MJ vs Elvis Who will be remember as the biggest icon?

I agree with all of this. But as a song writer he's obviously one of the best ever.

One exception: I did enjoy him in the Traveling Wilburys. He's less offputting in an ensemble.

Hos, I think you may be going a little overboard :) .

If VietCowboy says her dad doesn't know who Elvis is, even though you may be skeptical, I think you have to take her at her word.

I've never listened to a Dylan song in its entirety. I just can't get past that ridiculous voice. It's a stretch to even call it singing. Nor am I a fan of introspective folk music.

you don't say?

No one's ignoring the man's accomplishments, Hos.
I decided to go back and see if this was true. It isn't.

One guy even claims to have never heard of an Elvis song even though he knows who he is. Not even Hound Dog? Man, that is serious isolation from the world we are talking about.

MJ had worldwide appeal. Elvis really didn't if at all. MJ and it's not even close.
1 billion people saw the Aloha concert live and all fo them were in America I guess even though the population of America still isn't at 1 billion people. The other half a million people who saw the concert on tape delay also lived in America I suppose. I suddenly feel very crowded.

Outside of the American WASP, definitely MJ and its not even close.
This is actually comical it is so wrong. WASP means White Anglo Saxon Protestant. It basically means "White America." he was popular with "White America?" Really?

White America felt threatened by Elvis and the whole rock n roll revolution. At one point Elvis eclipsed the McCarthy investigations as the number one news story in the US. McCarthy was hunting Communists folks. Elvis became a bigger threat than the Commies.

Even Frank Sinatra (himself an icon) admitted he detested Elvis, and later to try and save his TV Show he had Elvis appear on his show.

The undisputed King of TV Shows was Ed Sullivan. He was afraid of Elvis, but after Milton Berle had Elvis on his show twice Sullivan felt incredible pressure to have Elvis on too. So in order to not shock "White America" Elvis' entire performance was shot from the waist up even though he sang a ballad. The point is, Elvis was considered "too Black" and therefore a threat.

Yep, they've never heard of him.

Can I ask you a question about Beethoven?

I repeat one more time for those upset with me for my stance here. I probably like Michael Jackson a little more than Elvis. Neither are my cup of tea. My responses here have nothing to do with my personal tastes. I am just being honest. Sometimes when I am honest it upsets people. Just the nature of who I am.

I did. Just like I take you at yours that you have never heard the song Hound Dog and never knew Elvis sang it.

That's not overboard though.

:wink2:

My 75 year old mother didn't know who Michael Jackson was when I asked her and my dad if they heard he died. My dad knew who he was.

Again, I said I can't name a song that Elvis sung.

Similar to Bob Dylan. I know the guy is famous and I would know his voice if I heard a song of his, but I couldn't name any of his songs.

If I heard any of Elvis' song, I would know that it is Elvis, but I couldn't name any of his song.

Being able to recognize Elvis' voice and being able to name the song is two different things.

Not everybody in America is a fan of Elvis' music. Just like not everybody in America is a fan of Michael Jackson.

you seriously never heard of Jailhouse Rock?

I wouldn't call myself a fan of Elvis' music, but damn, I knew that song when I was a kid

If it came on the radio, I would know it was Elvis singing it, but I wouldn't know the name of the song.

Elvis was never played in my house.

Speaking of idols, William Hung is somehow getting uglier.

And I am telling you I find that very hard to believe. To me, this is you going overboard trying to make your point that Jackson is bigger and it is a ridiculous tack.

LOL that is impossible
You didn't know this until this thread, but Elvis is virtually unheard of worldwide.

No serious. It is the new cultural phenomenon.

I grew up listening to K104, 106.1 and 100.3 in Dallas. They don't play Elvis on those stations, never have and never will. I don't have any friends or relatives that are into Elvis Pressley.

Aside from knowing what the guy looks like, what his voice sounds like, I know very little about the guy.

You can continue to call me a liar but I don't know any of Elvis' song "names" nor do I know any of the "names" of the movies he was in.

Obviously Elvis is the center of alot of peoples' your universe, don't call me a liar just because he wasn't the center of mine.

so you didn't know he was from Memphis? that he lived in Graceland?

I thought Elvis was common knowledge, guess not

I'm not calling you a liar Mike. I just think you are exaggerating your point. I find it remarkable that you've never seen a TV show with a mention of Elvis. I promise you he has been mentioned on TV thousands of times.

You have never seen a movie with a mention of him? Utterly remarkable since many movies mention him just like TV shows have. Someone here mentioned Forrest Gump earlier. You have never seen Firrest Gump? Amazing coincidence.

You've never heard a song that mentioned him? I can name at least 4 off the top of my head, and like you I am not an Elvis fan really.

You've never seen a work of "art" about him? Go to Mexico. Black velvet Elvis paintings were the rage for years.

You've never read anything about him in a news story or an Internet article before this thread? Perhaps the most amazing claim of all.

I get the whole you like Michael Jackson better and think he is bigger. I can agree to disagree with you on that even if I think it is humorous that anyone thinks Michael is a bigger icon.

Yeah, I think you're exaggerating, but not lying. I have more respect for you than you give me credit for.
