Michael Irvin: Jaylon Smith is next 'Luke Kuechly'

can you find any link where someone made that comparison?

I'm not going to dig through year old threads to point out the countless people talking about how dominant Gregory was going to be for us. People tend to grossly exaggerate draft picks post-draft, it gets about as tiresome as the talk leading up to the draft.

All Smith is right now is a player with a bad knee and a good college career. It ends there. He's no Luke Kuechly until he proves it.

The real answer is nobody knows

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure there are a small contingent here (who just live to criticize everything) that have said he will likely never play.

This guy will turn out to be better than Myles Jack and have a more impactful career. Mark those words down and stick then on the fridge.

PICK ANALYSIS: "It takes a decision maker with conviction to make a selection like this. It starts with Jerry Jones; people who think outside the box and pull the trigger on these type of investments. I thought he could be Luke Kuechly at the next level. Smith is three downs all day long. Make no mistake, he will not play in 2016. This is all about a nerve regenerating and nobody knows if and to what extent." -- Mike Mayock

He reminded me of Clay Mathews on he video of him from the ND practices. I'll take next Clay

I believe in this kid more than any draft pick this team has had in recent memory. I don't understand why so many people want to focus on the negative possibilities. The Cowboys got a player that would have been a top three pick with the 34th selection, bottom line. It will be like getting a bonus first round choice when he comes back in 2017. If Jerry is right, maybe sooner.

Of course, I realize there's a chance he may never play. But no draft pick, even the healthy ones, come with guarantees. Any of this year's first rounders could be ridiculous busts. But from reading about Jaylon Smith, and learning what he's all about, I would not bet against him.

Get well, Jaylon, and lead this defense for years to come!!

I have not read many negative list about Smith that didn't concern his injury. Fans have a right to question the pick considering that it is not a sure thing that he will recover. I don't take the conversations as negative, but they are based on reality.

Those comparing this pick to last year's 2nd. I don't think Gregory is or was close to Smith's level coming out of college. Jaylon Smith should be more hyped than Gregory.

This is why Michael Irvin is my favorite Cowboy. He's the only former player I know for sure is just as big a Cowboys fan as I am. He's #1 on my list of players I would love to meet and get an autograph.

I agree. Mike is the best.

I met him once at DFW airport, it was the day after the 2001 Super Bowl from which he was arriving back home... I just went up to him, and I told him, "we love you Mike, Dallas will always love you, no matter what"... He looked back at me, gave me that trademark smile and a chuckle, he stuck out his hand and said thank you, I shook his hand, then he pulled me in for a little man-hug... Michael is a sweet guy and he adores his fans... I was also fortunate enough to have a 5 minute conversation with Tex Schramm less than a year before he passed away... It's funny, I didn't ask Mike for an autograph, as i did not want to bother him, but with Tex, I just could not help myself! I was actually more star struck by the great Tex Schramm...

That's because you would never find it. Maybe Haley but not Reggie White who was more of a JJ Watt type playing SDE in 4-3.

Right. I get the Haley comparison if you just watch his highlight reel. But no one ever compared him to Reggie White.
