a rapist. You have to evaluate each case individually and make the tough choice.

Not everyone can be Captain America unfortunately. But if you use broad definitions about who a player is, then you could miss (like we did with Moss).

To me, the environment also dictates who you get. If you have a strong coach who has the command of the locker room, like say Jimmy Johnson, who can manage the personalities, go for it. I am not sure we have the right environment to handle players with baggage, not with Phillips around and virtually powerless because Jerry Jones carries the rod. We have lots of counseling support (Calvin Hill), but it hasn't really paid off.

Personally, I think Jones' issues stemmed from being immature.

At first, he didn't realize how hard he would have to work to make the conversion form college quarterback to NFL receiver, and that, along with being in Jacksonville slowed his development as a receiver.

Then, he followed it up with making the mistake with drugs, taking his proession for granted and almost losing his career.

But those events seemed to be a wake-up call to take his job more seriously and to work to become a better player.

And he did go from being a soon-to-be-cut 'bust' to being his team's #1 receiver, despite the multiple additions the Jaguars made.

I think he's turned the corner and is ready to be a starting-caliber NFL receiver.

And the guy just turned 26 years old.

To me, adding up his physical skills, with what he's recently shown, add in his obvious motivating factors and the low cost, and I think the move makes great sense for this team.

aren't those the lyrics to the song we heard when we traded for PacMan?

I'm not trying to downplay Roy Williams' accomplishments. Actually I was a big proponent of the trade and found it inexplicable that he would have such low production here.

I certainly feel that Williams is the team's better #1 option.

That said, he's shown a track record of being inconsistant and also of being injured.

That's why I'd like to take out this 'insurance policy'.

That way, if Williams, or any of the other oft-injured candidates do get hurt, the team has a capable fall-back option.

*Nods* Now that I can totally understand and see why you'd be going for this move. Personally I still don't know that I'd take a chance on Jones but I've been wrong on players before.

Again, I think he shed the label as 'lazy' last season.

He stepped-up from being a sure-cut 'bust' to being Jacksonville's #1 receiver.

His off-field mistake became the on-field wake-up call that he needed.

And the Cowboys needn't worry about Jones screwing up again.

If he does, he's gone.

They know it, he knows it, and you and I know it.

There's no grey area there at all.

He so much as looks at someone the wrong way and his career is over.

And the Cowboys are no worse off than they are today.
