No it doesn't. By that rationale, "Titanic" is the world best movie. Hogwash.

I know you young'uns want to say MJ is the more iconic figure, but its simply not true.

I was in Memphis once about 15 years ago. It was a bitterly cold day, and it wasn't an anniversary of his death or birth, just an regular old wednesday. I decided to go to Graceland and check it out. I got there at like 8am, and there was a line out the front door, all the way down the driveway, halfway to the friggen gate. You would have thought they were giving away free cars in there or something. People from all around the world coming to pay homage to the King of Rock and Roll.

Elvis was ENORMOUS. Worldwide fame same as MJ. But he did it in the 50's-70's. Back before MTV, hell, back before Cable TV.

MJ changed music, I'll give him that, but without Elvis, there wouldn't be the beatles, the Stones, hell I could go on and on, and one.

Elvis WAS rock n roll. He started it all. His memory will never die. I've said before, I believe MJ was more talented, but he will never reach iconic status the way Elvis did. If you think otherwise, its fairly evident you're younger than 35 or so.

True.

However, since his passing, many artists have come out and stated that they were heavily influenced by Michael Jackson.

Also, it is a well known fact that MTV was not even playing any Black music before Mike. Mike was so talented that they had to yield.

The guy broke down some serious barriers.

there is not a corner of the earth that doesnt know who Michael Jackson is. There hasnt been a bigger entertainer than Michael Jackson. People living in East Germany during the cold war even knew of Michael Jackson. He was "western music" to them. Western music is one reason why the cold war ended and the Berlin Wall fell.

anyway, it doesnt have to be either/or. Both Elvis and Michael Jackson were all time iconic entertainers. Elvis was BEFORE Jackson, so he was probably more influential....but both of them are on the "Mount Rushmore" of entertainers. I think Elvis, the Beatles, and Michael Jackson are the only 3 on that Mount Rushmore.

I have very serious doubts when someone claims to not know who Elvis is.

I can't name any of his songs but I definately know who the man is.

I can name 20 songs of Elvis to one of Michael Jackson. If the Dallas Cowboys are the only team that can be named Americas Team, then there is only one King of Rock and Roll and that is Elvis. Heck, even Donnie Osmond could claim to be as popular as MIchael Jackson.

Neither of you lived in a foreign country in the middle of a war. I think your perception is skewed by having lived in America all your lives.

And again, even I got what Viet was saying. Her dad didn't know of him until they came to America. What's hard to understand about that?

MJ was deemed the King of Pop...not Rock and Roll.

Like Zrin said and this thread is proof of it. Those under 40=MJ. Those over 40=Elvis.

I tend to think that MJ picked up the baton and ran with it. He was absolutely the next in line as far as popularity and iconic status.

I....

I think only those over 40 should be allowed to vote. They were the only ones that heard both performers in their prime.....

Did I say I was talking about VietCowboy?

I'm strictly speaking of people in the United States, I should have clarified that.

I'm the exception, I'm 38 and I go with Elvis. I will agree that MJ was the closest solo artist. (Beatles otherwise)

Lol.. I grew up watching old Elvis movies and I'm under 40. Does that count?

Well, part of the discussion that Hos was agreeing with was based on his discussion with Viet.

Forgive me for assuming you'd read that part and was disagreeing with what she was saying.

You're close enough to 40, so you count...

Elvis' movies can not be considered in the equation. Even Elvis knew his acting was horrible. If acting is the basis, I give it to MJ by default and I never saw Michal Jackson act.

Yep, and I can name 20 songs of Michael Jackson to one song for Elvis. Doesn't mean Michael > Elvis, just means I am more familiar with Mike.

So now Donnie Osmond > Mike? Right.....

I never lived in Germany. I have heard of Ludwig Van Beethoven. I am not really a classical music fan.

I still consider him an iconic figure in music.

I think it is goofy to ignore accomplishments simply because it was not "your generation."

You already said in an earlier post you don't know any of Elvis's songs. Your vote is not valid....:)

Wrong. Quite frankely, I think it "strengthens" my argument.

I can name quite a bit of songs done by artists back in the day.

The Beatles, Johnny Cash (The original man in black), John Lennon (solo) etc etc.

I knew who Elvis Pressely was but I never listened to his songs.

To clarify, this was the post I was commenting on when I said "I have serious doubts about someone claiming not to know who Elvis was".

No one's ignoring the man's accomplishments, Hos. Just that it's not out of the realm of possibilities that a person from another country may not have heard of Elvis.

I can't claim to know any Beethoven off the top of my head. If it weren't for my music classes in elementary school and his name being part of pop culture, even if his music isn't, then I wouldn't have heard of him. I don't listen to classical music either.
