You know what? I think you are right!

(stupid cowboy fans)

If I never hear another thing about either one of them I will be happy. I don't care for either of them, talented or not, but Elvis is tops, they even gave MJ a copied title from Elvis.

No one's ignoring the man's accomplishments, Hos. Just that it's not out of the realm of possibilities that a person from another country may not have heard of Elvis.

I can't claim to know any Beethoven off the top of my head. If it weren't for my music classes in elementary school and his name being part of pop culture, even if his music isn't, then I wouldn't have heard of him. I don't listen to classical music either.
Bingo.

Elvis is every bit of that description too.

Is it damn near impossible that her Dad never heard of him? No, but it is close enough to damn near impossible to see it. Same as Beethoven. He never heard of him either? I doubt it.

There are certain "world figures" that I just find it hard to believe people have not at least heard of. That includes Michael Jackson by the way. The difference is, no one is in here flapping their gums about never having heard of him so he must not be that famous. By some strange twist of fate, that is exactly what people are saying about Elvis though.

Hence my skepticism. Seems too incredible to even even be considered. Just like Beethoven, for the exact reason you just said.

"No one is ignoring" Elvis' accomplishments? Really? I need to re-read the thread. That is exactly the point several are making. That no one has ever heard of him.

On the flip side of this, Forrest Gump did not discover the Jacksons, so they can't be all that big, since he discovered everyone else.

Dylan wasn't "pop" enough as the others to get the recognition.

Dylan was not the best singer...he is a total lyricist...a story teller. An icon...

pop our not, Dylan's impact was huge, famous singers of the '70s were singing his songs, not to speak of the musical artists he influenced

Oh, yeah, of course. But Beatles, Elvis, MJ were all pop and thus were massively popular. Dylan wasn't pop.

Of all four of them, Dylan is the only one whose music was timeless. You can listen to his music and think this exact song could come out today and be popular.

I wouldn't exactly put the Beatles in one genre of music

btw, I was responding to someone talking about the most influential artists of all time

I can accept the argument that some world figures are very well known around the world. But to say that it is near to impossible there is not a person in this world that hasn't heard of Elvis, or MJ or Beethoven is to underestimate how big the world is. There are currently over 6 billion people in the world, some of whom living in remote and isolated areas and don't care or less who the king of rock and roll or pop music or classical music is.

It might be hard to imagine for us sitting over here and being bombarded by 24/7 media outlets but other people live in very different realities, whether by choice or not.

I'm willing to bet that at least some of the individuals in the pictures below have no idea who any of these people we're talking about are.

Yeah, this guy's probably more of a Prince fan than MJ.

I've never listened to a Dylan song in its entirety. I just can't get past that ridiculous voice. It's a stretch to even call it singing. Nor am I a fan of introspective folk music.

I agree with all of this. But as a song writer he's obviously one of the best ever.

Seeing him live is even worse.
