More than $50M eh? It amazes me that he was in bankruptcy making the kind of numbers you just popped off the top of your head. Thats more than $4.1M per month. More than $130k per day. Jackson DID NOT make $50M last year. You are highly mistaken. His songs get no air play, he wasn't in any movies, and he didn't have any celebrity contract deals.
Mike's songs get a ton of airplay because his music is HEAVILY sampled.

Due to all the musical tributes going on, I've heard songs that I didn't realize were his that had been sampled or redone. I'm not simply talking about sampled lyrics, but his general musical catalong. His catalog alone is worth millions and if he still has the Beatles catalog, then that could put him a whole 'nother realm.

I'm not shamed. I wore mine until the 9th grade.

I have lots of unfortunate pics with that hair style. The most painful was in the 3rd grade where we'd run out of activator and it was picture day at school. My brother who was in the 8th and was trying to be helpful thought he could make a batch after seeing my mom make it.

Uhmm no. By lunch, I had a two big afro puffs and puff ball in the back. I really tried to be happy in my pic.

:lmao2::lmao2::lmao2:

I didn't have jeri curls but i had a kick#@$ fro back in the day. :D

I was born and raised in Ethiopia, hence the Ethio in my handle. I moved to the US when i was 16, lived in TX for 14 years, in KY for 6 and now i'm in WV.

I can guarantee you I never heard of the name Elvis until i came to the US and i was born and raised in the capital city in Ethiopia and had access to music from all over Africa, Europe, US, Asia, etc...

You may not have, but I'm willing to bet Elvis was not unknown. His movies were huge and were played all over the world.

They are? I haven't heard any of his songs in years. Well, until recently of course. Even though, if I hadn't heard them, he damn sure wasn't making $50M a year from what air play he was getting.

C'mon man, surely you had heard of Elvis before arriving in the states?

Maybe I should call my 15 year old niece and her and her friend who is staying with my Mom from Oregon and ask them to name an Elvis Pressley song.

She will know who he is but I gurantee you she can't name one of his song.

Seriously?

Maybe I should call the Commandant of the Marine Corps and see if he knows any running cadences....and then ask him if he knows the last album Elton John put out.

WG, that may be stretching things a bit.

Now if we are talking Old School 105.7, 94.5 K-Soul or Heaven 97, then you may be on to something :lmao2: .

I never said he was unknown by everyone i can't speak to a population of 50 million in the 1980s. I'm sure there were some people who knew of him and had his records. Perhaps the older generation. My generation grew up on different types of music.

We grew up watching kung ** and Indian movies, that's in addition to the big movies like Rambo, missing in action, etc..... No Elvis movies that i remember.

Get this, and this usually throws people for a loop, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton were the most popular white American singers during my time in Ethiopia. But for the most part motown was the genre that people related to.

The myth about the music industry is that you can only make money by the amount of airplay you get. That helps, of course, but if Mike is listed as an artist, writer, producer, arranger, anywhere on a song, then he gets money for EACH of those roles on the songs. Remember his catalog goes back a long way. Jackson 5 music is heavily sampled.

If the lyrics are sampled, he gets money off the writer credit.
If the arrangement is sampled, he gets money.
If even a rhythm is sampled, he gets money.
Whenever a compilation comes out and an artist's song is on it, he'll get paid off each sale. All those various compilation hit CDs he has, he gets money off of it.

Now with youtube, Itunes, etc... the possibility for money is endless.

There are numerous ways to make money in the music industry. You don't have to be the face on the song to make it,

In the context of the quote, I was referring to how much it's sampled, mick. Not the original versions. Duh!

Yeah, that is the only Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton song I know.

Just like Elvis, I know who Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton are but my knowledge of them is very limited.

We had to go to the movie theater to watch them but yeah, back in the day they were awesome.

I can't tell you how many of us hurt ourselves trying to imitate the martial artists after we watch those movies.:laugh2:

How can you not see that he was using it in a completely different manner is beyond me. How you can think that a 16 year old knowing an Elvis song is suggesting the opposite is beyond me as well.

Now if you had asked your nieces' grandfather if he had heard of MJ (and he had) and then asked if he had heard of Elvis (and he hadn't).....then we'll talk.

Taking Elvis' and MJ's target audiences to prove a point doesn't work.

I just walked up to my 16 year old daughter and asked her to name an Elvis Presley song. She is completely unaware of my amusement with this thread. Without a pause she said, "Jailhouse Rock."

What exactly is the difference between the above and me asking my 15 year old Niece the same exact question?

No need to respond, the only difference is that you agree with Hostile's take on Elvis and so you try to claim there is a difference.
