Revisionist NFL draft question
ESPN is promoing a weekend feature on the Chargers' Shawne Merriman. The worldwide leader seems to feel he has built "a strong case" for defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Just wondering what the Valley Boys think the Cowboys might think about this, and what do they think of it?

Matt Mosley's answer to a reader in his column on ***BANNED-URL*** posted earlier today:
I somewhat agree with Parcells when he says you can't measure a player purely on statistics such as sacks. But that's easy to say when your guy has four sacks and Merriman has nine, including two huge ones against the Colts on Sunday.
Ware hasn't had a sack since mid-October, which isn't great news for a guy who's supposed to be a dynamic pass-rusher. But if you're a Cowboys fan, here's what you have to hang your hat on: The Cowboys went with Ware because they thought he had a bigger upside than Merriman.
We shouldn't be shocked that a guy from Maryland is a little ahead of a guy from Troy. I think Ware may be pressing at this point. You remember how he made all those impact plays against the Seahawks in the preseason game? We've only seen flashes of that since. But just because Merriman has made a late push for Rookie of the Year, let's not say the Cowboys whiffed on the pick yet. Collin, calm down and we'll see how this shakes out down the road.
Here's the statistical breakdown that includes the rookie season of the player who Parcells said Ware reminded him of:
•
Merriman: 49 tackles, 9 sacks, 3 pass deflections, two forced fumbles
•
Ware: 46 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 pass deflection
•
Lawrence Taylor: 133 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 8 passes deflected, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception.

Vanilla
From SportsSaypian Chuck H. :
This is in regard to Shawne Merriman and his stats compared to DeMarcus Ware. I don't think it's fair to compare stats, when they both play in different defenses. Granted, they both play in the 3-4, but come on Mike Zimmer's name never comes up when you mention proven def. coordinators, such as a Wade Phillips, Gregg Robinson, Jim Johnson or Monte Kiffin.
Those guys can change a game with their defensive scheme and the way they come up with various blitz packages. Mike Zimmer has been calling a very vanilla defense since he's been there. The line hardly ever stunts, the linemen just do bull rushes ( no spin, swim or club moves) and the can't generate a pass rush lately.
So, in fairness to DeMarcus Ware, a think a lot of people should consider Zimmer's pathetic defensive scheme compared to Phillip's wizardry (if you watched the Colts/Chargers game, he gave Manning fits with his blitzes).
In closing, if Merriman played for Dallas, I can guarantee his sack total wouldn't be as high, with Zimmer holding him back.
