Yes, they are going to the Super Bowl because they are VERY GOOD coaches, NOT because they are African-American. YES, a 100% CORRECT.

What certain people are celebrating is the fact that, for a very long time African-American coaches didn't get thier fair share in the NFL (which to a certain extent reflects the larger society it is a part of), they weren't given the opportunity, simply because they were African-American and the train of thought for a long time was that African-Americans didn't have the intellectual capacity to be head coaches in the NFL. Therefore, it took us, as a society, this long to see an African-American coach in the Super Bowl. However, we are NOW here, and it is a milestone recognized by millions of people in this society.

It is great that you judge an individual by his qualities alone and not by his skin color. But the fact that 2007, will be the first time ever, in the NFL, an African-American coach will take his team to the Big Game should tell you something. Society as a whole hasn't progressed as much as you claim you yourself have.

I thought the NFL was intent on Minority Coaches. Why isn't there any Hispanic Coaches in the NFL? Why doesn't anyone seem to care? Hispanics are the largest minority in the country by a good amount.

How about this, Norv Turner as hc/oc, he brings with him Mike Singletary as d/c, and brings back coach Joe as special teams coach, possibly even bringing in Russ Grimm as o-line coach/ asst. h/c or from Norvs San Diego days he brings back Hudson Houck to the same title.

What would be the significance of bringing in a Norv Turner over a Ron Rivera, Mike Singletary, or perhaps even a Russ Grimm or a Rex Ryan? I like the mention of Singletary as DC but I would rather see him as DC under someone like Ron Rivera.

Wouldn't Norv be considered a "retread" now? Why not get some new young blood in here?

Ron Rivera would be a perfect hire then but your contention. I'm all for it.

If he just treated balls like bullets they'd find their mark every time.

Uh, because Hispanic Americans don't face the same historical racism that blacks faced in America.

That doesn't mean that Hispanics aren't discriminated against, but it wasn't in the same way and in the same spirit that blacks were discriminated against.

By the way, a Hispanic coach has already won the Super Bowl - Tom Flores. ;)

Anybody arguing that Smith's and Dungy's SB appearances aren't historic because of their own personal point of view about race/ethnicity might be missing a larger point.

I won't spend a lot of time going into detail about the grooming of NFL head coaches, but let's just concede the fact blacks were denied the same opportunities that their white counterparts were offered for many years, despite the fact that blacks were overrepresented (relative to their makeup of the general population) amongst NFL players. A lot of this had to do with the attitudes of old-school owners that grew up in a different era from most of us.

Now, in a league that has a policy forcing teams to at least interview minority candidates, both SB coaches are minorities. They achieved their results with intelligence and hard work rather than any special favor afforded to them by their minority status. The are two of only seven minority coaches, making the result highly unlikely.

As a result, they are a strong counterexample to those in power that might hold preconceived notions about the ability of minority coaches, and for that reason, their accomplishments are historic.

Without milestones like these, it is hard to expect the narrow-minded to see things in a new way. For that alone, people who long for a society in which skin color is not a basis for division of wealth and power should celebrate events like these, not brush them away as if the had no import.

In 1984, Rivera was a second round choice draft pick for the Chicago Bears, becoming the first Puerto Rican to play in the NFL. In 1986, he played in Super Bowl XX, which the Bears won and he thus became the first Puerto Rican to play in a Super Bowl Championship Team. Rivera played for the Bears for a total of nine seasons (1984-1992). Rivera also participated in the Super Bowl Shuffle, a rap music video the Bears made.

Hey look. There's that pesky "first" word again.

Er, I skipped the thread, but wanted to say that Ditka was just on 103.3 for his weekly bit, and he talked about Rivera. He said he coached him and he was always a very heady player who knows his stuff. He and his wife are first-class people.

But he really seemed to rave about Singletary. Said he's the one who talked Mike into coaching because he knew he'd be so good at it. Said everyone knows Xs and Os, but the difference is people skills and handling players, and Mike has that gift. Said he could coordinate the D if he had to, and that defense would always be ready to play.

I dunno, but Singletary seems like one of those young coaches who *could* turn into a really good one. Anyone who saw him play has to admire his intensity and passion for the game.

The uproar about black coaches is that they are overrepresented among players but (historically) underrepresented among coaches. Playing experience has long been valued in coaching candidates.

Historically, there have been few Hispanic players, so the lack of Hispanic candidates among coaching candidates is not surprising.

I'd take either one right now. Imagine if we get Rivera for HC and he talks Singletary into being his DC. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZINGGGGGGG :D

Intensity is a good word.

That's something we've lacked the past few years.

I think a guy like Mike Singletary would instill some intensity to our team.

I just don't see Jerry making this move.
