Mosley claims we love James Casey

Why would it not surprise me for Dallas to take another tight end in the second round?

I do like the idea of getting a versatile fullback, but I don't see Casey as a big-time lead blocker just another H-back type. Let's not worry about the Wildcat and get someone who can contribute at one position on a regular basis.
They aren't talking about the second round. Timmy mentions the third, he might still be there in the fourth.

He used to play baseball Jerry might pull the trigger in the 2nd, just in case.

...where he won't actually get on the field.

We don't use fullbacks and he won't get past Bennett.

Mosley:

Anyway, keep your eye on Casey in the second or third round.

MacMahon:

If the Cowboys want Casey, they'll probably have to grab him with one of their first two picks. He isn't expected to last past the third round.

Maybe we're looking at him in the third, but the second round is also included by both writers.

And since he's a tight end, we're compelled to take him in the second round ... and trade Martellus Bennett and Bobby Carpenter to Miami for a commemorative schedule.

Seriously, we're looking at him as a fullback. Mosley was talking about this on GAC today. (I put a thread in the draft zone.)

Could James Casey be Cowboys' Wildcat QB?

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

The Cowboys will send a scouting contingent to Houston tomorrow for a private workout with Rice TE James Casey, ESPN.com's Matt Mosley reports.

Casey, a 24-year-old Azle product, might be the most versatile player in the draft. He was a high school quarterback who spent four seasons pitching in the White Sox's system before going to Rice, where he played several positions but was primarily used as a tight end/H-back/slot receiver last season.

Casey (6-4, 246) has experience running Rice's variation of the Wildcat and could also contribute immediately on special teams. NFL Draft Scout compares him to a combination of New England WR Wes Welker and Indianapolis TE Dallas Clark.

If the Cowboys want Casey, they'll probably have to grab him with one of their first two picks. He isn't expected to last past the third round.

Wildcat QB? That's exactly what this offense needs!!!!

If he is a good blocker I see us getting him. His versatility combined with special teams play allow him to be great for the practice squad. I don't think he is as high priority as the reporters think. We do need a 3rd TE cause Curtis wasn't retained.

I never talked about him as a FB, I still believe he would be a great receiver in the slot

Then it must have been me and someone else, maybe even on another board. But I could have sworn it was this board, I know I took a heckuva lot of flack for even suggesting Casey as a FB. :D

Lab, you do agree that generally you either go with a 2nd TE or a fullback in a conventional formation, yeah?

What do you think about keeping Bennett off the field to put on someone like Casey as a FB?

Oh, I love Bennett, probably more than most. So I want him on the field.

And I really don't have a strong opinion on Casey, because I've never seen him play. I know a lot of people whose opinion I respect love him as a player, but he might be a luxury we can't afford.

But he might not get picked as high as some think, either. He is still very much an overaged tweener. And while he is the versatile FB Parcells likes, I remember Parcells having big time reservations about Newman being older.

And honestly, I think Mosley just mentioned Miami because he still talks to Sparano and I'm sure Ireland... They're old Baylor friends.

If Tom 'Ski says he's a good player and we get him at #69 I have no issues. We need good "football" players. After last year's draft I don't know if I would take Ireland over 'Ski.

Blocking - he can't be worse than Anderson

I'd love for us to have another good draft and put the panic of last year when Parcells "robbed" us of all our personnel people to bed for good.

no comment..........

file Casey right behind Pat White

Personally, I think he falls to end of the 3rd, perhaps even into the 4th. There are a ton of TEs with his skillset plus more size & speed. Its his intangibles that seperate him from the rest IMO.

But I agree about not overreaching. A month ago, Casey was a 2nd rounder and a top 3 or 4 TE, now he is a 3rd round projection and top 7 TE. Draft is going to be fluid, so Jerry is going to have to move around to get his pet cats.

Casey would definitely be more Romo friendly than Anderson. A Casey like upgrade at FB plus a C/OG who Romo can rely on are the 2 most immediate impact positions in this draft. A close third will be upgrading the slot/returner position.

For the first time we actually speak the same language on Casey. I would be happier the hell if Dallas found a way to get a mid 3rd before Miami was on the clock and take this guy. I have no problem spending a 3rd on this guy, I would applaud it. I just don't want it to be one of our top 2 picks if that makes any sense.

Then, again, I see no indication that he is a capable blocker out of the backfield. I want a versatile fullback, but I want him to actually be a fullback, not someone who lines up at the position but is really just a tght end.

Apparently, Casey can carry the ball ... so that's a plus at least.

Fullback?

Reports I've read say that blocking is the weakest part of his game and that he has virtually no experience blocking out of the 3-point stance.

And here's a quote which should scare a lot of people off:

"Casey will be characterized as a Matt Jones-like tweener. But also like Jones, his unique upside could make him a stunningly high draft selection come April."

Nothing against Casey, but I have no interest in using this team's second or third rounder on another TE prospect.

You want a fullback? Draft this year's best in the 4th round!

Don't worry HoL, I won't say I told you so, not until we actually drafted him. :D

Seriously, I understand that many disregard the FB position, especially how it has been used (or underused) currently. But intead of thinking of it as FB, think of it as another weapon for Romo. Another safety valve who is also a playmaker. Another guy as reliable as Witten, on the field at the same time would make the Cowboys crazy consistent AND UNPREDICTABLE on third and short/medium.

But trading down in the 3rd would be best value, and I am all about value in the draft.

It's the only thing I would consider acceptable and the only way I would gladly eat crow.

No need to eat crow big guy. We are all Cowboys fans here, so when it is all said and done we all want what is best for the team. Just having some fun w/you, that's all.
