Murray the Fumbler; What would Jimmy do?

Exactly, cutting crappy kickers and bottom roster guys for falling asleep in meetings isn't all that 'edgy' Leon Lett single handedly lost that Thanksgiving game and wasn't cut even though a lot of people thought he was the next day.

As far as benching Murray, I probably would have sat him the rest of the first half on that second fumble. I know not that big of a deal, maybe would have at least sent a message.

That second fumble was on Weeden. He didn't place the ball to Murray correctly.

Agree with you for the most part but he doesn't get a pass on it.

You have to know when you're simply not going to get anymore.

He didn't need to force the issue. It was going to be first down deep in the Commanders territory.

Go down and live to fight another play.

I wish he did that. Now. Lol

Agreed. Anybody that thinks Jimmy would have benched him by now does not know what they are talking about.

The fumble against the Commanders was a tremendous effort by Murray, he just had to know that he's not going to get any extra yards against that many tacklers and could only fumble it. Murray is the least of this team's problems.

YR

This is exactly right. Also, his backup coughed up the ball, too.

They've done a better job securing the ball in traffic. He needs to learn/remember to get down when he's been held up by more than one defender. Murray's comments after the game notwithstanding.

I would MUCH rather him be steady. Maybe get 1400 yards...and protect the football. I am going from thread to thread warning everyone that the egoes in Dallas are starting come out. And we still have half a season to go. There is a race for people to receive the most credit for the Cowboys resurgance. And that kind of culture starts at the TOP. Jerry donning headsets during the middle of a ACTUAL LIVE NFL GAME! Romo inserting himself back into a game. Murray handing out gifts with 10 games left in a season. Murray fighting for an extra INCH..and losing the ball! The OL eating the cheese. And Tyron Smith has not been as dominant as some would be led to believe. He is no doubt great...and will get better. But he is not the Great Wall of China. And this OL has been top 5...but it has had some bad moments. Garrett needs to settle this team down(not sure what he can do about the owner). Make sure they understand that their is half a season to go. With a brutal stretch of road games in December. THEN...THEN...if we make the playoffs. There will be ANOTHER season. So put the annointing oil away...and stay focused on the task at hand. We have won NOTHING to this point. I am not interested in DeMarco Murray breaking Eric Dickersons record. Especially if it means 5 - 6 more fumbles this year...and him having legs of Jello by week 17. This team needs to pump the brakes. I live in DC. That was NOT a good team we lost to last night. Especially going against a 3rd string QB!

Quoted for truth

I don't give him a pass because his effort allowed the fumble to happen. Understanding when to give up on a play has to be a part of every carry for Murray. We've seen it before and now we see it again. Multiple defensive players are tackling him but he refuses to give up thinking one more extra yard is going to make a difference. It won't and leads to fumbles. There was no way Murray was going to score and it's on him to realize and understand that means he needs to go down and live for another play.

Yup. Coolest part was post game when he said "I won't change my running style" regarding fighting for an extra yard with 5 defenders on you.

Solid. Can't wait for more.

Sorry can't agree with you WG
That fumble was a very important factor in us losing last night. Murray clearly does not understand how important it is and JG has not been able to deliver this message

To be clear, I totally agree that that fumble was a major reason why the team lost. I totally agree that the message has to continue to be emphasized. BUT, the calls for benching and whatnot is not going to happen. He is the team's bell cow.

Not that it matters what the great Jimmy would do, but there's a misconception he would cut Murray or sit him on the pine for a few games.

Jimmy has often said he would treat each player differently, not the same.

Curvin Richards fumbles on the last day of the regular season in a meaningless game against the Bears, and he didnt make it to the following afternoon. Leon Lett with a massive blunder on Thanksgiving against the Fins, well Lett had enormous potential, so he stayed. Caused a big fumble that James Washington returned for a td in the Super Bowl that year too.

I think Jimmy said, "Hey, John Roper fell asleep in a ST meeting one time, so I cut him. If Troy Aikman falls asleep in a meeting, I'd nudge him and say, Troy, wake up."

In the vein of what would Jesus/Jimmy do -

There is no question that Murray can run the ball but his fumbles are going to kill us in a playoff game someday - if we get that far. Would Jimmy have tolerated these fumbles from Emmitt ? What would Jimmy have done ?

That good question. I believe Jimmy would live with it during season but would move on from him first thing after season ends. Murray tried to fumble the ball again late in that game but it went out of bounds.

A 2000 yard rusher who fumbles 10 times is worth no more than a 1000 yard rusher IMHO.

He has to clean that up.

I wanted to post something along those lines but you said it perfectly.

You can't take Murray out of the game the way he is running it, but for God's sake do something to address the fumbling. Make him carry the ball around all week or something. We get points there, we probably win.

You can't change him at this point. If you are this far along with playing football in your life and you have a fumbling issue, well that's who you are. Same as Favre. He was a gunslinger who threw a lot of ill advised interceptions. That's who he was. No changing that.

Murray's fumble yesterday had more to do with his running style. He's like Barber was in 2007. He runs to contact on seemingly every chance he gets. Yesterday was just pure recklessness. No reason to take on 4 or 5 defenders by yourself after you already gained almost 40yds. No sense in it at all.

Murray has talent but is not a smart player.

Nothing personal... but count me as one who doesn't care what Jimmy would do. I only care about what Jason will do and evidently that is nothing, because you don't bench the league leading RB.

Did Coughlin bench Tiki Barber when he was fumbling all the time? Nope. Re-trained his handling. That's all you can do when you have a beast running for you.

Sad but true.

Again, largely agree with you WG but a bell cow is supposed to be dependable, when you fumble at the rate Murray had been this year , that is not dependable. Our coached need to ENSURE that Murray gets that message by whatever means necessary. It is clear that what they have been doing so far is not working.
