Wow. Come on man. Mazi Smith is a 22 year old rookie who has played 2 pre-season games. Geez. Most rookies- even some first rounders- don’t just show up an all pro.

There are usually only a few rookies who are immediate plug and play guys in this league. I would give this guy at least a year before throwing out the bust word. He’s had some good practices but he definitely needs some developmental growth.

The NFL is a lot tougher competition than the Big 10. New NFL players have to be developed. That involves coaching, learning and patience.

There sure are a lot of stupid posters in here. It's ridiculous.
I agree with Bobhaze…not you. You claim you know he would’ve been drafted in the 1st even if Dallas didn’t take him. You simply don’t know that.

BH is right saying you need to give a guy like Mazi a year. Just spare me your knowledge of alternative realities lol

You better pinch yourself, this club is in deep trouble because it has no depths at key positions. The top two Michigan picks would be cut on other teams and to top it off our 3 rd pick who looks very promising is staring surgery straight in the eye. Top 3 my ***............LOL!
We are screwed as usual….2023 draft big disappointment. It will set us back 5 years. We are going nowhere fast.

After watching NOBODIES have their way against the Cowboys top pick who was expected to be our savior against the run, YES this dude is a bust. I can't wait to watch this slug go against the studs in this league, this dude is in real trouble. Our top two picks, both from Michigan are a joke and are dam lucky the Cowboys drafted them because if they played for anybody else, they'd both be late rd draft picks in danger of being cut before the start of the season. Our GM should have learned his lesson about drafting Michigan players when he failed miserably by drafting Taco back in 2017.
Right on brother

We talking about a 1tech DT.

Jordan Davis was hyped last year and then sort of went back to earth during the season. Probably the same with Mazi. As long as he can clog the lanes/eat two blockers that’s all we need his rookie year.

He cannot translate his strength in the weight room into play on the field…at least yet. The disturbing part is he never did at UM either. He is getting pushed around like a JAG right now. We expect more from a first round pick but hopefully the coaches can realize his potential but it’s gonna be a 2-3 year project for sure.
Which is why we should drafted someone like this 2-3 years ago.
2-3 years projects=failure. We cannot have this. We are lousy as it stands and now wait 3 years. OMG people. Is it going to be another 30 years??

Strength to occupy 2 blockers which frees up the backers to make the tackle

What gives me hope? He’s a 22 year old rookie. We haven’t even started the regular season. Most young players take time. I’ve been watching NFL football a long time and I know some guys take more than training camp to develop.

He looks like a guy whose head is swimming. You do not have time to think inside. He's been slow off the ball and unsure in his technique and it has led to problems.

That being said, when he does know what he is doing he has shown he can blow people up and get off blocks.

He is a rookie and he is inconsistent. This should not be surprising as he was pretty much a read and react 80s Parcells style 2 gapper at Michigan and now he is being moved from 1 to 4i and being asked to do that plus come off the ball and play on a shoulder. His recognition needs to develop.

He is a rookie and inconsistency is to be expected. This is not cornerback where he can be a step late and use makeup speed. By that time for a DT it is too late. He does need to work on his technique to recover which again he did not have to do much at Michigan.

This is pretty common for DL in general and I would expect more from fans but there are the same fans that are telling me that the Eagles DT are otherworldly yet when I watch them play the Browns those two were stuck on single blocking with no push.
