Please tell us what a "first-round DT" should look Mr. Expert......... especially before his first regular season game.
Bare minimum not blown off the line. He was being touted as an incredible strength guy. Im not seeing it. Pulling beer trucks yes, football no.

Seattle has a good offensive line and Mazi did play against their starters. He will be fine in the starting defense.
He looked better against the starters than he did the 3rd stringers, not saying much either way. Looked pretty bad overall. Pushed off the ball a lot, moved slow, does not anticipate the snap. Lots to work on for that guy.

Omg dude. Turn on your tv. And watch him in the first few series. Blown off and pushed around. He was touted as the strongest guy on the planet and they keep saying this, but Im not seeing this translate to holding his position or going forward with any penetration. Not seeing it on any plays.
I did and the diference is I know what I'm looking for and you don't. Again he is not in the NCAA anymore where blowing the guy in front of you up is all that happens, the NFL uses schemes that set up DT's for "opening" thier hips to be moved out of the hole with good C/OG doubles... Mazi saw very little of this if at all in College... much less 2 OL's that could actually move him.

Either that, or he doesn't understand how DTs develop.
You cant be serious? NO matter what you think, all first round DT's dont look THAT bad. This guy may develop, but first look is not a good one.

You can acknowledge the guy looks terrible and still have hope for him.

Not exactly a great argument for any type of justification of the Cowboys using their first rounder on him. Makes it look like a worse decision actually.

There are now more Mazi Smith threads than Dak Prescott threads....
How refreshing.............
.
Would anyone mind if I morphed this thread into Dak thread?

No not really pretty normal for DT's comming into the NFL. Usually its size AND technique, Mazi just needs to learn what is comming at him in these blocking schemes.

That is basically what I've been saying. I have zero expectations of Mazi in year one.

Mazi's strength and push look fine.. stay with me here and this is the big point... He has to work on his technique.. I know its a shocker that a rookie needs to know more than "See ball get ball" when he comes into the NFL but amazingly enough the diference between NCAA blocking schemes and NFL's is huge. How many NCAA OG/C combo's do you think are around that have the talent to reach block Mazi? Kid's gonna be fine now he is learning how to read the tells of whats comming at him in the NFL.
There is no way you can be as confident in that as you were prior to watching him in preseason.

And these 2nd and 3rd stringers in preseason you think these are grizzled NFL vets? Most are just as raw.

Then you have a low bar. NO matter what, great players show talent. And first round picks typically show more than Mazi is showing.

I still have hopes for the kid, but they have taken a big hit. And as far as this year? He would have to turn it around quickly.

He's so slow off the ball that he doesn't have a chance. I mean it could change if he starts anticipating the snap but so far. YUCK!!
And he even lines up deeper then the other guys on the line. Its like he is waiting for the double team to come to him a yard down the field. Very odd.

It depends on what your asking them to do, again he has the size and strength, he just needs to learn the techniques and schemes used in the NFL. Mazi has played teams 1st string in 2 games also.. but hey I'm not gonna stop you from being concerened, if your opinion is he will not cut it then thats ok too.

He may never be a great player. This isn't Jalen Carter we drafted. Just hope he develops into a solid DT
