Michael Irvin: I will work with Johnny Manziel; Cowboys should help save him

I actually agree with Mike.

Regardless of how you feel about Manziel, at least our team won't be as mind blowingly boring to follow

I don't want Manziel here, but I got to say, I feel for the kid. He's young. He's single. He's got the world at his feet, and he's intent on enjoying that as much as he can right now. And he probably has a dependency issue.

Despite all that, he's got enough talent that he's actually a consideration after backing his way out of CLE in embarrassing fashion. And not just a consideration in Dallas.

I don't like it that guys like this become punch lines and jokes publicly. Even if I don't like the odds of it working out, there *is* a chance he puts it together eventually. Grows out of the lifestyle or gets the help he needs, and goes on to have a decent NFL career. Even if that's as a backup and midling part-time starter, he's still got talent worth trying to tap into. That's really all Irvin is saying here. I don't have any problem with Mike offering help if JF wants it.

No no no no! No Johnny football! Ever! Don't even touch that thing with a 100ft. pole.

I hate when people keep saying that JFF and RG3 are ex-1st rounders, with the undercurrent that signing one would be like getting another 1st round pick. Knowing what we know today, would these people pick them in the first round?

Draft position is irrelevant at this stage in their careers. Doesn't matter how you enter the league, NFL stands for Not For Long if you don't knuckle down and work hard.

Jerry Jones has a new line of business. Its called the Dallas Cowboys Rehab Center for the Mentally Challenged. Michael Irvin is vying for the directors position.

Mike's a FA now. He can work with Johnny whether he's a Cowboy or not.

A while back, someone mentioned Glazer saying Aikman became his favorite player after Jay started working in the media because he saw how much pressure the QBOTDC endures. Putting Manziel in that situation and expecting him to deal with that pressure should an injury force him to start for an extended period....No. We now know how Quincy handled that pressure and how well he reformed off the field here; if JF is brought here the most likely result is someone eventually superimposing his face on Quincy's exit photo.

Sorry Mike it does not work that way, Manziel has to be the one willing to change, he is the one that needs to seek professional help. I think Mike can be a great mentor but any change in a person has to start with that person. Manziel has shown nothing to prove he will seek help

Problem is that he did seek professional help. whether that help helped is another issue, because it doesn't appear that it did anything.

At this point, I'd put Manziel on the same level as Jameill Showers. Showers is willing to play S and special teams to make a team...is Manziel? I'd rather Dallas sign a guy that's hungry and wants to prove he belongs in the NFL instead of a coddled brat that's flushed down the toilet most everything that's been handed to him.

Manziel has his problems . There is no doubt about it, but he is not a bad guy like Big Ben and some of the other thugs in the league. The kid likes to drink and he loves women. What normal 23 year old doesn't . Manziel has not raped anyone, killed anybody or committed some of the other crimes that other pro players have done. If you read most of these posts on this board, you would think that he is the devil himself. Much like Dez, Manziel's reputation has been ruined without him committing the first crime. I am not going to argue the point that Manziel is a likable guy. His personality rubs many fans wrong, just like Dez. The pure hate for both of these guys is amazing . It makes it worse when grown fans can't tell the difference between unlikable players and players that are really bad guys.

Took 5 pages of posts to finally find this.
Thank you! I agree 100%.
I'd also like to add, rather than complain about the possibility of this happening, We should also be discussing what our teams strategy would be in the draft and the offseason if Manziel is signed.
Ultimately Jerry is gonna do what he wants and fans won't deter him from making his choice. May as well start thinking of what's most likely to happen rather than what you want to happen.

Well put Idgit, completely agree

There are capable alternatives other than Manziel and RG-III to consider as backups to Romo.

Both Manziel and Griffin carry baggage to accompany them that the others likely wouldn't have.

Here's hoping that Jerry and the Cowboys discover that fact and make the most of it very soon.

Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin joined Rich Eisen to chat about Johnny Manziel.

Manziel is expected to be released by the Cleveland Browns in March, and Irvin would love to see the former Texas A&M Aggies star in a Cowboys uniform.

"I love the game of football and the game of football saves lives," Irvin said. "If you can get a young guy, Johnny Manziel won aHeisman Trophy at 18-19 years old. He is still growing up. I don't know why we think if a guy can throw a football it makes him the most mature person in the world. There will come a time when he will cross over that threshold and become a great football playerm and I am willing to workwith him on that and I hope the Cowboys do get him.

"I know this kid has worked hard to get where he is. Let's give the kid another shot, he lands in a better spot and get around the right kind of people. Help him become a better football player and a better man. That's what the game of football does."

The problem is Manziel isn't 18 anymore.

He's been given chance after chance after chance after chance after chance after chance and he keeps ****** up.

Further, if you listen to people, he's never really worked had to get where he is. He's always just skated by on his talents. He was not known as a tireless worker at A&M, on and off the field.

The problem here isn't that Manziel is a kid that had a rough upbringing, came into some NFL money and got off the straight and narrow path. Manziel is a spoiled, pampered brat who has been given everything to him on a silver platter and that's a hard mentality to change.

I struggle to feel for him. He's been given numerous chances and has had the warning signs flare up since he was a frosh at A&M and he just ignored them.

He's in his 20s now, he's not 8 years old. He knows right and wrong, he knows how he should act versus how he really acts.

Irvin can help him all he wants. I don't have an issue with that. But offer your help anywhere else but in Dallas.

Michael Irvin mentoring Johnny Football?? Sounds like a great idea. Reminds of that scene in Seinfeld where Newman was having a breakdown in court and Kramer says, don't worry judge he's in my custody. While he's wearing a pirate eyepatch

I don't think he is the devil I think he is a kid with problems and a 4-12 team does not need problem players they need people who are driven and passionate about the game and winning. Manziel is not that he has never been that and now he is going to change? BS went to rehab gets out and back out partying this is not a guy seeking help. In terms of talent he is not that good and not worth the trouble. Dallas has serious business ahead of them and better get serious people not some flake

In could see him having a 5 touchdown day as QB of Cowboys.mwinning the game.

That night he would be trashed and face down in night club.

Then the suspension after that? Position like QB the guy better have his head screwed on right. The team depends too much on the QB to have some flake running the show

If we draft a QB we're going to have to bring in a veteran (Cassel won't be back) as insurance so Manziel and RG3 will be under consideration because the pickins may be pretty slim in free agency at backup QB. Teams don't part ways with solid backup QBs so RG3 could end up being the most attractive one available we'll just have to see when the time comes. For me if I'm taking a QB at #4 overall I'm going to be looking to slowly faze Romo out and give my young QB some opportunities to gain a little experience during the regular season. If Romo goes down he may never get his job back if the rookie starts winning some games.

You don't take a QB that high to carry a clipboard until Romo is done so if I'm in charge they're going to see the field some whether Romo is injured or not. I'm going to come up with a package to get them on the field because it's important that they gain some experience and not go stale standing on the sidelines. Most of the starting QBs who are having success started as rookies or at least got some opportunities to play early in their career such as Aaron Rodgers and Phillip Rivers. You can't just shelve a top QB prospect for a couple of years and not give them some regular season work. You have to keep them involved because any QB taken in the top 5-10 is going to want to play.

The problem with this is....I don't see Griffin or Manziel as a "veteran". Those 2 guys are "brands". I don't think they would bring much in terms of mentoring a young QB. They are still learning just like a rookie would. If you use the #4 overall pick on a QB...Cassell could still be brought back.

"You know how many psychologists it takes to change a lightbulb?

Well, it only takes one, but it takes a very long time, and the bulb has to really want to change."

Seriously, there are some diagnoses that can be treated, like bipolar disorder, social anxiety or panic disorder, chronic dysthymia or depression, even PTSD. But JFB's arrogance and disregard for rules and/or authority is indicative of antisocial and narcissistic tendencies, which are difficult to change.
He may be in his 40's before he evolves into responsibility and commitment.

So, taking him on would likely represent a waste of time and energy and create a huge negative distraction.

And then there's the Manziels................. Sociopathic narcissist. He's the whole ball 'o wax.

BTW.....great post, Doc.

Rack 'em up.................

He's enjoying himself at the expense of destroying his word to everyone that's tried to give him a chance in the NFL.

He embarrassed his employer, who spent millions of dollars and a prime pick on him, he lied to his coaches, and even worse, lied to his teammates.

There are hundreds of kids in the DFW area, that never got a chance to be a millionaire NFL QB with an entitlement and dependency problem, who could use Mike's help if he's really intent on helping someone.
