Mort: Cowboys expect to trade Romo to Texans or Broncos ***MERGE***

I definitely agree with that. That's been pretty obvious ever since it came out that we would be letting go of him. Why they wouldn't just cough up a pick to lock him up makes no sense. Of course Tony Romo has trade value in free agency. He's worth more than a 4th or 5th, too.

The right price for Tony is a 2nd. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. And I don't get why the media has suggested all along there's unlikely to be a market for him. It makes no sense.

Because the Cowboys have been mum while the Broncos and Texans have been telling anyone who will listen that they have no interest.

Thing is that the Cowboys paid attention when they were told the story about the boy who cried wolf. That is why they were taken at face value when they floated the release while people are now finally starting to pick up on the Broncos and Texans disingenuousness.

Getting the Texans to play their hand early was a masterstroke.

Because the Cowboys let the world know there was a limited market. If you wanted to maximize his value, you let the trade partners believe the have nots are in play too

Maybe because he's 37 and keeps getting major injuries?
If that's how you feel and that's the case you're likely just not interested. And you'd have made that clear. And Jerry and Co would have released Romo by now.

There is smoke and likely fire is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Where Dallas screwed the pooch was the touchy/feely " Do Right By Romo" crap the press got a hold of. If Houston and Denver thought Cleveland, Chicago, NY, and SF were in play they would be more willing to trade

It's obvious to league insiders that Cle, NY and SF will never be in play. It makes flat zero sense for any of those teams to seek out Romo. Chicago theoretically, perhaps.

Houston has to budge here. They dont make a trade, Romo will sign with Denver if released. And Houston just wasted a 2018 second to get rid of a contract they didnt have to without Romo.

Todays winner =Cleveland. Pretty much no matter how this plays out

I was listening to 105.5 and they had Texans beat writer John Mcclain (who is a real jack wagon) on. He was trying to explain how the Texans didnt need Romo and either way Brock was going to be released and they will draft a qb in the first two rounds. It sounded as if he was coached by the team to say it.

They are built to win now but think Tom Savage could lead them to a Superbowl. Yeah right, Ill buy that lol.

I'm just saying that those have been obvious considerations and factor heavily into any hypothetical trade value.

If Tony hits free agency...a team can bring him in, get him looked out by doctors, and have him do some field testing. A team can at least get a more in-depth evaluation.

The Cowboys very well could value the June 1st cap space over a 5th or 6th Rd pick. I'm sure it's not just the Cowboys playing games over a late pick. They more than likely have a price where the space is more valuable than the pick and they won't settle for less.

I don't think this deal would be held up over a pick less than a first rounder. I think tHat means the Cowboys are requesting at least a first in trade. The price could be, and should be, more than that.

I would piggy back on the Osweiler trade with Cleveland. Give them a 2018 2nd rounder (which they gave up) for Joe Thomas. Cleveland was asking for a 2nd in the waning days of 2016 trade deadline. If Cowboys are in win now mode, why not? Send Free to Denver (join Leary) or Minny for a 6th or 7th.

Would also trade Morris for a 2017 5th. And I would take a 3rd and 6th for Romo right now, IF either Houston or Denver are willing to switch their 1 and 2 with us.

That's a point I was making last night. But has the opportunity to do a June 1 designation ended? Does it end at midnight?

The deadline is before the season starts. I'm just saying they may value the ability to do that more than a late Rd pick. Instead of bartering for a 5th, they may rather just cut him for the space even though there's no deadline.

Cleveland is not a winner. They just spent 16 million for a 2nd round pick. They have worse luck then the Cowboys at 2nd round picks.

He's had a couple broken collarbones. They take a long time to heal, but they can happen to anybody. He had a cyst removed, and a compression fracture in his back.
If he weren't 37, we wouldn't be talking about a 2nd round pick. We'd be talking about a ransom of picks.

If you're a contender minus a QB, Tony Romo is still the single best option out there for actually contending. He's actually the only option out there this offseason.

I would have been happy with a 3rd.then it came out about the release and I was bitter with how they neutered his value last year. Now it seems obvious to me that they should be able to get something of real value. At this point I don't see how a first round pick swap and a 2nd doesn't make sense for Houston/Denver and us.

I'm just apprehensive and want to see it done.

I'm apprehensive, too. Because you just know Jerry can wink and pull the ********* routine on us at any point. But on paper, it sure looks like we should get something for Tony.

I think they are letting the two teams that we know of and any others that have not been negotiating through the press to bid against each other and drive the price up.

Houston is in quite the pickle if they don't get Romo.

They will let that play out for awhile but I also don't think they are going to leave Romo hanging forever either. It will be resolved before the weekend is over is my guess. I have no idea what we will get.

He's had chronic back issues for years now...even when he got the extension it was a concern. On talent alone, sure he's the best option for contending teams and for those looking at a short-term solution.

They are not likely haggling over a late round pick. Do you think if either Denver or Houston want Romo they are arguing over the difference between a 5th and a 6th or even a 4th? No. The deal would be done already.

I have been saying for some time that Romo should be worth significant draft compensation and the Jerry would be an idiot to let Romo walk. All Jerry has to do is wait this out long enough.

Could this have played out how Dallas wanted?

Leaked that Romo is getting released and Denver already has contract figures in place and will likely sign there.
Catches Houston off guard, figures he wanted to stay close to home

Dallas then changes mind and now wants a trade - heres your chance Houston

Houston clears the trash off the books, which just happens to be a QB by trading a 2nd rounder for cap space

Now pit Denver vs Houston

I would not be surprised if the compensation involves multiple picks and one of them is conditional. I would really be shocked if they are posturing over anything less than a second. We are likely holding out for a first or more.
