HUGE risk/HUGE potential reward.

With a defense that loaded, Dallas can afford to take these kinds of risks...and certainly afford to redshirt the 34th overall pick!!
SWEEET:cool:

My guess is that there are 15 teams that would have given Dallas their 2017 1st rounder for that 34th pick...some that will almost surely be picking in the top 5.
Think about that.
Those saying this was a steal may want to think of that...that pick was maybe worth a top 5 pick next year on an injury free play player.

In the end, he's a Cowboy....just want him to have an amazing career.

Am I the only one disappointed that Irvin didn't introduce us with the America's Team name like Casillas and Henning did? I was sure if anyone would do that the playmaker would

I don't see it. Two very different players in terms of style of play. Kuechly initially started at the WILL and was pretty good, but not great at it. Then the Panthers moved him to the MIKE and he destroyed everything in sight. Smith is more of the opposite. Could be a very good MIKE, but would be better suited at the WILL.

...I don't see Kuechly when I watch Smith. Not saying he can't be as good or even better, but just not the comp I would make. Maybe just the way Kuechly was used at BC (7 ints) is just different than the way Smith was used (1 int) but I just don't see the same skill set.

Mike nailed it too. I can't wait until all of the early doubters are on the edges of their seats next year cheering on our incredible steal in the 2nd round.

We basically got two 1st rounders this year. Bravo Front Office. Bravoooooooo.

Why isn't Irvin on our coahing staff??????

We got 3 first rounders last year. So this has been incredible....:)

I love the kid. I think he is a stud but I worry about his injury and I didn't like taking him top of the 2nd when we need people this year. I don't trust the Romo window and a stud LB won't help a year or two from now when we have no offense.

Hope it all falls into place.

I think he could be better than Kuechly but I'm not sold on him ever playing again and then regaining what he had before his injury...

Jerry says he might play in October so we'll see.. I call bs.

I would imagine Irvin was talking about being like Luke in the type of dominance and impact on the game.

Man we have some people that just are stuck on negative.

It is not about being negative....they are just different kinds of LBs.....it would be like comparing EE to Barry Sanders

Honestly, I don't care what our Irvin says about a Cowboys linebacker. Love 'em, but he's another Cowboys homer. It's like... 'who is the best LB in the league right now?... Kuechly? Yea, Keuechly... Smith is gonna be that guy.'

Are we sure this guy will ever play a down in the NFL?

I think we must feel pretty good about his chances to take him in the second. I don't think drafting him was just a whim.

There are very few examples, if any, when someone that had this same injury, WANTED to come back, and didn't. There are numerous examples of them not playing at as high a level, but that is not what you asked.

I'm not against the pick myself because I see what they are gambling on but if someone calls and wants to give you a 2017 1st for 34 overall you take it...

PICK ANALYSIS:
"It takes a decision maker with conviction to make a selection like this. It starts with Jerry Jones; people who think outside the box and pull the trigger on these type of investments. I thought he could be Luke Kuechly at the next level. Smith is three downs all day long. Make no mistake, he will not play in 2016. This is all about a nerve regenerating and nobody knows if and to what extent." -- Mike Mayock

Read the post in this thread and tell me we don't have some people stuck on negative.

OP post a positive article where cowboys great Mike Irvin is excited about our 2nd round pick and a bunch of depressed negative dudes chime in with some crap about if the guy will even play or not.

Its just amazing how some people cant let themselves be happy.

Its like if we just won a game and are sitting at 4-0 and people want to complain that we gave up 3 sacks. Just enjoy the ride.

I don't think either of the people saying he isn't Kuechly are down on the pick. I even made a point to say he could be just as good or better, I just think it's lazy to us players who excel in different areas as comparisons.

The general trade equivalent is usually (ballpark) a current year 2nd for following year mid 1st rounder. So seeing that Dallas' 2nd rounder was already close to being a 1st rounder, I suspect that would have been very easy to get.
I'm not saying Dallas for should have, I was just saying that if you take a player at the top of the 2nd round who will miss a year anyway (while getting paid), you would hope he plays like a mid to high 1st rounder going forward.
I think that is what Dallas expects...and what the value says they should expect
