I don't really have a issue with the starting amount, but jeez, not now.

I'm not being dismissive, but why not now?

"Now" is the reason you can possibly get away with a lower offer with a decent guarantee because a player on some level knows he is one play away from retirement any day and will be far more negotiable than he would be if he finished the year healthy and perhaps leading the league in rushing

Anyone reminded of the low contract offered to Emmitt at the beginning of the 1993 season?

So what if they just guaranteed the whole thing? Is it still low ball?

I posted the same question on page 1.

I think it's a good deal for the Cowboys but average for Murray. If I were Murray I would take the 16 million guaranteed for 4 years PLUS built in incentive so I can make an extra or 2 million per year based on productivity and games played. That would be fair to both sides. He would also be smart to stay behind this OL.

Let's not get carried away with the comparison.

Emmitt doesn't miss games. He plays through a separated shoulder.

Wasn't the offer made before the season and Smith sat out the first two games?

Yes, but my simpler comparison was - a very cheap contract offered to one of the best RBs in the league - Emmitt then, DeMarco now.

I was too young to remember this but what I've heard is that Jerry underestimated how important a good running back was? That anyone could run behind that line and be successful?

Losing the first two sure changed his mind.

This isn't silly at all. It shows Jerry is (hopefully) getting smarter.

Murray is probably worth a 3-4 year contract tops, and maybe 5-6 million a year tops. They're not going to lead with their final best offer, so it makes sense.

Also, if Murray gets hurt (a real possibility) then he won't command nearly as much on the open market. All but the most reckless of GMs would avoid him with his injury history if he gets hurt again.

No one is comparing Emmitt Smith to Murray.

This is a discussion on whether he should be paid or not and if so how much.

That 4th year is a gimmee to Murray because he won't be productive then.

I don't understand this, you have a guy who's carrying the bacon and you low ball him in the middle of the season...go figure.

They should have offered more and put certain clauses in there like they did with Sean Lee.
