Austin & Rock while entertaining aren't in my top 10. I prefer good in-ring wrestling which is why i'd take Michaels & Jericho over Austin & Rock.
That's my opinion, and it's certainly not a popular one.
I have absolutely zero issue over that. I'd take HBK and Jericho over pretty much everyone too. They're amazing on the mic and in the ring, IMO. So I'm not sure what you're hoping to prove there.
In an ideal world you'd like your main eventers to be both great on the mic and great in the ring. Unfortunately that's just not always the case. So when you have to pick between the two, of whats going to draw and sell more, the guy whose fantastic on the mic is 99/100 times going to be the pick, and the bigger draw, over someone who can't talk worth a crap but can put on a wrestling clinic.
A prime example would be your boy AJ. Absolutely fantastic, phenomenal, amazing in ring worker. The guy is brilliant in the ring and is popular because of that. However he's no where near, and never will be, as popular as Austin, The Rock, Ric Flair, or any guy like that was cause he can't talk on the mic worth a piss.
If it was just about wrestling ability, in the ring, getting folks over then a guy like Lance Storm would have been a multiple time world champion and would have been a huge draw.
Like it or not top quality mic skills are what sells. You think Hogan is one of the all time biggest draws, and names, in wrestling history cause he can wrestle? Hell no. The guy is awful in the ring and has been pretty much his whole career. But he can talk. That's what draws people to the shows. That's what puts up the ratings and sells the PPV buy rates that are crazy.
Now in the case of Austin it's actually really unfair that he doesn't get more credit and it's another by product of young folks, like yourself, having no idea bout him outside of his Stone Cold run.
Got back and watch some WCW footage of him as 'Stunning' Steve Austin, especially his work in the Hollywood Blonds with Brian Pillman. Steve could actually wrestle pretty darn good. He was a darn solid wrestler.
The thing was he didn't need it. It wasn't needed for him to get over. What got him over was being brilliant on the mic, drinking beer, kicking ***, and flipping the bird. But he could actually go in the ring if they'd let him.
