Yes, they are going to the Super Bowl because they are VERY GOOD coaches, NOT because they are African-American. YES, a 100% CORRECT.

What certain people are celebrating is the fact that, for a very long time African-American coaches didn't get thier fair share in the NFL (which to a certain extent reflects the larger society it is a part of), they weren't given the opportunity, simply because they were African-American and the train of thought for a long time was that African-Americans didn't have the intellectual capacity to be head coaches in the NFL. Therefore, it took us, as a society, this long to see an African-American coach in the Super Bowl. However, we are NOW here, and it is a milestone recognized by millions of people in this society.

It is great that you judge an individual by his qualities alone and not by his skin color. But the fact that 2007, will be the first time ever, in the NFL, an African-American coach will take his team to the Big Game should tell you something. Society as a whole hasn't progressed as much as you claim you yourself have.

excellent post...

Fact is RACE is a very important thing to mention. The history of a black coach has been stereotyped as someone who is not smart enough to be a head coach. So when two black coaches get into a superbowl it is HUGE and it NEEDS to be mentioned, it is proof that blacks are smart enough to be HC. Fact is if a black man were to run for president in the next election(Barack Obama) people would not vote for him just because of the fact that he is black. Same with a woman(Hilary Clinton), because she is a woman people would vote for someone else. Fact is America is STILL RACIST and SEXIST today. Maybe not to the extent as it was, but it still is prejudice. People use things like "race shouldn't be mentioned" to hide the fact that race still plays a role here in this country, people figure if we stop talking about it it will go away. I we have cancer or diabetes will it just go away? NO, it has to be treated, other wise it is still there just not mentioned...If at one time people all together stopped mentioning race and sex, this country would STILL be the highly racist country it was, there would have been no civil rights movement in the 60's and minorities would still be eating out of the back of restaurants in the kitchen; why, because race isn't being mentioned, but fact is it would still be there.
although I do understand that the wise DR. King said, that people should stop judging people by the content of their skin and start judging by the content of their charcter... he also said that black people should stop taking the tranqulizing drug of gradulism( a part of the speech a lot of people forget )... Race is still huge and should mentioned especially if its of the likes of a black coach coming to Dallas.

Er, I skipped the thread, but wanted to say that Ditka was just on 103.3 for his weekly bit, and he talked about Rivera. He said he coached him and he was always a very heady player who knows his stuff. He and his wife are first-class people.

But he really seemed to rave about Singletary. Said he's the one who talked Mike into coaching because he knew he'd be so good at it. Said everyone knows Xs and Os, but the difference is people skills and handling players, and Mike has that gift. Said he could coordinate the D if he had to, and that defense would always be ready to play.

I dunno, but Singletary seems like one of those young coaches who *could* turn into a really good one. Anyone who saw him play has to admire his intensity and passion for the game.

Why would we listen to Mike Ditka about anything? Ever heard him on ESPN? Terrible. Probably one of the least insightful commentators Ive ever heard.

My problem here is that I don't see many people running around saying this...It's more along the lines of, 'hey, two black men are coaching in the superbowl!' You seem to be adding your own justification to the statement and as a result, your losing sight of the big picture. I've said it a thousand times in the last two minutes: it's history and history is always worth mentioning. Some people are trying to spin what this history means, yeah sure, but that doesn't, nor should it, preclude people from mentioning it

Why is it history? Saying it's history makes it sound like you didn't think a black coach could ever reach the Super Bowl. Again, why is is history? If race is unimportant, how is it history? It's only history for people who want to make something out of it that it isn't. It's two very good football coaches taking their teams to the Super Bowl. The fact that you think it's history makes me wonder.

Maybe for some, this topic should only be about two coaches taking thier respective teams to the Super Bowl. But to others, it represents much more than that. For those who belong to a historically 'disadvantaged' group in our society, this is somewhat of an underdog story. For some who are part of the dominant group in this society, the issue of 'race' in general and more particularly the hoopla surrounding Smith and Dungy as first African-American coaches to play in the Big Game is very perplexing to them. That is becasue for some (and i do emphasize SOME) thier own racial identity is never been an issue and therefore can not understand why other people make a big deal out of stories like this.

Yes, slavery no longer exist, and Yes there is no explicit law thar requires people to live in segregated niegborhoods, etc.... However, we are only removed what not much longer than 60 yrs from the days of segregation. Therefore, it is extremely naive and a little shortsighted to believe that just because we have passed certain laws to overcome legalized racism we are now free of stereotypes, discrimination, and outright racism. And if you don't experience this type of humiliation simply because you have a different shade of skin then perhaps you can have a problem understanding some of the perspectives presented here celebrating this achievement.

The solution is not to claim 'color blindness', NOONE is color blind. You cant live in this society and be color blind. Now that does not mean you have to be racist, but rather you have to be aware of some of the 'concious' and uncouncious' stereotypes and assumptions we construct regarding certain people. In order to do that, you have to be aware of the history and the society that has made you who you are. And celebrating important milestones achieved by certain individuals (and thus groups) is celebrating a step away from a very dark and shameful time in this country's very short history.

I can see Singletary as the Cowboys' next HC. First of all, he's a native Texan (born and raised in Houston and played college ball at Baylor). Second, he was the inspirational leader of the 1985 Chicago Bears defense (one of the greatest defenses in NFL history), so he knows how to command respect from players. Lastly, I don't think his coaching experience should be much of a factor (If the Steelers saw fit to hire 34-year-old Mike Tomlin after only one year as a DC, hiring Singletary shouldn't be much of a concern for the Cowboys).

Singletary would bring dignity and a very strong demeanor to the team at the DC or HC position. I'm all for him at either one. The guys would rally around him and leave their hearts out on the field the way he did when he played. If Rivera and Singletary both came to Big D I might have to throw a party.

The real RACISTS are those that continually bring it up all the time. And there are just as many RACISTS with black skin as white.
JJ will hire whoever he thinks will be the best coach- and he will not care f he is black, yellow, red, brown or white.

Singletary would bring discipline and respect and creativity along with tenacity. It would also likely mean the end of T.O.

If the next HC doesn't believe TO helps the team take it to the next level then so be it.

You never forget where you've been or where you come from. I was taught that as a small child and it rings true today. It makes me level headed, warm, genuine, and selective. If that defines racist than I guess I am a racist. :p:

I would share a Guinness with the same people I argue with daily on this board in a heartbeat. ;)

I've extended open invitations to the regular season games to anyone close. Regular season games in HD with 5.1 on the 60" in my living room anytime. You just have to get here and back. (plus have an appetite for Heineken) :D
