McClay (2017) on Rico in practice - "We can't stop him" against 1st teamers **merged**

No real trade value. They will try to put him in the PS. He will get poached or JJ will pay him enough to stay.

I didn't mean trade Rico just trade for a TE in general.

Rico won't make it to our practice squad. Too much upside for him to not get picked up and most teams value playmakers over adequate blockers.

What we prefer at TE is a dime a dozen.

Let’s see what comes up after cuts. JJ paid him well to stay on the PS his first year. Wondering if he may do it again. At this point Rico may decide to not take the deal and want to be in a 53 somewhere else.

Rico needs to play in actual games. I don't think it's the right career move for him to sit on a practice squad any longer. He's ready. He just needs to enter the grind so he can grow.

He shows more play ability than what we have. If his assignments and blocking skills improved then keep him and use him.

He's shown it. Sorry you haven't recognized it.
No he hasn't. A catch here and there doesn't show anything unless you're at the very least running with the 1st team against starters. I haven't been impressed overall.

Cowboys mostly lined him up at Y. Blocking inline he was consistently able to get his hands inside. Needs to do a better job sustaining as he got ripped twice at the poa but I didn't notice any missed assignments. At the same time he was able to block at the poa and get push. His play strength is impressive.

Also got a chance to see him take a couple of snaps in pass protection where he stoned the OLB pretty easily.

Two caveats to consider are that this was in the second half and most of those players will not be on an NFL roster in a few days and most of the run calls were straight ahead.

i read he gave up a sack. is that right? the streaming had problems so missed 1/3 of the game.
what about the holding penalty? looked clean to me but curious what u think.

Fair enough. His playmaking in limited opportunity hasn't impressed you.

What about Swaim, Jarwin, and Schultz then? Please don't tell me you're impressed by them.

Rico has looked as good as all 3 of them and all 3 have had every opportunity in the world to impress but they are just jags and do jag things.

If players are claimed they have no choice about going to the new team.

If they clear waivers then they have the choice to stay on the PS or go to the other team.

You guys can love on Rico all week if you want but, the coaches have spoken and he's hitting the streets
Saturday afternoon. Since you guys love him, you can buy some Popeye's chicken from him next week
before he heads to Europe to play basketball.

Ok. Thanks for the info. How long are they on waivers?

Did he get any snaps with the first team? They either think he is on the team and just giving him some reps or they are resigned to the fact he likely won’t make the team so they are letting Swaim get work and trying Jarwin and Shultz as 2 and 3 TE.

The first team didn't play.

To be honest, Schultz looks green. But Swaim and Jarwin are my picks for 1 and 2. And it's not close for me. Swaim is the best and most complete TE we have. Jarwin isn't as effective as a pass blocker but does well vs the run and he and Prescott have pretty solid chemistry.
I would keep Schultz over gathers.
I think he has more potential and knows the position.
That's the biggest thing holding Gathers back IMO. He just doesn't know what he's doing.

Judging from the fact he hasn’t gotten a chance to run with the 1s, it don’t look good for him.

I haven't seen anything that suggests he makes the team.
