This is an excellent post KJJ.

But…when I say we should be patient I’m not saying there’s nothing to worry about. I just believe many NFL players have a learning curve that can take more than TC and PS. Mazi is going to need more than 6 weeks to cook.

Here’s an example of a Cowboy you will probably remember that was not an immediate hit. But after some seasoning he was a very good player later- DL Chad Hennings. Granted CH was a late round pick when he was drafted in ‘92, but it took him a couple of years to develop into a a really good player. He was a significant starter by ‘94 and ‘95.

I‘m not saying Mazi will take 2 years. And I don’t know if he will end up being what we hoped. I really don’t know. But I do believe it’s premature to declare a 22 year old rookie a bust in August.
It’s still early and the book has yet to be written on Mazi and although he’s been a bust so far, it doesn’t mean he’ll end up a bust. However, if we don’t start seeing some significant improvement as the season goes on, he may end up being one those players the Cowboys move on from at the end of his contract. As for Chad Hennings, the Cowboys drafted him in 1988, but he had to fulfill his military obligation. He didn’t arrive in Dallas until 1992, so it was going to take time with him being away from football for several years. I never expected him to hit the ground running, but he showed something early on and continued to improve year after year. He ended up playing nine seasons for the Cowboys.

Mazi has in my opinion looked awful in both preseason games. For all the touting his size, strength, and so on just dont see it here. He is pushed around willy nilly on the line and dont believe this is befitting a first round draft pick. I am predicting a bust of Taco proportions here. Just one of the worst pics in Cowboys history. And now with the possibility of Overshown being gone for the season a disastrous 2023 draft. We cannot get to the next level with misses like these and that has been the history in Dallas.
Fools like this were the ones making posts about Jalen Tolbert being a bust last year. How about some patience chap?

This is what happens when you don't have a real GM running the club. Our GM took two Michigan players with our top two draft picks and they both stink!
We are a top 5 drafting team compared to the rest of the league and have been for a decade. Stop embarrassing yourself

I agree with Bobhaze…not you. You claim you know he would’ve been drafted in the 1st even if Dallas didn’t take him. You simply don’t know that.

BH is right saying you need to give a guy like Mazi a year. Just spare me your knowledge of alternative realities lol
Kansas City tried to trade up with Dallas to draft Mazi.

Edit: someone beat me too it.

I don't know if he's one of the biggest busts in history but reality is, seeing your first round pick not hit the ground running and instead look like a long term development project is disappointing. Teams count on their first rounders making some impact. The Cowboys ignored FA at DT because they were banking on Smith making an impact.

It's just disappointing at this point. Now hopefully with more game reps he gets better. But right now, he looks sluggish off the line, seems easily pushed around, etc.
I think that’s why we are all freaking out.

Also, I think Bohanna is out playing him.

Which is too bad, because Bohanna likely loses his job.

The Cowboys should have done what they’ve been doing for years and ignore the 3 tech DT and continue to get torched by opposing RBs up the middle…

Mazi's strength and push look fine.. stay with me here and this is the big point... He has to work on his technique.. I know its a shocker that a rookie needs to know more than "See ball get ball" when he comes into the NFL but amazingly enough the diference between NCAA blocking schemes and NFL's is huge. How many NCAA OG/C combo's do you think are around that have the talent to reach block Mazi? Kid's gonna be fine now he is learning how to read the tells of whats comming at him in the NFL.

Exactly, and it can take a NT time to develop. I think everyone will be happy to have him by the end of the season. But one thing everyone is going to have to remember is that he's not going to get a lot of sacks. He's a NT. His job is to clog the middle and make sure the RB has as little room to run up the middle as possible.

Why would you draft a developmental player with your #1 pick when there were at least a half dozen probable starters sitting there especially on the OL. Doesn't make sense to me. They do this every couple years, picks like Taco. Guys that have "potential" with the #1 pick. Very lame. I hope he gets better obviously but I am a little worried. Doesn't look like a #1 talent.
I think you hit it right, it's a potential pick, but if they hit they come out looking very good.

He hasn't looked as bad as some are leading on. I see more positive then negative.

Please tell me which starter on the OL was there.

It's early, but I am getting Taco vibes. Taco was pretty much dead on arrival, and never looked like he belonged in the pros. For Mazi, the question is does he just need time to go up the learning curve, or is he DOA too.
I watched a bit of the 49ers game yesterday & they were saying Taco is on their team. Unfortunately the reason they brought him up is that he's on IR for the season. I didn't catch why he was on IR.

As far as Mazi goes, I'm sure they picked him to help the run defense. He might have been a known reach, but they felt the need was worth taking the risk. I don't think we'll have to wait years for him to show up, but I also don't expect him to be an instant difference maker.

I know you are catching flak here, but I agree. I don't know if "awful" is the right word, but I haven't seen the combination of strength and quickness he is supposed to have.

I know some are saying he's a rookie, and DT's have to develop, and I don't disagree ...

... but I'm not looking for a completed product, or for him to dominate the line of scrimmage. I'm just looking for the basic skill set he is supposed to have. So far I haven't seen it. He seems slow off the ball & he gets pushed around at times.
