Yes, but my simpler comparison was - a very cheap contract offered to one of the best RBs in the league - Emmitt then, DeMarco now.
Super Bowl winning running back Emmitt Smith then, having a career year DeMarco Murray now. There are a few differrences between the two and what their respective resumes demand/demanded.
I was too young to remember this but what I've heard is that Jerry underestimated how important a good running back was? That anyone could run behind that line and be successful?

Losing the first two sure changed his mind.
True. Perhaps that is why Jerry Jones made an in-season offer to DeMarco Murray. He is paying for either a contract here or a contract elsewhere. I doubt you will see Murray whiff the rest of the season simply because of an initial low offer.

Also, if Murray gets hurt (a real possibility) then he won't command nearly as much on the open market. All but the most reckless of GMs would avoid him with his injury history if he gets hurt again.

Of course not.

And the smarter GM's will think, "Gosh will he (Murray) look that good behind our offensive line (think Miami, Tampa, Raiders)?"

I posted the same question on page 1.

I think it's a good deal for the Cowboys but average for Murray. If I were Murray I would take the 16 million guaranteed for 4 years PLUS built in incentive so I can make an extra or 2 million per year based on productivity and games played. That would be fair to both sides. He would also be smart to stay behind this OL.

Excellent idea.

Just franchise him . renting him out is a good option

that would be cruel imo. murray has been a good soldier for this team. be good to the person and let him hit FA before he hits 30.

This is good to hear. I'm glad they aren't overpaying.

I'm not a fan of investing money in RBs but 4 years $16 million is tolerable.

There is nothing wrong with the offer. If he does not want it, then we will just find a RB in the draft.

Whatever you want it to or don't want it to. I'm merely saying an NFL contract is hardly the way to prosperity, it's just a good head start.

staubach was captain america and got in early on real estate when dallas was booming. apples and oranges.

I hope this is not true. That offer is downright embarrassing.

The offer is perfectly fair considering his injury history. If the durability of a player is in question than they shouldn't be expecting a ridiculous offer.

I like the one on our PS a little too. I wonder what kind of results he could be having with his speed and this OL.

Kevin Spacey would have shot Samuel L. Jackson at the start of The Negotiator in the time contract haggling would happen as quickly as some people want.

Fair enough, but saying that it's 16 times what someone made in the 70's isn't really relevant today unless you start throwing out inflation rates and stuff. Anyway, I agree with the rest of your post

Here is the bottom line....you can't work the man like a mule...then NOT pay him. If so many other RBs can run behind this OL....then how come there are other RBs on this team collecting a paycheck that are NOT earning a dime of their money? Heck Escobar probably makes more than Murray! I do not want to overypay....but your gameplan indicates he is the most important player on this team....so you should pay him accordingly. Personally I think they work him too much. And that could be why Jerry suggested last week that they need to work Murray a little less...because they are not interested in a 7m/year RB. I think he is better suited having his carries reduced to around 20 a game...and having those 20 carries be as explosive in December as they are in October. So Garrett and the front office need to get on the same page regarding his worth.

Significantly less than expected.

Murray will balk at this. We'll see what happens in free agency, or perhaps the Cowboys have explained that they will franchise him at the end of the year, and could potentially franchise him again in 2016.

He'll be 29 before he sees free agency. And at that point his ability to command what he could have gotten now, will be diminished.

That being said, I don't think 16 million is the middle ground on that.
