It’s still early and the book has yet to be written on Mazi and although he’s been a bust so far, it doesn’t mean he’ll end up a bust. However, if we don’t start seeing some significant improvement as the season goes on, he may end up being one those players the Cowboys move on from at the end of his contract. As for Chad Hennings, the Cowboys drafted him in 1988, but he had to fulfill his military obligation. He didn’t arrive in Dallas until 1992, so it was going to take time with him being away from football for several years. I never expected him to hit the ground running, but he showed something early on and continued to improve year after year. He ended up playing nine seasons for the Cowboys. This is an excellent post KJJ.
But…when I say we should be patient I’m not saying there’s nothing to worry about. I just believe many NFL players have a learning curve that can take more than TC and PS. Mazi is going to need more than 6 weeks to cook.
Here’s an example of a Cowboy you will probably remember that was not an immediate hit. But after some seasoning he was a very good player later- DL Chad Hennings. Granted CH was a late round pick when he was drafted in ‘92, but it took him a couple of years to develop into a a really good player. He was a significant starter by ‘94 and ‘95.
I‘m not saying Mazi will take 2 years. And I don’t know if he will end up being what we hoped. I really don’t know. But I do believe it’s premature to declare a 22 year old rookie a bust in August.
