Pro Bowl - Merriman

Rookie made the team - thats very impressive

Okay...I will translate this into meaning you mispoke and you are unsure if he made All-Pro or not.

Thanks for clarifying things ;)

i was listening to eatman and eagleton on dallascowboys.com they were sayin the same thing that merriman was ready to play in the nfl in that position But that even keyshawn was saying merriman isnt playing with pups over there. meaning he went to a team that has been doing the 3-4 for a while and are accustomed to it, and hence can give less of the vanilla blitz schemes and attack the QB alot more. also Ware is doing coverage etc, and from the games ive seen he has alot of pressure if we only had a lil push upfront the QB would step into the Sack by Glover, Ferg, etc... IMHO Ware is coming along and will be a beast in the near future.

I hope Ware grows into the potential. He has long term edge pass rush skills.

Merriman was the safer and better pick at #11. And its playing out that way so far on the field.

No beef with Spears pick #20 Pick....

Agreed. I was for Merriman over Ware the whole time but we have him so it is what it is.

Zimmers doing exactly what Parcells tells him to do or he wouldn't be here.

On the nosey.

It's amazing how Parcells made the statement that he was going to be more involved with the defense this season...he changed it to his cherished 3-4.....he drafted four defensive guys who play now....he signed two more as free agents...AND he kept Zimmer....in fact, upped his pay to keep him...

And the defense's performance is Zimmer's fault.

Amazing.

I don't see any change in the way our D plays since Zimmer was named DC. Maybe BP can bring in the final 2-3 pieces for next year and we can be as good as we all thought we would be.

IMO a tackle for a loss is just as good as a sack, ware has 9, merriman has 5, by the stats they both have 46 tackles but on DC.com they said ware is leading rookies with 54

Perhaps...

It's a 3-4 in name only. It provides all the liabilities of a 3-4 but none of the positives.

One of the ideas behind the 3-4 is to create confusion for the QB so that he doesn't know where the rush is coming from.

Ware, hand on ground...he's rushing from the right side....Ware standing, he's not.

That's about it.

Now, I do understand that the system takes time to perfect...but I'd think we might be able to be a bit more complex than that.

And...the defese has gotten worse as the season has progressed. That's not what any of us expected...and it's not the way it should be.

I had envisioned, with the infusion of young guys, that they'd develop a chemistry...play off each other and breathe some life into Parcells. I figured there would be mistakes but that since we were in a 3-4 and would be creating more turnovers, it would end up being a plus. It would be a different defense than many of us long timers were accustomed to watching but it would be effective.

Instead, we have this vanilla 3-4 that creates no pressure on the QB (our best pass rusher doesn't even start anymore) while the guys STILL make mistakes....worst of both worlds.

Whether Ware will ever be as good for us as Merriman is for SD is up for discussion for the next few years, and it depends on many many different things, including how he's used.

However, it should come as no surprise that Merriman is a man compared to a boy in Ware this season. Why?

Merriman was a standup LB at Maryland...this is not a new position for him...he was used to playing LB, covering receivers and blitzing the QB from different spots, but always from his feet.

Ware, on the other hand, was a down DE on the light side. He's not used to playing on his feet, certainly a liability in coverage at this point, and he's learning to rush from his feet and play the 3-4. It's all new to him.

We can make all the excuses we want for him, and they are correct...he's had the greater challenge this year, but we are still gambling on his greatness...we don't really know what he'll do until he does it.

I see Merriman as the 2nd coming of Junior Seau, only even more of a pass rusher.

I see Ware as a guy who may gain weight and strength and become more of Jon whathisnameeludesmerightnow, the DE in Miami...only we want him to play standup LB instead of DE on the 4-man line. I think Merriman will always be the better 3-4 LB...he looks like one, Ware doesn't (I know...not very scientific), but I think Ware will be a better DE in the 4 man line than Merriman could ever be. With the indecision about which defense we'd end up running, maybe that's part of the reason we took Ware???

I hate the 3-4 scheme personally. I have never liked it- I just believe 4 linemen are better equipped to take on 300 plus pound offensive linemen, stop the run and get to the QB than 4 linebackers- I dunno, just seems like common sense to me. I mean sure, personnel dictates a lot, so that can make a difference, but our personnel is best fit to run a 4-3.

If Merriman was responsible for Half the duties Ware takes on in his role (as rookie by the way) his simple mind would explode.

I have watched and been around Merriman since his High School days here in MD. Ware was the safer pick...........

Wow. Another Merriman/Ware thread. Can't say I'm shocked.

I watched Merriman during the Colts game. He ran many times untouched to the QB, and all of a sudden he's all world. When they accounted for him, he didn't do much. I don't understand the fascination.

Round one goes to Merriman no doubt but a heavyweight fight is schedule for 12 rounds. Let's wait a few years down the road for this one

Merriman is doing now exactly what he did in college. Spears is doing what he did in college, underachieve. Merriman and Castillo would have been better choices. Spears is a boom or bust player and I do have a problem with taking one of those in the first round.

So, what you're basically telling me is that if San Diego brings in Q-Ball you'll be wearing lightning bolts instead of stars.

Thanks for the heads up.

My question is, if Parcells saw that Merriman was the perfect stand up 3-4 guy and Ware wasn't, why didn't he just do the right thing and get Merriman?

And just what duties does Ware take on?

When it's a pass, he almost always runs into the OT.
When it's an outside run, most of the time, he ties up a TE or OT so the RB can get outside of him and make a big run.
Or do you mean he has duties like "not being able to cover Cooley" when he was 1-1 with him and giving up a TD.

What duties does Ware take on and perform that Merriman doesn't?
