MJ was deemed the King of Pop...not Rock and Roll.

He gave himself that nickname after Elizabeth Taylor suggested it to him.

Fans gave Elvis the name, "King of Rock and Roll".

Im gonna get out of this debate.

I really hate to see people resort to "tearing down" a talented individual just to prop up "their" guy.

Mike was great.

Elvis was great.

You don't have to belittle one or the other to make a strong case for either one being the greatest.

Wrong. Quite frankely, I think it "strengthens" my argument.

I can name quite a bit of songs done by artists back in the day.

The Beatles, Johnny Cash (The original man in black), John Lennon (solo) etc etc.

I knew who Elvis Pressely was but I never listened to his songs.

Do I understand you right? You can't name ONE Elvis song?

You have NEVER heard of Hound Dog????

I cannot believe that.

The thread wasn't about whether one was good or bad. It was about who is the bigger Icon. And it's not even close, IMO.

No one's ignoring the man's accomplishments, Hos. Just that it's not out of the realm of possibilities that a person from another country may not have heard of Elvis

That's plausible. I'm sure that millions of Americans are oblivious to the world's top soccer players, who are household names everywhere but the United States.

That's a good point. I think I know only two. Beckham...and former phenom Freddy Adu.

Well, maybe three. Who was the chick who played for the American team? Brandi somebody, right?

That's about the extent of my knowledge.

In the biography of the Beatles...they said that most of their inspiration came from Elvis...(and to a certain extent, Bob Dylan because of the way he writes lyrics)...

Without Elvis, there are no Beatles. As a second rate musician myself, I read and study music not from just notes and scales but history as well.

Elvis changed the whole world of rock and roll...without his hip gyrations and other dance moves, it's possible that the "crotch grabbing" of today's pop culture music may never have happened...?

Jackson is an icon, however, he DID NOT change a whole musical culture like Elvis did...no how, no way. MJ did his music, and I love some of his stuff, but, when someone as great as the Beatles comes along and changes the whole culture of music and gives credit to Jackson, then I will always agree with the Beatles...Elvis changed music as we know it today,

Not true, at all. His impact was that he exposed the hip gyrations and whatnot that were already being done by lesser artists to the pop culture. He wasn't the first artist to have dancing gyrations to his performance.

Elvis Presley was the King of Rock & Roll. He was a world icon.

Michael Jackson was the King of Pop. He was a world icon.

Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul. She is a world icon.

Etc., etc.

People can debate until they are blue in the face for who was the bigger icon, but I have to ask why? They were/are ICONS. None will ever be diminished in the eyes of their fans everywhere.

More relevant arguments for me would be, "Was there ever a bigger Rock & Roll personality than Presley" or "Was there ever a bigger Pop personality than Jackson" or "Will there ever be a bigger Soul personality than Franklin", etc. In my opinion, those arguments would be as equally meaningless, but since people have to find SOMETHING to argue about...

The biggest difference is back in Elvis' day no one would consider a child molester an icon.

Maybe true because he grew up in Memphis with African Americans...and he took it out to the world, but the world embraced it eventually.

And this "you never lived in a country at war" stuff is nonsense. Not saying that VietCowboys is wrong...

I was in Vietnam in 1968 and when we came back to base camp for a few days in Da Nang we could get damn near anything we wanted to get from the black market! Hell, one night some friends and I went to the motor pool, stole an ambulance and went out and bought a crappy $20.00 guitar and a Johnny Cash album...and some weed!

Saying that, it's possible that someone never heard of Elvis...but I really doubt that.

I've been to Da Nang. I do research in Da Nang. It is a coastal city and quite large. THere are many provinces in Vietnam that are isolated, particularly of the Hmong people who live in the mountains have have their own language and culture. Furthermore, Da Nang is in the South, it is south of Hue.

And, just because something is available doesn't means you'll seek it out or find out about it.

Well, it was North to me considering the DMZ...

And, outside of all the war torn country, Da Nang was a beautiful place...

:hammer::hammer::hammer:

And the same principle can be applied to many countries around the world.

anything south of Hue is not considered "north". Each region (north, central, and south), have their own cultural thing (similar to East Coast vs. West Coast vs. the South).

I'm sure many northerners knew of Elvis, but I can see where many did not. Their daily lives do not revolve around talking about anything beyond what the next meal is and where it is coming from. if he was a soccer player though....

Soccer sucks!

Hey? Did the North know about the Dallas Cowboys?
