I agree with that. I would like enough left over cap space to at least attempt to sign Ayers. Is Ayers a "stud" DE? No. But I would have more faith in him than virtually any DE on the Cowboys rosters including Selvie.

He is not even close to being as good at his position as Melton is. And I do not even think Melton is that studly.

Ayers is one of those first round picks that is lucky he made it through his first contract without being swapped for another struggling first round bust.

I know this will be a draft to rebuild the whole line. But not getting Melton pretty much makes DT a first round lock. It takes away the option of an OL or S or even DE.

I would rather have the draft come to us rather than be desperate for a position as specific.

I'm kinda of the mindset that they're already desperate, but I understand why you won't want them in the position to be desperate.

i hope we dont sign him, just have a feeling hes really not as good as what hes going to get paid

I have never understood this mentality.

How often do teams in free agency get bargains? It is not even set up that way for the most part.

For each Avril/Bennett some team gets at a reasonable price, there are countless other teams who "overpay".

If you are going to sit down at the roulette table, you better not bring a bag of pennies.

Not so sure about that. If they were truly desperate, Melton would probably already be here. The "Marinelli Effect" could have the idea around that he can just "coach up" practically anybody.

Sounds like he wants to be here. His agent used Seattle as leverage. Which is not the greatest thing for us since we will most likely overpay for him. I would be very cautious seeing how he is coming off major surgery. Usually DLineman with that kind of operation decline much quicker.

I have a feeling he's just not going to be any good.

Won't hate the signing if so, just won't be overly excited either.

Garrett has stated that his philosophy on Free agency is to fill holes so that you don't reach in the draft:

In a perfect world, what you want to do is to go into the draft without needs. I think you tend to draft worse when you say, "I think we need to draft this position or that position."...In an ideal situation you want to address your needs prior to the draft. Hard to do that, but you're trying to do that so you can draft as purely as possible.

The failure to do so (even if its only signing the likes of a Livings or Bernadeau) will be because they are cap strapped.

Well, you are the guy who said Aaron Donald is "already better" than Melton. I mean, who needs a pro bowl 3-tech when you have the possibility of landing an unproven draft prospect!

Overpaying for someone with all the issues that Melton has would be something that even Jerry Jones should know better than to get caught up in. Melton has had drinking problems, character issues, and legal penalties that loom large in his future. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest if the other teams involved in the "Melton Sweepstakes" outbid us. His talents are matched by an equal number of red flags that don't exactly augment his desirability. Not so sure that magpie would be more of a blessing or a curse.

Btw heard him on with frito and fitz the other day, said he was never a cowboys fan. He said his uncle played so he would route for who he played for at the time. Said he loved Chicago. Said the only positive about playing in Dallas is he wouldn't have to fly him mom and sister to Chicago for home games and would save money. Just FYI.....kind of a weird cat.

My fear is the knee and the running back turned DT that's all. Btw we had a pro bowl 3 tech that 4 more sacks last year then Melton ever had. He plays for Wash now.

Melton must be considered to be at the very top of the Cowboys' admittedly slim list of free agency targets, despite the fact that he is recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. For the Cowboys, Melton would be a key piece in rebuilding their defensive line. In 2012, Pro Football Focus ranked Melton the fifth best pass-rushing defensive tackle and had him ranked number one in run stop percentage. He is easily the best remaining defensive tackle on the market.

If we can get Melton and then draft Jernigan I'd feel a lot better about our DL situation, nice building blocks going forward
