Missing ingredient

Myles Garret is out of reach, top three for sure. Derek Barnett might be possible though.

I like where you are headed but this is a future solution. Cowboys still need help THIS season. Jerry needs to figure out which of his resources have 1) trade value and 2) will not be re-signed next year. This is a young team with a "next man up" attitude that is for real. Cowboys need to figure out if Leary or Lael Collins are the future at OG. Do they re-sign Terrence Williams, Escobar, Brandon Carr, Barry Church, etc.

And which back up players are expendable: Darren McFadden, Morris, Sanchez, Dunbar

More importantly, who are the trade targets? A proven pass rusher will be almost impossible to trade for at this time. We had a chance when Mo Wilkerson and Jets were in hostile negotiations and trade talk was prevalent, that's not on table anymore. Instead of overpaying, identify players like Mayowa who have potential BUT with proven past production who are also stuck in a deep DE rotation. Look at teams with deep edge rusher rotations like Vikings, Broncos, etc. Cleveland's Ty Holmes is an affordable player that fits this description.

A fast LB should be the other target. A LB that can cover RBs and TEs. Teams with great (and deep) LB corps are Seahawks, Jags, Panthers, Broncos, Pats, etc. Do not think Myles Jack will supplant either Telvin Smith or the Poz, would be out of position at SAM. But Jack would be the perfect complement to Lee when Cowboys only have 2 LBs on the field, able to play MIKE or WILL. Most importantly, Jack would allow Cowboys to cover teams like Pats with 2 dominant TEs.

Cowboys have decisions to make after the bye when they have injured players expected to return and cuts will have to be made. Why not package a few trades for crucial target positions and strengthen the D going into the 2nd half of the season. Now is not the time to say "next season" when small changes can still be made now. THIS season is still here to be conquered. Do not rest on our laurels, take chances, the Ring is the thing, THIS SEASON.

The missing ingredient for us to win the Super Bowl is currently an effective pass rush. We have been getting by without it, but let's all agree we aren't very good at getting to and sacking the QB. It might be the difference between winning the super bowl and an early exit in the playoffs.

What are the chances that Jerry trades for a stud pass rusher to put us over the top? If there was a team like Cleveland, or another bottom dweller that had a stud pass rusher, would you give up a 1st or 2nd round pick to get us over the top, assuming of course that we could sign the player to a longer term deal?

I would be ok, with us waiting and standing pat and trying to manufacture a pass rush with what we have. I was just wondering what you guys think about it.

Missing ingredient .... we need the second coming of Charles Haley :)

There is another option, dare I say it, Hardy. No long term contract, no draft picks traded.

Rarely... rarely does trading for the "final piece" work.

Ask the Vikings about Hershel Walker.

Joey Galloway anyone?

Remember Roy Williams the WR.

I doubt you're going to see ANYTHING happen.

If this team is going to win it's going to win with what it has.

I thought I read where posters were already projecting Super Bowl or us being contenders sans a great defense.
A little early for that IMO. Not only projecting us to be there but to project it will be the pats. I'll play and say it will be us and the pats but I can't project what each team will look like at that time. I'm worried about the eagles and winning the east. Everything else is icing on the cake. I'll worry about the super bowl if/when we get there.

McFadden comes to mind maybe we can get some one to contribute some.

I don't expect our pass rush to have a dramatic turnaround, but I wouldn't judge based on the Green Bay game.

It was apparent that the gameplan was to rush 3 or 4 and do a lot of ‘mush rush’ against Rodgers. So you’re getting a lot of 5 and 6 blocking against 3 or 4 or 5 blocking against 4, but the 4 are trying to maintain their lanes and bat down some passes.

It was obvious to me that Marinelli wanted to keep Rodgers in the pocket and force him to throw and anticipate instead of him scrambling and creating broken plays and WR’s springing open.

The pass rush was really good against the Bengals and we tried to rush Dalton. I also started to see some life out of Tyrone Crawford in the Packers game. It will be interesting to see down the road and probably won’t be able to really tell until the Skins game again.

I think the book on Wentz is to keep him in the pocket. The Browns are lousy, Steelers may not have Roethlisberger and the Ravens aren’t that good. You have to throw blitzes and pressure at Cousins because he can’t consistently make somewhat difficult throws.

YR

An article I read before the game said that was how teams were shutting down the Packers passing attack. Flood the zones and let Rodgers try to find the receiver. I think that's how Church got another interception yesterday.

Not talking about "final piece" at all, in fact quite the opposite. All my examples were complementary players with smaller financial risks. But still upgrades.

Methinks you are reading into my post what you want it to say rather than what was actually said.

Or 2 defenders who can blanket TEs. Cowboys have one defender who can do that: Byron Jones

We're talking about going up against Tom Brady with no pass rush. He'll scorch our secondary.

Never said we shouldn't upgrade pass rush. One should not preclude the other. Both huge needs.

That is an excellent question, because I think you and I are seeing the same thing. This team is really good...but with the addition of 1 pass rusher, this team could be great. So, to answer your question, allow me to setup the parameters and discuss caveats a little bit if a first round pick is the asking price:

Ideally, the pass rusher in question is nearing the end of their first contract and is no older than 26; 27 and above no thanks. Unless he is playing linebacker, I want no defensive ends coming from the 3-4; while an exception could be made for an OLB in the 3-4, I would honestly prefer someone already playing as a DE in a 4-3, for what should be obvious reasons, but I only bring it up because that narrows down the search by quite a bit. Then, lastly you can go ahead and narrow that down further by removing all team's that have a chance, however slight, to make waves in the postseason. What teams and players does that leave?

People that want to trade Romo no nothing about the salary cap and how it effects what a team can do. Tony isn't going anywhere this year and frankly probably not next year either unless he retires. I would seriously doubt we give up any picks for a current DE although I could see us trading McFadden for a pick. We will wait for Gregory and hope he can provide some rush at the end of the season. Irving seems to be coming on and Lawrence as well. Going into the 2017 draft you would have to believe it is going to be DE, WR, CB as the top concerns although I would throw in RT also. We seem to be sticking with the BPA and it is working out, so I'll default to Stephen Jones on this. As to free agents, seriously doubt we will make a play for any high priced guy, done that, failed at that, probably not going to repeat the mistakes again.

Sean Lee? Or Jaylon Smith? We can man up with them. Press and jam the receivers. Give our pass rush time to get to Brady.
