McClay fans

I see incessant claims of how good McClay is at drafting. Starting this offseason, we will see exactly how good he is. We desperately need D help, and we need it yesterday. So, what's going to happen? More CB's and WR's and TE's?

If he's as good as some claim, then it's time to show it.
We will never know how good he is because he isn’t the GM. We don’t know what he does. Sure we think we know. But we don’t.

who is in charge of our scouting department? THAT person needs to justify himself

because the claim by the Boys is that they follow their draft board

Those picks in April better be DT, MLB, S, DE. CB ETC... Will McClay should be on the phone with Pickens agent as we speak, keep the offense potent and then build your 2026 defense. It is a common sense approach.
You cant expect to draft all those rookies and expect to somehow field a good defense. No way. You have to draft defense talent in the 1st and second that are projected starters. You then use Free Agency to add a few more. Teams also know that Dallas needs defense. Even moving up in the draft is going to cost you more because of this. It is going to take a few years to solidify a good defense.

Yeah, but around here, we have this paradox where you can't grade a draft until 3-4 years later, and by that time, the damage is already done, and then you have to wait another 3-4 years. It has been 3 decades now. Other teams are able to rebuild multiple times in a single decade, but somehow, we aren't. This is what happens when you have an unqualified person pretending to be GM part time.

The team wouldn't be in such bad shape if they didn't ignore free agency for the better part of a decade. The draft is a total crapshoot. Free agency is, to a lesser degree, because you have seen the players in the NFL. You hedge your bets in the draft by doing well in free agency.
Great post.

What adds even more mystery for me is when the 5th round corner out performs the 2nd round corner and the 7th round left tackle outperforms the 1st rounder.

I have no idea what he exactly does and does not do. I have no idea of how good he is at evaluating talent….defense or offense. He may have high input on the picks, he may not. He is still an enigma to me

This highlights one of the problems with the cowboys team building Philosophy.

They are regularly relying on rookies and 2nd year players to not just contribute. But to be key starters.

It’s just not realistic. Yes sometimes you have rookies who come right into the league and are ready to start and be a good player. But many aren’t. Many need 2-3 years to start really hitting their full stride.

I mean seriously. Every single year we are going into the season with key positions being penciled in as having a rookie start and be a key player for us. And it’s just not working.

Think about it.

Just recent history. Lt with Guyton. RG with booker. Center with Beebe.

Mazi at DT. Overshown at LB.

The list goes on.
You hit the nail on the head. They draft rookies and expect them to start and contribute immediately even ones after the 4th round. Not many rookies can do this. Oline seems to be more of an easier position to do this, but not all (Guyton). Other teams build depth thru the draft.

McCoy is like a cow that gives a good bucket of milk and then kicks it over.
He hits on some seems like he's kind of good with offensive lineman.

But the defense someone else needs to draft the defense.

We we finally decide to use a pic on a defensive tackle and he completely spits the bit I mean this guy isn't even tradable.

So with the mcclay it's a roll of the dice

O ok. So when we drafted Micah, Ceedee, Tyler, etc. its Jerry…..
Maybe, maybe not. Under Jerry, the Cowboys dont have a structured drafting method or ideology. Sometimes he goes with who he wants, sometimes its who the HC is pushing, sometimes its McClay and the scouts guy, other times he sides with one of the coordinators pet cats.

There is draft room video though of McClay pounding the table for Mazi and calling him an immediate plug and play starter. But its also known that Trysten Hill was Marinelli’s guy just like DQ pushed hard for Sam Williams, Nashon Wright among others.

But McClay doesnt make the selection of every pick.

Yup, nice summary. From just what little surface level exposure of the Cowboy War Room that has been leaked over the years...

I have always come away feeling it's like a mish mash combination of a bunch of group think participants.

Jerry gives the final Gladiator type thumbs up or thumbs down decision just based on which group think participant he personally wants to give a bone.
Like its "his pick" on this round and the other guy gets a turn on the next round. Everybody gets a voice.
Jerry ultimately decides which voice wins for each round.

That's my take on the Dallas War Room.

He's building the trenches isn't that what you've always wanted us to do!!!!??
